After You're Gone: An Installation By Beth Lipman, Judith Tannenbaum, Beth Lipman
Journals
Exhibition Notes, Number 33, Fall 2008. In July 2006, RISD Museum director Hope Alswang and curator Judith Tannenbaum encountered Beth Lipman’s 2o-foot-long glass tableau entitled Bancketje (Banquet), then on exhibit at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington. This tour de force, created in 2003 (now in the permanent collection of the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.), inspired The RISD Museum to invite the artist to visit its galleries, as well as collections in storage, in order to create an exhibition here. In October 2007, Lipman visited the Museum and was particularly excited by its American period …

The importance of developing a comprehensive digital design presence as well a as digital business strategy has become a necessity for graphic design practitioners. In this report I review how this could be achieved and document the development of a coherent digital presence that has a more inclusive approach to client/designer communication and that better suits the needs of a graphic designer in industry.
This document provides a detailed overview of my research and development for this MA Project. It sets down the course of action and the directions that the project took and identifies the aims and objectives I …
Embodiment And Emptiness: Alison Rector’S Interior Spaces, Shannon Egan
Embodiment And Emptiness: Alison Rector’S Interior Spaces, Shannon Egan
Art and Art History Faculty Publications
Alison Rector’s painting Green Kitchen (2002) depicts a seemingly ordinary domestic interior: a flight of stairs ascends to the right, and a foyer, furnished simply with a wooden table and chairs, leads to a kitchen and, further still, to a broom closet. The old-fashioned wood-burning stove, muted and patterned wallpaper, antiqued furniture, brass sconce, and wide-planked hardwood floor characterize this home as possibly from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, but the lack of figures and personal effects makes the definitive time of occupancy ambiguous. Rector’s unoccupied interiors, however, do not appear abandoned. Even in the quietest of her …
Id, Shannon Egan
Id, Shannon Egan
Schmucker Art Catalogs
The five sculptors in ID challenge the conventions of representational self-portraiture. In their selective and often abstract use of figuration, these artists engage the identification of self as it is situated socially and institutionally—one’s “I.D.”—as well as the psychoanalytic dimensions of the “id.”
The exhibition’s title introduces a kind of paradoxical conflict between public identification, found in various bureaucratic forms of I.D. (passports, drivers’ licenses, and Social Security numbers, for example), and the id, a Freudian classification for the most basic and unconscious physical drives (sex, food, aggression).
All of these artists respond to the seeming incongruities of I.D. and …
Perfumed Textiles, Katia Johansen
Perfumed Textiles, Katia Johansen
Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings
As a museum professional, I work with memories. And nothing is more evocative than scent, which is at the same time both fragile and powerful. Perfumed textiles and costume are a standard part of every culture, yet few objects have been identified, and virtually none have been preserved. Perfuming was traditionally used to mask bad odors from use or from production processes like tanning and dyeing, for ceremonial reasons, or simply to create a favorable impression of the wearer. Perfuming methods included using incense, laundry aids, sweet bags, fragrant oils and fuming pans. Unintentional perfuming also occurred, of which we …

Industrial Production And The Hand Process: Making A Bridge, Catharine Ellis
Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings
I am a weaver, a dyer, an artist, and an educator. I speak to you today from the perspective of a maker because it is from the process of making that I have researched and learned what I know about taiten shibori.
My own work has been defined for the last number of years by an original process that I call woven shibori. The genesis of that process was the introduction to stitched or nui shibori. As I made hand stitches into a piece of cloth in preparation for making a resist for dyeing, I realized that a …

Human Behavior Centered Museum Guided Tour System, Yenmin Chen
Theses
As new technologies appear, many devices or tools become more and more powerful. New technology also gives us more options to choose from in our daily lives, not only in ways used for school, but also with the devices used to surf the Internet. Certainly, we have more variety available in the various aspects of our lives, such as entertainment, education, work etc.--but new technology brings with it more problems, too. If new technology doesn't come with new thinking, life may not be better than before.
Some designers focus on human factors too much; they forget to consider how people …
Soft Or Modern? Delineating Curtains In Domestic Interiors Of Modern Architecture, Açalya Allmer
Soft Or Modern? Delineating Curtains In Domestic Interiors Of Modern Architecture, Açalya Allmer
Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings
These are the words of the Bourgeois, the fictive character in Le Corbusier’s seminal book, The Decorative Art of Today. Le Corbusier’s witty attack on curtains was common in the dominant rhetoric of modern architecture in which drapes and curtains were regarded as superficial, fleeting, and effeminate. In spite of this, curtains were never a legitimate discussion among modern architects. Conceivably this explains the lack of scholarship on the use of drapery and curtains in modern architecture. In this paper I will deal with domestic interiors; exploring the correlation that exists between the re-presentation and function of curtains in …

A Stitch In Time: New Embroidery, Old Fabric, Changing Values, Annin Barrett
Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings
Using recent embroidered artwork by Ghada Amer, Orly Cogan, and Louise Bourgeois as a bellwether for changing social relationships, this paper will discuss how values regarding time, family and gender roles have evolved in the past couple of generations. Rozsika Parker’s pivotal 1984 book, The Subversive Stitch, recognized the significant relationship between women’s social history and their embroidery styles, passed down through generations in Europe and America. We can extend that analytical approach to embroidered artwork being made today. Parker’s book ends with 1970s feminist art, such as Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party. This work achieved a kind of equal but …

Introduction
In a red world bathed in shimmering gold light, a man sits with his head in his hand as wild beasts encircle him. He is emaciated, has unkempt hair, and wears only a waistcloth—but he has a dreamy smile on his face. Nearby, a camel bears a palanquin carrying a stately woman, her head tipped to one side, arm outstretched from the window of her traveling abode toward her lover. Beneath her, the signature “Work of Ghiyath” is woven in Kufic script inside an eightpointed star on the palanquin (Fig. 1).
This depiction of the literary characters Layla and …
Self-Reference Through White Space In Graphic Design, Can Birand
Self-Reference Through White Space In Graphic Design, Can Birand
Theses and Dissertations
In the graphic design, successful use of white space provides the designed object with a strong reference to its material quality and internal structure. Showing the paper breaks the wall between the design and the viewer, and gives the audience a better understanding of the construction of graphic design. White space is devoid representation, which leads the work to become completely honest about its materiality. This project explores different methods and processes for creating aesthetic/conceptual integrity in graphic design by using white space as a primary device.

An Egyptian Royal Portrait Head In The Collection Of The Michael C. Carlos Museum At Emory University, Karen Margaret Bryson
An Egyptian Royal Portrait Head In The Collection Of The Michael C. Carlos Museum At Emory University, Karen Margaret Bryson
Art and Design Theses
This thesis discusses a small, red granite, Egyptian royal portrait head in the collection of the Michael C. Carlos Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. The head is determined to be a fragment from a group depicting the king in front of the monumental figure of a divine animal, probably a ram or baboon. Scholars have attributed the head to the reigns of various New Kingdom pharaohs, including Horemheb and Seti I, but on more careful examination its style demonstrates that it dates to the reign of Ramesses II (1304-1237 B.C.).

Exhibition Notes, Number 30, Summer 2008.The Museum of Art was founded simultaneously with the Rhode Island School of Design in 1877 by a group of women led by Eliza Radeke's mother, Helen Adelia Rowe (Mrs. Jesse) Metcalf. RISD’s stated purpose was to educate artists in drawing, painting, modeling, and design for the benefit of industry and art, and to educate the public so that they could appreciate and support art and design. The creation of a museum collection was inseparable from these objectives. Both Eliza Radeke and Helen Danforth, as heirs to those aspirations, made extraordinary individual gifts to …

Expertise For The Visually-Oriented From The Visually-Oriented: Arlis/Na Contributions To The Library Profession, Jeanne M. Brown
Library Faculty Publications
ARLIS/NA stands for “The Art Libraries Society of North America.” How many of you have heard of ARLIS before? The name of the society is a bit misleading since the Society is composed of individuals not libraries. ARLIS has members whose responsibilities are in art, architecture, and design, and who work in museums, public libraries, academic libraries and visual resources collections. The Society holds an annual conference, has an active publications program, maintains a complex web site, and addresses the continuing education needs of its members.
My focus today will be on the publications program, since that is readily accessible …

It has long been acknowledged that planar hand drawing movements conform to a relationship between movement speed and shape, such that movement speed is inversely proportional to the curvature to the power of one-third. Previous literature has detailed potential explanations for the power-law’s existence as well as systematic deviations from it. However, the case of speed-shape relations for three-dimensional (3D) drawing movements has remained largely unstudied. In this paper we first derive a generalization of the planar power law to 3D movements, which is based on the principle that this power law implies motion at constant equi-affine speed. This generalization …

Art and Design Theses
Wayfinding Design for Randomly Developed Areas: The Beltline Case Study proposes a wayfinding signage program for the new public transit project in Atlanta known as the Beltline. This program unites the Beltline with other transit options within Atlanta, such as MARTA, to form a comprehensive transit system. This program will be known as The Atlanta Unified Transit Program. My proposed signage program includes map kiosks, information posts and signs promoting the various levels of transit offered in Atlanta as well as information about the areas surrounded by public transit. The signage examples created for my thesis are prototypes that could …

Art and Design Theses
The purpose of this thesis paper is to investigate womanist theology and method, along with restoration practices involving spirituality and healing within the context of the visual arts. The thesis exhibition will attempt to create new visual possibilities that inform womanist theological scholarship in terms of promoting contemporary female religious imagery within a metaphorical language. While womanist theology is steeped in interdisciplinary practices, it has yet to consider seriously the studio arts as a means to explore and develop the womanist language. This study will investigate how essential and natural the visual arts assist our understanding of spirituality, especially through …

John Williams Daniels' Paintings Of North Anson, Holly Hurd-Forsyth
Maine History
Five small oil paintings of the village of North Anson were given to the Maine Historical Society in 1999. They meticulously illustrate a rural Maine village in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and as such are important additions to our painting collection, which is comprised predominately of marine subjects and portraits. The paintings are attributed to John Williams Daniels (1845-1933), who married North Anson native Alice Steward (1846-1921), in 1876.

We are living in an age where the quantity of information has exceeded its quality. No doubt the digital and information revolutions have provided the world with countless positive improvements, but they have also increased the speed at which we live and work to the detriment of the heath of our world. This project explores ways in which designers can aid in an effort to slow down in order to reinvigorate a more sustainable graphic design product.
