Discharge granted by Isaac Shelby, Governor of Kentucky, on 18 June 1814 of a recognizance given by Alexander Spotswood and Michael Denham for the appearance of James Thomas at the March 1813 term of the Barren Circuit Court. The discharge cites evidence of their “every exertion” to bring Thomas to court after his failure to appear.

The writer, who is probably her future husband Charles E. Beynroth, anticipates her visit to Louisville, Kentucky, where he intends to have her see two women: “Charlotte,” about to move to a new home, and “Caroline,” whose poor health has required her to postpone a planned trip. The letter is addressed to Henrietta in care of her father Edward Broughton.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3308. Specifications, including sketches, for the construction of a bridge across Skaggs Creek in Barren County, Kentucky. The detailed specifications as to design, dimensions, materials, and method of construction were prepared by a commission appointed by the Barren County Court. Unable to secure a bid to erect the bridge for the appropriated sum of $1,000, the commission recommended an additional appropriation in order to accept a bid of $1,200.

Letter to a Mr. Parker from Swan Burrus, State Line, Kentucky, referring to his children’s interest in an estate. He reminds Parker of his delivery of a bond as guardian for the three youngest children, and asks for further instructions. The letter is written on letterhead from the Office of Burrus Brothers, Drugs and General Merchandise, and bears an illustrated advertisement for Dr. Brown’s Family Remedies promising relief from a variety of complaints.

Smith, Louisville, Kentucky, in state and local politics and civic causes. Active in local Democratic councils, Mrs. Smith left the party in acrimony in 1927 over its selection of candidates for governor of Kentucky and mayor of Louisville, and worked thereafter in Republican campaign committees and delegations. Includes a petition demanding enforcement of American neutrality in World War II.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3300. Letter, 2 January 1862, to John Dennis and his parents, Richland County, Ohio from John’s brother. In camp near Bardstown, Kentucky with the 64th Regiment, Company B, Ohio Volunteers, he praises Kentucky’s farms, crops and springs, and refers to two men of his acquaintance: William Clark, who is serving with the Confederate Army, and Charles Clark, who he met in Louisville, Kentucky and who boasted of his regiment’s superior skills and African American servants. The envelope bears a pro-Union image.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3299. Letter, dated 19 August, of Eliza (Brand) Woodward to her niece Lily Duncan, Lexington, Kentucky. Written on mourning stationery, the letter offers condolences on the death of Lily’s daughter Ellen on 17 August 1881. Mrs. Woodward expresses shock and sadness, asks about the circumstances of the girl’s death, and regrets her inability to offer comfort in person.

Student paper titled “Blacksmithing” in which Larry Brooks explores the history of blacksmithing, the proper way to shoe a horse, appropriate tools and supplies, and how craftsmen use various smithing methods to repair items such as shovels, plows, and wagon wheels. Brooks collected information from Earl Austin, a longtime farmer and blacksmith from Beaver Dam, Kentucky. The paper also contains black and white photographs of blacksmithing implements, the shoeing process, and Austin’s workspace.

Student paper titled “The Preacher’s Just Like a Grasshopper: A Study of a Kentucky Song Maker” in which Steven Schulman details the life of Howess Dewey Winfrey, a song-maker from Cumberland County. Schulman collected folk songs and performances from Winfrey over the course of two months. His fieldwork revealed that Winfrey was a creator of satirical tunes, which were influenced by his childhood, his experiences with the Church of the Nazarene, his time spent as a logger, his relationships with family and friends, politics, and land ownership. Letter, 10 August 1863, of George Messer to his wife Lottie Messer in DeWitt County, Illinois, written from camp southwest of Lebanon, Kentucky. He describes the forces gathering in the area and praises his current officers. Despite the amenities of his camp, he recounts the prevalence of illness and his struggle with chronic diarrhea, which he fears will prevent him and others from accompanying the regiment on a planned march to east Tennessee.
