Nearly fifty years ago, some Bedouin shepherds stumbled upon a cache of ancient texts in caves near the Dead Sea, thirteen miles east of Jerusalem.
It soon became clear that this was the largest and most significant collection of manuscripts ever discovered in Palestine.
Finds Included the oldest witnesses to the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts of Jewish scripture-the Christian Old Testament-along with nonbiblical manuscripts certain to illuminate the tumultuous period of the destruction of the Second Temple and the time of Christ. The singularity of these texts has brought about one of the most protracted and painstaking endeavors of …

... white envy of black history, even though that history is written with whips and chains, extends to countless other visual and aural signifiers of black culture; in today's suburban enclaves it's hip-hop culture that brings the 'flava' to what many white kids apprehend as a flavorless cultural landscape.

Civil Society And Congregations As Public Moral Companions, Gary M. Simpson
Civil Society And Congregations As Public Moral Companions, Gary M. Simpson
Faculty Publications
In the midst of this morally charged situation might not Christian congregations hear again the call to a public vocation? As we ponder this prospect, two questions will guide our inquiry. First, where might Christian congregations locate a space in which they might attend to the public moral meaning of everyday rage? That public space, which we will explore, is “civil society.” Second, how can this public space of civil society be accessed so that its moral possibilities can be maximized? We will explore “communicative moral practice” as the best model for accessing the moral possibilities of civil society. What …

An Historical Critique Of The Emergence And Evolution Of Ernesto Che Guevara's Foco Theory, Matt D. Childs
An Historical Critique Of The Emergence And Evolution Of Ernesto Che Guevara's Foco Theory, Matt D. Childs

This article provides an analysis of Ernesto Che Guevara's theory of guerrilla warfare, the foco. The numerous changes to the originalfoco thesis, as presented in Guerrilla Warfare (1960), are examined in detail covering two dozen articles, speeches, essays, interviews and books authored by Guevara, Castro and Debray while stressing their relation to national and international politics. The author argues that there was an apparent discourse between Cuban politics and the numerous changes in Guevara's writings. Juxtaposing changes to the foco theory from 1960 to 1967, to Cuban historical events, reflects the political expedience of the 196os and the primary …

Kings And Counselors: The Politics Of Francis Bacon's Rhetorical Theory, Christopher Holcomb

English author Francis Bacon's letters to the courtiers of King James VI before the monarch succeeded Elizabeth I reveals his concept of rhetoric as a tool for political advancement. Bacon wrote several letters to gain the king's confidence, in which he expressed his intent to portray the king in the most positive light to his subjects once he enters England and assumes the throne. The letters are remarkable in the way they suggest that Bacon can create a persona for the king through the power of rhetoric, since Bacon includes the draft of a speech which he hoped would be …

On The Verge Of The Millennium: A History Of The Interpretation Of Revelation, Craig R. Koester

The power of a book can be seen in its effects, and few books have had more dramatic effects than Revelation. Attempts to control the effects of the book by ignoring it or dismissing it have not been successful; Revela- tion’s secrets are too alluring. We do better to consider the effects the book has had on Christians over the centuries and to let this history of influence help shape a way to read the book that is both faithful and compelling.

The name “Seventh-day Adventist” reveals the major characteristics of the remnant church, highlighting the importance of the Sabbath and the second advent. From time to time one hears the opinion that these are really all that matter and that all other doctrines or fundamental beliefs are really not that crucial. Over the years, it seems, doctrine has gotten a bad reputation. Some feel we harp too much on doctrine and not enough on love. Others feel doctrines don’t save, only Jesus does. Still others would intimate that doctrines make us “legalistic” and “behavior-oriented.”

The Greening Of Theology: The Ecological Models Of Rosemary Radford Ruether, Joseph Sittler, And Jürgen Moltmann, Steven C. Bouma-Prediger

This volume examines the contributions of three contemporary theologians -- Rosemary Radford Ruether, Joseph Sittler, and Jurgen Moltmann -- to the development of Christian ecological theology. Against the charge that the Christian tradition is ecologically bankrupt, the author demonstratesthe intellectual and spiritual resources available within Christianity for addressing ecological issues. Of particular interest are Ruether's doctrine of God and her emphasis on ecojustice, Sittler's cosmic Christology and reconception of the relation between nature and grace, and Motlmann'sdoctrine of the Holy Spirit and argument for social trinitarianism. Beyond evaluating the issues raised by Ruether, Sittler, and Moltmann, the author presents sixteen …

The Contemporary Confucian-Christian Encounter: Interreligious Or Intrareligious Dialogue, Christian Jochim
The Contemporary Confucian-Christian Encounter: Interreligious Or Intrareligious Dialogue, Christian Jochim
Faculty Publications
The discipline of comparative religions has paid little attention to perhaps the most important religious phenomenon of the late twentieth century: interreligious dialogue. Available scholarship on this topic is largely written by and for participants in various dialogues. This scholarship is mainly on the normative issues that concern participants, thus leaving the need for descriptive, analytical scholarship largely unfilled. This essay engages in descriptive analysis of a relatively new twentieth-century dialogue—the Confucian-Christian dialogue—which, nevertheless, has deep historical roots. The essay turns, first, to history, summarizing two different periods of past Confucian-Christian encounter: the period from Matteo Ricci (1552–1610) to the …

Frederic Rzewski And Spontaneous Political Music, Christian T. Asplund
Frederic Rzewski And Spontaneous Political Music, Christian T. Asplund

I am intrigued by Frederic Rzewski's ability, in his pieces from the 1960s and 70s, to model socio-political phenomena and to teach specific lessons about these phenomena on both intuitive and intellectual levels to both performers and listeners. Performers in particular will literally experience these socio-political phenomena in the course of performing these pieces. Rzewski seems to have achieved Brecht's ideal of a gestic music without dryness or lack of credibility.
