In an increasingly online world interpersonal interactions become a less integral part of our cultural make-up. The exploration of this phenomenon is the thematic concept that activates Between You and Me - a triptych-split-screen short film and video installation. This text is dedicated to exploring how theme, technique, and theory are considered in the context of the film, and how character and form (more than narrative) illuminate the thematic concept.

This thesis tracks the formal and conceptual development of my work during the two years of graduate study at the VCU Photography and Film Department. It describes the influence of photography on my evolution as an artist and contextualizes my desire to expand the practice beyond the traditional limitations of the medium. This paper will talk about the videos and sculptural installation in my thesis exhibition. Shooting videos outside of the studio developed into a project overarching any individual video or its particular signs. Thus, this paper will focus on the video project with examples that follow a timeline of development, rather than the actual 6 videos on display in the exhibit. The two-part sculpture "Deer in the Headlights" is created in the context of these videos, and coexists with them in a specific architectural space.
