Romans 1:18-2:29: A Stylometric Reconsideration, Keith L. Yoder Dec 2012

Romans 1:18-2:29: A Stylometric Reconsideration, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

Here I use the tools of multivariate data analysis to reconsider the proposal that Romans 1:18-2:29 was not originally composed by Paul. I examine the distributions of the 35 most frequent words in the New Testament epistolary Greek text, using Correspondence Analysis, Cluster Analysis, and Linear Discriminant Analysis. These tests jointly reveal a distinct statistical demarcation between Romans 1:18-29 and the undisputed Pauline letters, as well as differentiation between the undisputed Paulines and all the other letters of the New Testament. Data analysis thus supports the proposal that Romans 1:18-2:29 is a non-Pauline text.

Stosunki Chrześcijańsko-Żydowskie W History, Pamięci I Sztuce: Europejski Kontekst Dzieł W Katedrze Sandomierskiej [Jewish-Christian Relations In History, Memory, And Art: European Context For The Paintings In The Sandomierz Cathedral], Magda Teter, Urszula Stępień

Magda Teter

Pragmatic Abilities In Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Follow-Up Study, Jessica Devilliers, Brooke Myers, Robert J. Stainton Dec 2012

Pragmatic Abilities In Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Follow-Up Study, Jessica Devilliers, Brooke Myers, Robert J. Stainton

Robert J. Stainton

Our guiding question, here and in two prior papers, is: Are some pragmatic tasks more difficult than others for people diagnosed with ASDs? For instance, it has been tentatively suggested by Happé (1995) that understanding irony is more difficult for ASD speakers than understanding metaphor is. Or again, our 2007 paper urged, on the basis of corpus examples, that while speakers with ASDs show difficulties with “figurative language” generally – metaphor, irony, conversational implicature (Dennis et al. 2001; Gold et al. 2010; Happé 1995; MacKay & Shaw, 2004) – they are relatively proficient with pragmatic determinants of literal speech act …

Can A Pluralistic Commonwealth Endure?, Brian M. Mccall Dec 2012

Can A Pluralistic Commonwealth Endure?, Brian M. Mccall

Brian M McCall

This article considers whether the American pluralist system can satisfy Cicero's definition of a commonwealth as a multitude united in a definition of law and justice. The analysis is based upon a review of Thaddeus Kozinski's book, The Problem or Religious Pluralism and Why Philosophers Can't Solve It. This book critiques the philosophy of John Rawls, Jacques Maritain and Alisdaire MacIntyre. The critique is based upon Cicero's definition of a commonwealth and the article concludes that a society which maintains a deep pluralism over the first principles of law and justice cannot survive as a commonwealth.

The Knotted Ball Of Twine: Unraveling Standard English, American English, And Coded Language, Jeanne Law Bohannon Dec 2012

The Knotted Ball Of Twine: Unraveling Standard English, American English, And Coded Language, Jeanne Law Bohannon

Jeanne Law Bohannon

How do we define Standard English? Spoken English is culturally relevant and exists within a societal context, while written English exists in a more formally defined context. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines standard English from 1836 as “the English that with respect to spelling, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary is substantially uniform though not devoid of regional differences, that is well established by usage in the formal and informal speech and writing of the educated, and that is widely recognized as acceptable wherever English is spoken and understood” (2008). This modern, descriptive characterization of Standard English provides usage as a key norm …

Datación Del Príncipe: Inicio Y Culminación, William J. Connell Dec 2012

Datación Del Príncipe: Inicio Y Culminación, William J. Connell

William Connell

This article establishes a new, more precise date
for the completion of Machiavelli’s work on The
Prince. Newly discovered documents in Florentine
Archives from July 1515 reveal that Niccolò
Machiavelli and his family were struggling to deal
with an unexpected crisis that had befallen them
in the previous several months. That crisis must
have been none other than the failure of
Machiavelli’s Prince to win favor with the book’s
dedicatee, Lorenzo de’ Medici the Younger. The
presentation of the book to Lorenzo can now be
dated between 15 May 1515 and 3 July 1515, and
probably toward the beginning of …

Exhibition Review: Clive Holden: Media/Mediated, Matthew Ryan Smith, Ph.D.

Matthew Ryan Smith, Ph.D.

An approach to artmaking that is driven by the prospect of chance, by the accidental, is reliant upon the inherent rationale of the natural world. There, chaos constitutes change (or vice versa) and reveals new forms that displace and/or update the old. Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist Clive Holden’s recent practice has manipulated the properties of the natural world into an aesthetic strategy. Utilizing the randomization and dynamism found in nature serves to unsettle and reconfigure his installations, transforming them into ever-evolving media.

Shapeshifting: Transformations In Native American Art, Matthew Ryan Smith, Ph.D.

Matthew Ryan Smith, Ph.D.

Concise, clear and consistent, the catalogue that accompanies the exhibition Shapeshifting: Transformations in Native American Art establishes a critical dialogue between historical and contemporary Native American objects. Mounted at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts by the PEM’s resident curator of Native American Art and Culture Karen Kramer Russell, the exhibition “offers an exciting new orientation for understanding Native creativity and art-making as an all-encompassing product of its time, grounded in an artist’s community, philosophy, language, and environment” (15). Essentially, the exhibition project embraced chronological and aesthetic differences to reconsider the ways that Native American transhistoricity can function as …

The Desert Of The Ethical, Jules Simon Dec 2012

The Desert Of The Ethical, Jules Simon

Jules Simon

As far as I can tell, the concept of “desert” in Levinas’s thought seems to retain its
familiar associations, namely, as an environment that can be empirically characterized
as inhospitable, barren, and destitute of the kinds of material resources necessary for
the growth of the autonomous and autochthonous subjective self. It also seems plausible
that a relevant extension of desert conditions to human community in Levinas’s
topography would be the “cities” of concentration camps of the Holocaust. In other
words, there is a correlative interior type of desert that, with Levinas, can be intuited
as what I am calling a …
