A 'Foundation In Nature': New Economic Criticism And The Problem Of Money In 1690s England, Courtney Smith Dec 2011

A 'Foundation In Nature': New Economic Criticism And The Problem Of Money In 1690s England, Courtney Smith

Courtney Weiss Smith

This essay reconsiders new economic criticism’s assumptions about the role of nature in late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century economic thought. I take the debates surrounding the English recoinage crisis as a test case. As I read economic tracts by John Locke, William Lowndes, Nicholas Barbon, and James Hodges alongside an array of anonymous polemical policy pamphlets, I demonstrate that many writers addressed the recoinage problem by turning with urgency to the created natural world. They believed that close attention to the material properties of silver bullion, for example, could access encoded clues about God’s will for human economic institutions. I …

Abraham Lincoln & The Colony On Ile-A-Vache, Robert Bray Dec 2011

Abraham Lincoln & The Colony On Ile-A-Vache, Robert Bray

Robert Bray

Just after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect (1 Jan 1863) Abraham Lincoln signed a contract with two New York capitalists to transport 500 newly-freed ex-slaves to Ile-a-Vache, Haiti, where they would, under company supervision, found and maintain a colony. From the start, little went right. Failure was due largely to mismanagement and chicanery on the part of the company. The emigrants lived (and died) miserably on Ile-a-Vache for nearly a year, until they were returned to the U. S. on a government transport ship in March, 1864. The debacle seems to have cured Lincoln of his fascination with colonization.

Conceptualising The Structure Of The Biophysical Organising Principle: Triple-Aspect-Theory Of Being, Joe Naimo Dec 2011

Conceptualising The Structure Of The Biophysical Organising Principle: Triple-Aspect-Theory Of Being, Joe Naimo

Joe Naimo

When examining the human being as a conscious being, we are still to
arrive at an understanding of, firstly, the conditions required whereby
physical processes give rise to consciousness and secondly, how
consciousness is something fundamental to life as an intrinsic part of
nature. Humans are complex organisms with myriad interacting systems
whereby the convergence of the activities toward the support and
development of the whole organism requires a high level of organisation.
Though what accounts for the dynamic unity of the human being? From
an empirical perspective the question remains unanswered. The aim of
this paper is conceptually establish …

Lonergan On Analogy, Matthew Ogilvie Dec 2011

Lonergan On Analogy, Matthew Ogilvie

Matthew Ogilvie

Matthew C. Ogilvie
shows how Lonergan makes regular use of analogy in
systematic theology, in the light of the teaching of the
first Vatican Council.
Differently to what is happening in recent theological currents, Lonergan places
value in the analogy having the enrichment of understanding in view, and not
as a free construction of conceptual schemes. In this way the difference and
disproportion between the analogical base of reference and the transcendent
reality of god is dealt with intact.

Sociocultural Theory-Guided College-Level Mandarin Chinese Hybrid Course Design, Li Jin Dec 2011

Sociocultural Theory-Guided College-Level Mandarin Chinese Hybrid Course Design, Li Jin

Li Jin

This paper explains how sociocultural theory (SCT), particularly its three key concepts: mediation, zone of proximal development, and agency, can be used to guide the course design of college-level 1st-year Mandarin Chinese hybrid courses. Specific examples are illustrated to demonstrate how three aspects of the hybrid course design: 1) learning materials and tasks, 2) teacher-student and student-student interaction, and 3) assessments, are guided from a SCT perspective. The feedback from students enrolled in a college-level hybrid Mandarin Chinese course sequence is also provided.

Interviewed By John Shorb, On Disrupting Homelessness, Laura A. Stivers

Laura Stivers

aura Stivers, professor of ethics at Dominican University of California, recently investigated the issue of homelessness from a Christian perspective. The result was her new book Disrupting Homelessness: Alternative Christian Approaches. She shared her thoughts on how churches and individual Christians might approach homelessness on a systematic level based on biblical understandings of hospitality and justice.

Laura Stivers

Dr. Laura Stivers, Dean, School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and former Associate Professor of Ethics believes homelessness is a preventable problem in the United States. The solution begins with education about the root causes of homelessness, but the political will to change social policies that create inequality and poverty also will be necessary.

Protestantism And Progress In The Year Xii: Charles Villers' Essay On The Spirit And Influence Of Luther's Reformation (1804), Michael Printy Dec 2011

Protestantism And Progress In The Year Xii: Charles Villers' Essay On The Spirit And Influence Of Luther's Reformation (1804), Michael Printy

Michael Printy

This article examines Charles Villers's Essay on the Spirit and Influence of Luther's Reformation (1804) in its intellectual and historical context. Exiled from France after 1792, Villers intervened in important French and German debates about the relationship of religion, history, and philosophy. The article shows how he took up a German Protestant discussion on the meaning of the Reformation that had been underway from the 1770s through the end of the century, including efforts by Kantians to seize the mantle of Protestantism for themselves. Villers's essay capitalized on a broad interest in the question of Protestantism and its meaning for …
