John E Rybolt

These contacts ceased when the tribes moved away from Vincentian areas, but they were occasionally renewed in the twentieth century. Two maps help to locate events.

"Away From Home And Amongst Strangers": Domestic Sphere, Public Arena, And Huckleberry Finn", Randall Knoper Dec 1988

"Away From Home And Amongst Strangers": Domestic Sphere, Public Arena, And Huckleberry Finn", Randall Knoper

Randall Knoper

Despite Mark Twain's situating the story “forty to fifty years ago” and in a rural river valley, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn closely engaged daily dilemmas and concerns of a Northern, urban, middle-class audience. As Carolyn Porter has argued, the familiar comprehension of American fiction as fantasies of escape from society and history, as authorial efforts to light out for the territory, needs to be dislodged by a sensitivity to such writings as acute responses to their immediate context – a developing industrial and capitalist society and culture. Although Huck's world may appear cut off from the landscape and society of …

Evolution In Thermodynamic Perspective: An Ecological Approach, Bruce H. Weber, David J. Depew, C Dyke, Stanley N. Salthe, Eric D. Schneider, Jeffrey S. Wicken, Robert E. Ulanowicz Dec 1988

Evolution In Thermodynamic Perspective: An Ecological Approach, Bruce H. Weber, David J. Depew, C Dyke, Stanley N. Salthe, Eric D. Schneider, Jeffrey S. Wicken, Robert E. Ulanowicz

David J Depew

Recognition that biological systems are stabilized far from equilibrium by self-organizing, informed, autocatalytic cycles and structures that dissipate unusable energy and matter has led to recent attempts to reformulate evolutionary theory. We hold that such insights are consistent with the broad development of the Darwinian Tradition and with the concept of natural selection. Biological systems are selected that re not only more efficient than competitors but also enhance the integrity of the web of energetic relations in which they are embedded. But the expansion of the informational phase space, upon which selection acts, is also guaranteed by the properties of …
