Jewish Cultural Aspirations, Ruth Weisberg Dec 2012

Jewish Cultural Aspirations, Ruth Weisberg

The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review

In the late nineteenth century in Europe and to some extent in the United States, the Jewish upper middle class—particularly the more affluent families—began to enter the cultural spheres of public life, especially in major cities such as Vienna, Berlin, Paris, New York, and London. While many aspects of society were closed to them, theater, the visual arts, music, and art publication were far more inviting, especially if they involved challenging aspects of modernity that might be less attractive to Gentile society. Jews had far less to lose in embracing new forms of expression, and they were very attracted to …

Digital Curation And Information Management: Technological Changes In Art History, Joy K. Hyatt Dec 2012

Digital Curation And Information Management: Technological Changes In Art History, Joy K. Hyatt

Explorations – The Journal of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity at Wright State

Archival and curatorial practices including information management within the fields of art and art history are changing. As a contribution to these vital fields of study, this project addresses their practical application in this digital age. My ten-week research project, Digital Curation and Information Management: Technological Changes in Art History explored this concept. Taking place at Wright State University (WSU), this included a practical application of my art history and motion picture coursework. This included investigating the many phases of digital image curation (the act of curating) through information analysis and management. The assimilation of online and written literature, program …

Embedded Ecologies: Teaching Digital Theory In Art And Design, Su Ballard, C Mccaw

Su Ballard

We are both researchers in a traditional sense and also design and art practitioners. We work in an environment where our students make things as well as study theory. Our hypotheses surround our experiences, both as academic 'makers' and through our observations in the classroom. Our position is, that if practice and theory are integrated and embedded within art and design educational experience, meaning is brought to theory and thoughtful positioning to practice. There is a wide range of literature on the theory/practice relationship within art school environments. We draw on this material but in many ways diverge from it …

D>Art05 Distributed Art And Mobile Journeys, Su Ballard

Su Ballard

There is time for the work to be examined, experimented with, and opened up to a visiting public. This kind of exhibition model has for a long time been problematic for works that do not exist within a defined 3D space, or a comfortably measured duration. D>Art05 and Mobile Journeys address the temporal and spatial restrictions of the exhibition model by making the work available for download both during and post-exhibition. Visitors to the exhibition could bring their mobiles and download any of the fourteen works in Mobile Journeys, in effect, mobilising the work.

Deliberate Use Of Creative Problem Solving In Art Making, Rebecca Dame-Seidler

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This project explores the productivity of the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) tools in the visual art making process. The project offered the opportunity for high school student volunteer’s to participate in an after school program called Creative Art Group Experience (CAGE). Volunteers learned and made use of CPS tools to guide their art making. The project researched the effectiveness of using CPS tools in art making documenting volunteer progress and feedback. As an art educator, I had the opportunity to evaluate the impact of using CPS tools with the art-making process. The results of CAGE will benefit how CPS tools …

Silent Subversions, Derek Dubois Nov 2012

Silent Subversions, Derek Dubois

Derek M Dubois

Explores the concept of spectatorship in relation to gender in the earliest period of film history in the United States known as the silent era. Argues that a new mode of spectatorship emerges for women during the 1920s, which employs to advantage the extra-diegetic components of spectacle in theater design, new customized genres for female filmgoers, fandom, and exotic male film stars, such as Rudolph Valentino. Focuses primarily on feminist film theory and on cultural studies as methodological models.

“The Problem Of Science” In Nietzsche And Heidegger, Babette Babich Nov 2012

“The Problem Of Science” In Nietzsche And Heidegger, Babette Babich

Babette Babich

Nietzsche and Heidegger pose important philosophical questions to science and its technological projects. The resultant contributes to what may be called a continental philosophy of science and I argue that only such a rigorously critical approach to the question of science permits a genuinely philosophical reflection on science. The resultant contributes to what may be called a continental philosophy of science and I argue that only such a rigorously critical approach to the question of science permits a genuinely philosophical reflection on science. More than a thoughtful reflection on science, however, the heart of philosophy is also at stake in …

Dab Shunt Spoor, Jen Grabarczyk

CGU MFA Theses

My work functions as an act of bearing witness. In it, I process consciousness, memory, narrative and time through the choreographed integration of cerebral representations and bodily movement. Through forms both strange and elegant, I seek to activate a viewer’s memory and consciousness–psychologically and corporeally.

Instrumental Relations: Software As Art, Art As Software, Brogan S. Bunt Nov 2012

Instrumental Relations: Software As Art, Art As Software, Brogan S. Bunt

Brogan Bunt

Software art is characterised by a close concern with the culture of software and the medium of programming. This inevitably demands an engagement with the terrain of the instrumental; software is a sphere of tool-making and programming is governed by conceptions of functional (and generic) utility. Yet where does this leave art? If, in Kantian terms, art is defined by its uselessness (by its lack of any externally grounded necessity) and if, in classical critical theoretical terms, this alienation from function opens up a space of critique, then how can art explore and participate within the instrumental without abandoning its …

How To Produce Articulate Artists, Peter J. Barr Phd, Christine Reising Oct 2012

How To Produce Articulate Artists, Peter J. Barr Phd, Christine Reising

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

This twenty-minute Powerpoint presentation will describe the team-taught, year-long Foundations Core Concepts Program at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan. It has been in place since 2006 and has successfully integrated a course previously called "Language of Art" (taught by an art historian) with hands-on studio assignments previously taught in a stand-alone design course (taught by a studio professor). We have found that this hybrid approach is extremely effective in developing sensitive and articulate art majors who are prepared to integrate design concepts into all of their artworks and to analyze and describe eloquently both personal and historical works of …

Show Me The Semiosis: Grounding Post Structural Theory In Physiological Experience, Michael T. Arrigo Oct 2012

Show Me The Semiosis: Grounding Post Structural Theory In Physiological Experience, Michael T. Arrigo

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

Most of my art students experience a very down to earth epistemological relationship to the world. There is what there is. Middle America is a land of dualisms: matter and spirit, mind and body, good and evil. In this uncluttered black and white world, post-structural theory seemingly has little to offer but a range of unnecessary and unattractive grays. This presentation describes how I overcome my students’ resistance to intellectualizing perception and art making. I use a physiological perspective that grounds students’ investigation of art and meaning in an investigation of themselves, their bodies, their perceptual responses, emotional reactions and …

Can We Own Art? Or Just Be Its Legal Guardian?, Carla Poindexter Sep 2012

Can We Own Art? Or Just Be Its Legal Guardian?, Carla Poindexter

UCF Forum

How can we effectively teach students to be professional artists at a time when some of society’s economic values are so unrealistic? It is true the high-end art market is thriving, but the contemporary art community is arguing whether such outrageous public auctions and private sales are good or bad for art.

Persephone And Hades: A Study Of Representation In Art And Culture, Sara Buckley Aug 2012

Persephone And Hades: A Study Of Representation In Art And Culture, Sara Buckley

Student Scholarship

Ancient artworks which represent classical Greek myths most commonly depict the story's climax. Their subjects reveal that the ancient Greeks' taste for dramatic storytelling matched their reverence for each divine entity's embodiment, whether it was a natural phenomenon or an abstract concept. The former of these traits dominate the visual portrayals of the Pluto and Persephone myth, as can be seen in many artworks where the ancient Greeks chose to depict the moment where Pluto theatrically abducts Persephone and sweeps her away to the underworld. In fact, in visual art, it was characteristic of the Greeks to stress the exciting …

The Performance Of Art: Picasso, Léger, And Modern Dance, 1917-1925, Amanda Holly Beresford

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This thesis examines the phenomenon of easel painters designing for ballet companies in Paris in the 1910s and 1920s. It focuses on the work of Picasso for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and Léger for De Maré's Ballets Suédois between 1917 and 1925, and considers the consequences for these artists' studio practice of their involvement in dance theatre. Their work is situated in the historical context of Wagner’s influential notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk—total theatre synthesizing all the arts, including painting—and its reinterpretation by avant-garde theatre practitioners from the mid-nineteenth into the early twentieth century. Picasso’s and Léger’s stage designs reveal the dynamic …

Canvassing Generations: Art Through Postmemory, Julianne Norton Jul 2012

Canvassing Generations: Art Through Postmemory, Julianne Norton

Holster Scholar Projects

Investigated the legitimacy if postmemory, its relationship with art, and completed a creative project addressing the four generations of artists leading to the Norton family. What is postmemory? How does artwork allow for the conceptualization of memory? The research supported the existence of postmemory and led to an increased understanding, analyzing, and recreation of artwork from each of the previous four generations. This artwork served as a tangible form of my own postmemory.

Ralph Fasanella: Worker, Activist, Artist, Nick Salvatore Jun 2012

Ralph Fasanella: Worker, Activist, Artist, Nick Salvatore

Nick Salvatore

[Excerpt] In his art, as in his life, Ralph Fasanella reminds us all of the complexity of our society and of the need for each generation to dedicate itself anew to the commitment of justice for all. That his work, accomplished without the benefit of formal training, is as arresting and as pleasing as it is, is but a reflection of Ralph Fasanella's basic message.

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Being an artist involves the creation and maintenance of an artistic identity. Because there are no specific prerequisites for becoming an artist, like academic degrees or professional licenses, anyone can call him- or herself an artist. Working as an artist differs from working in more typical careers. This paper seeks to examine the ways artists build and maintain artistic identities, and the various actions or modes of thinking needed in order to do so. The author reflects on her own life as an artist, which includes considering how she lost sight of her artistic self, and the steps she is …
