Darkness Is Your Candle, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2013-2014 Raise the Bar

World music supergroup East of the River has a very different type of holiday concert in store this upcoming season. With a focus on the winter solstice, family, and new beginnings, Darkness Is Your Candle explores music of the Mediterranean, Balkans, Armenia, and the Middle East, presenting the earliest songs of those extraordinary cultures. Taking its name from the work of Persian poet Rumi, the program shifts from a lunar atmosphere in the first half of the program into rebirth and daylight in the second half, creating a unique and unforgettable musical journey for the New Year.

While strong support for the …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2013-12-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Mickey & Judy, December 3 – 7, 2013, Theatre Sheridan Dec 2013

Mickey & Judy, December 3 – 7, 2013, Theatre Sheridan

Theatre Sheridan Productions

Mickey & Judy is a hilarious pseudo-memoir, chronicling Sheridan alumni Hughes’ childhood obsession with musicals and his journey from the psychiatric ward to Off-Broadway. Chock-full of comical anecdotes about his childhood spent channelling Judy Garland, dramatic readings from his actual doctor’s charts, and a musical score that borrows from Broadway classics and the Judy Garland songbook, Mickey & Judy is about learning to accept yourself and following your dreams. Since its world premiere at the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival, Mickey & Judy has performed across North America and Internationally to sold-out audiences and rave five-star review. Mickey & Judy has …

Bruce Springsteen: American Poet And Prophet, Donald L. Deardorff Ii Dec 2013

Bruce Springsteen: American Poet And Prophet, Donald L. Deardorff Ii

Faculty Books

Like other major musical artists, Bruce Springsteen’s work has reflected, revealed, and reacted to modern American realities over the course of his forty-year career.

Since releasing his first record in 1973, Springsteen has sold more than a hundred million albums worldwide, played thousands of concerts, and won Grammy, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Academy awards. More importantly, however, he is one of the few twentieth-century singer-songwriters to serve as the voice of his generation, a defining artist whose works reflect the values, dreams, and concerns of many Americans. In Bruce Springsteen: American Poet and Prophet, Donald L. Deardorff II explores …
