Dreaming Big: Library-Led Digital Scholarship For Undergraduates At A Small Institution, Janelle Wertzberger, R.C. Miessler

Janelle Wertzberger

In the summer of 2016, Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library piloted a student-focused, library-led initiative designed to promote creative undergraduate research: the Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship. The fellowship is a ten-week, paid summer program for rising sophomores and juniors that introduces the student fellows to digital scholarship, exposes them to a range of digital tools, and provides space for them to converse with appropriate partners about research practices and possibilities. Unlike other research fellowship opportunities, the Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship is programmatic, based on a curriculum designed to provide students a broad introduction to digital scholarship. Digital tools, project management, documentation, …

The Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15).Pdf, Charles Sabo Dec 2017

The Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15).Pdf, Charles Sabo

Charles Sabo

The concept of the resurrection has been an event that has been contemplated and argued by Jews, Christians and all other religions. To provide a historical context of the resurrection, it needs to be narrowed to those that have taken into consideration what was spoken by Jesus Christ and His Apostles. Judaism first was given the promise of a resurrection, but not provided with much detail on how and when it would occur. There were, however, specific passages within the Old Testament that provided Israel with prophetic pictures and clues of the coming resurrection. Paul found it necessary to remind …

Iran At The Venice Biennale 1956–1966: A Rediscovery Of The Country’S Participation And Its Role In The Development And Legacy Of Iranian Modernism, Lauren Pollock

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reconstructs Iran’s participation at the Venice Biennale from 1956–1966. In examining the trajectory of artists represented, art works exhibited, and the critical reception, I argue that Iran’s presence at Venice during these years is crucial to an understanding of the development and legacy of Iranian modernism.

“A Desperate Pioneerism:” Laura Márquez’S Art And Social Engagement In 1960s Paraguay, Susan Breyer

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the art and social engagement of Laura Márquez in 1960s Paraguay. Despite the challenging economic, political, and social contexts that Márquez encountered throughout the decade, she acted as an invaluable “transmitter” – both carrying international artistic forms and concepts into Paraguay, and diffusing her experience of local reality.

Franz Roh And Visual Juxtaposition In Foto-Auge, Irini Zervas

Theses and Dissertations

This study of Foto-Auge (1929) is grounded on the approach of Franz Roh and aims to unlock the book’s meaning through an analysis of layout and visual sequence. This thesis also demonstrates how Foto-Auge proclaims photography’s ability not merely to record, but to disrupt any sense of reality in images.

Una Sensibilità Scientifica: Giacomo Balla’S Painting Of Light, 1900-1914, Luise Mahler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how science shaped Giacomo Balla’s pioneering style of abstraction. A reconsideration of his oeuvre from 1900 to the advent of Italian Futurism demonstrates that his artistic vision of light—indebted to popular scientific imagery and what might be called "prosthetic" visual technologies—anticipated the emergent Futurist aesthetics.

Análisis De Leitmotivos En Las Obras De Fray Luis De León Y San Juan De La Cruz, Mason French

College of Arts and Cultural Studies Student Works

Grenzüberschreitungen Und Kulturvermittlung Im Werk Von Robert(O) Schopflocher, Reinhard Andress Dec 2017

Grenzüberschreitungen Und Kulturvermittlung Im Werk Von Robert(O) Schopflocher, Reinhard Andress

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

“It Is Non-Summit” And “It Is Abnormal” Unpacking Whiteness: Critiquing Racialized And Gendered Representations In Non-Summit (Bijeongsanghoedam)., Seonah Kim Dec 2017

“It Is Non-Summit” And “It Is Abnormal” Unpacking Whiteness: Critiquing Racialized And Gendered Representations In Non-Summit (Bijeongsanghoedam)., Seonah Kim

Communication ETDs

In this thesis, I focus on a Korean entertainment show Non-Summit as a media text through which to investigate racialized and gendered representations of transnational identities in Korean media. Specifically, I examine discursive strategies through which foreign male characters are racialized and gendered in order to interrogate the hegemonic masculinity of White, Western, and heterosexual identities. On the basis of a critical textual analysis of Non-Summit, I discuss Non-Summit reproduces and distributes representations of White, Western, and heterosexual masculinity as dominant foreign identities. Furthermore, I examine the ideological implications of such discourse on the hegemonic foreign identities given the …

Manipulated Manipulation: The Political Origins And Implications Of Shakespeare's Henry V, Kate Morton Dec 2017

Manipulated Manipulation: The Political Origins And Implications Of Shakespeare's Henry V, Kate Morton

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Shakespeare’s Henry V has long been one of the most ambiguous adaptations of the story of England’s most celebrated historical figure: King Henry V. This adaptation raises the question of why Shakespeare presents Henry V in a way that not only differs significantly from the other accounts of Henry V’s life, but is also entirely ambiguous as to whether this presentation of Henry V’s character is optimistic or pessimistic in nature. In my thesis, I will argue that the ambiguities present in Henry V are actually a result of Shakespeare's own stress over the political succession looming over England at …

La Revolte Des Prostituées/The Sex Workers Revolt: A Dual Analysis, Sean Prpick, Maud Beaulieu Dec 2017

La Revolte Des Prostituées/The Sex Workers Revolt: A Dual Analysis, Sean Prpick, Maud Beaulieu

RadioDoc Review

This documentary chronicles how hundreds of French sex workers went on strike in 1975 and occupied five Catholic churches to protest against police abuse and government closure of their workplace. Forty years on, Australian producer, academic and sex worker rights researcher Eurydice Aroney revisits the Lyon cathedral occupied by the women with the full blessing of its cleric, Père Blanc, now ninety years old. Interviews with Blanc and some of the original sex worker protesters are interwoven with archival material to make a compelling audio story, selected as a finalist for the UK In The Dark award (2015).

Afterparty, Patrick M. Werle Dec 2017

Afterparty, Patrick M. Werle

Creative Writing Programs

Afterparty is built on the question, “Can one overcome the past?”...I think. While the work flows on a loose timeline, I do not intend the manuscript to be a story. As the poems drift in and out of time periods; childhood, adolescence, fatherhood, I hope that this is also a collection that can be opened in the middle or paged through and still be successful. Of course, as the artist, I would love for people to take the journey beginning to end. And I also believe that poetry collections should be able to have a reader jump in at any …

Stray Threads: Factory Women In Fiction From The Freehold Farm To The Rented Room, 1840-1875, Meghan Wadle Dec 2017

Stray Threads: Factory Women In Fiction From The Freehold Farm To The Rented Room, 1840-1875, Meghan Wadle

English Theses and Dissertations

As industrialism unmoored agrarian-based American values surrounding independence, individualism, and the gender roles attached to labor, it demanded imaginative solutions for these potentially broken ideologies in antebellum fiction. This project, in two parts, explores how factory women stood at the center of the industrializing U.S.’s cultural identity crisis. In Part One authors from Herman Melville to Harriet Jacobs imagine women laboring in the industrial marketplace as a form of deviant dependency. Here, sexualized depictions of female laborers symptomatize national anxieties about how economic change might transform political freedom by simultaneously modifying traditional forms of patriarchal control. In Part Two, Lucy …

Caspar David Friedrich, The Romantic Hero, And Early German Nationalism, Morgan D. Ward Dec 2017

Caspar David Friedrich, The Romantic Hero, And Early German Nationalism, Morgan D. Ward

Art and Art History Theses

Like many artists, Caspar David Friedrich was affected by the events of his time: the defeat of Prussia by the forces of Napoleon (1806), the following occupation of the German lands (1810), the struggles of the Wars of Liberation (1813-1814) and their disappointing aftermath. He was also greatly influenced by the literary trends of the time, especially the concept of the Romantic hero and the cult of the heroic soldier, ideas that he was exposed to among his circle of friends. The paintings that Friedrich created between 1808 and 1821 display the tensions of the era, emphasizing the feelings of …

From Tenement To Trendy, John Friia

Capstones

Hell's Kitchen is located on the West Side of Manhattan. It is bounded by 34th and 59th streets between Eighth Avenue and the Hudson River. The now affluent neighborhood was once home to tenements, murderous gangs and speakeasies. Luxury apartment complexes and high-end restaurants are reshaping the identity of the once working-class neighborhood.

As a record collector and journalist, I take stock of what they mean to me while searching to better understand the “Vinyl Revival” of the past decade. I meet and pick at people who’ve worked with the medium at its height, its demise, and today. We talk about what digitization has done and will do to music, and what vinyl means to them.
