Maine Folklife, Vol. 1, Iss. 1, Maine Folklife Center

Maine Folklife Center Newsletter

So much has happened since the last Newsletter appeared that it will be impossible to cover it all, but perhaps a little history would help. Back in 1983 when I became Chair of Anthropology, Rita Breton came on line as Archives Manager...

At about this time we decided to change our name to the Maine Folklife Center, in de facto recognition both that archival work was only a part of what we were doing and that we were getting more and more into public programming. A further part of our plan was to absorb Northeast Folklore and the Northeast Folklore …

Seeds Of Missiology In The German Erweckung (1815–1848), Wayne A. Detzler

History Faculty Publications

It is my contention that seeds of a primitive missiology emerged early in the nineteenth century in Germany. This was necessitated by the vitality of the religious awakening known as the Erweckung. At first this missionary impulse was sporadic, ecumenical and individualistic. Johannes Aargaard regarded the ecumenical period of missions on the continent of Europe as lasting from 1800 to 1830 and the period following that as characterized by confessional missionary activity. By the same token he considered the emphasis of continental missions in the early years (1800–1820) to be that of training for missions. After 1820 the emphasis shifted …

Review Of: Breaking The Silence: Redress And Japanese American Ethnicity, By Yasuko I. Takezawa, Kevin Allen Leonard Jan 1995

Review Of: Breaking The Silence: Redress And Japanese American Ethnicity, By Yasuko I. Takezawa, Kevin Allen Leonard

History Faculty and Staff Publications

From 1983 until 1990, Yasuko I. Takezawa pursued graduate study at the University of Washington and engaged in field work in Seattle's Japanese American community. Breaking the Silence, a version of which was published in Japan in 1994, is the result of these years of research. Like Patricia Zavella's Women's Work and Chicano Families and Sylvia Yanagisako's Transforming the Past, this is a book by an anthropologist that should capture the interest of social historians.

Writing For Change: When Motive Matters, Nancy Mack Jan 1995

Writing For Change: When Motive Matters, Nancy Mack

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

The writer calls for a change in the teaching practices of college composition classes such that students' motives to write are respected. She advocates the use of active critique, ethnographic inquiry, and local advocacy as ways in which students can be instructed in writing for change. The writer discusses language and the motive to write, the meaningful memoir, the importance of respecting students' motives, and the teacher's motives. She presents an excerpt from an essay by a student in an undergraduate composition course as an example of writing that comes from a student's own ethical answerability and writing that gives …
