Señoritas And Cigarmaking Women: Using ‘Latin’ Feminine Types To Rebrand And Market Ybor City, 1950-1962, Brad Massey, L. J. Russum
Señoritas And Cigarmaking Women: Using ‘Latin’ Feminine Types To Rebrand And Market Ybor City, 1950-1962, Brad Massey, L. J. Russum
Sunland Tribune
“Pretty señoritas” and “tractable” cigarmaking women were two Latin female types created by marketers to promote Ybor City—historically known for industrial cigar production, Latin immigrants, and labor strife—as both a major tourist destination and continuing cigar manufacturing center after World War II. This article—through an examination of promotional materials, news accounts, and other archival sources— describes how Anthony Pizzo, Tampa mayor Curtis Hixon, and other area businesspersons and politicians used señoritas and female cigar workers to rebrand and market postwar Ybor City as a distinct and exotic hybrid space, which combined industrial production with tourist- centered consumption.

Finding Relics In The Burgert Brothers Photographs, Bill Harris
Sunland Tribune
The Burgert Brothers Photographic Collection presents a pictorial record of the commercial, residential, and social growth of Tampa Bay and Florida's West coast from the mid-1800s to the mid-1960s. The photographs came from Burgert Brothers Inc., a commercial photography studio founded in 1917 after Al and Jean Burgert purchased William A. Fishbaugh’s commercial photography studio. The Burgert Brothers’ studio took approximately 80,000 photos during its operation up to the mid-1960s. After the Burgert Brothers Studio closed, the photographs and negatives were stored in a tin-roofed garage in South Tampa. Many negatives were destroyed by heat, humidity, and rain.

The Sunday After The Tuesday: The 2016 Presidential Election In The Pulpit, Matthew Boedy
Sermon Studies
The 2016 presidential election divided Christians along racial, economic, and theological lines. The central question of my study was how did ministers frame the election, if at all? Through analysis of transcripts of 47 sermons from across the country (14 states plus Washington D.C.), from multiple denominations and various sized congregations given on November 13 or thereabouts, I claim that the paradox of the dual citizenship of Christians was the predominant theme in these sermons. Second, only one minister directly endorsed a candidate and only a handful indirectly endorsed. Many preached a form of unity.

Theses and Dissertations
Better than Before is an experiential art installation that profiles the life of James Isreal, a Vietnam vet who shares a spiritual journey that is filled with self-discovery, introspection, and hope in the midst of war and abhorrent racism. His poignant retrospective follows his struggle to find peace in the midst of trauma and disease, providing life lessons that transcend the pangs of adversity and the unknown.

Civil War, Economic Governance & State Reconstruction In The Arab Middle East, Steven Heydemann
Civil War, Economic Governance & State Reconstruction In The Arab Middle East, Steven Heydemann
Middle East Studies: Faculty Publications
Civil wars currently underway in Libya, Syria, and Yemen demonstrate that patterns of economic governance during violent conflict exhibit significant continuity with prewar practices, raising important questions along three lines. First, violent conflict may disrupt prewar practices less than is often assumed. Second, continuity in governance highlights the limits of state fragility frameworks for postconflict reconstruction that view violent conflict as creating space for institutional reform. Third, continuity of prewar governance practices has important implications for the relationship between sovereignty, governance, and conflict resolution. Civil wars in the Middle East have not created conditions conducive to reconceptualizing sovereignty or decoupling …

Articles
Today, many visitors to the downtown Arkadelphia vicinity may not realize the historical significance of one of the buildings across the street from the Clark County Court House.
The structure known to some as the "Flanagin Law Office" was constructed prior to the Civil War and served as an office for a number of different attorneys, including Arkansas Governor Harris Flanagin of Arkadelphia. Flanagin became governor in 1862 and held the office during some of the most tumultuous year in American history.
