Impulses Mirrored Darkly: Theatrical Images Of Idealism In The Weimar Republic, William Grange

William Grange

The conflict within German theatre during the Weimar Republic was a reflection of a larger struggles taking place within German society. Those struggles exploded at the conclusion of World War I, when relieved of the pressures of war, plays and productions came sizzling out like a cloud of steam when the valve was opened,” stated Herbert Ihering. Actor Fritz Kortner discovered totally new rhythms in performance. No actors were schooled in the new style, he said. It simply burst forth “lava-like” from “inner volcanoes.”

Reciprocity Revisited, Michael Pritchard Dec 1988

Reciprocity Revisited, Michael Pritchard

We agreed to make an exchange. I jokingly said, "Stage 2. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours." I sent him my paper, but he did not send his. At first I amused myself with the thought that Lawrence Kohlberg, of all people, had failed to satisfy even …

Euripides’ Medea: The Incarnation Of Disorder, Emily Mcdermott Dec 1988

Euripides’ Medea: The Incarnation Of Disorder, Emily Mcdermott

Emily A. McDermott

Euripides' Medea, produced in the year that the Peloponnesian War began, presents the first in a parade of vivid female tragic protagonists across the Euripidean stage. Throughout the centuries it has been regarded as one of the most powerful of the Greek tragedies. McDermott's starting point is an assessment of the character of Medea herself. She confronts the question: What does an audience do with a tragic protagonist who is at once heroic, sympathetic, and morally repugnant? We see that the play portrays a world from which all order has been deliberately and pointedly removed and in which the very …
