Thomas Reid On Language And Mind, Alastair L.V. Crosby Dec 2021

Thomas Reid On Language And Mind, Alastair L.V. Crosby

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The dissertation concerns Thomas Reid’s philosophy of language. In the first three chapters, I discuss his philosophy of language in relation to his developmental psychology. More specifically, I discuss his answers to two questions: (i) what does the ability to understand artificial linguistic signs make possible? and (ii) what makes the ability to understand artificial linguistic signs possible? The focus is on Reid’s claim that the mind’s ability to understand artificial linguistic signs makes it possible for it to acquire a number of distinct mental abilities, such as to conceive universals, to judge, and to reason. I argue this claim …

Life In Between: Prehispanic Settlement Patterns Of The Carabamba Valley, Northern Peru, Amedeo Sghinolfi Dec 2021

Life In Between: Prehispanic Settlement Patterns Of The Carabamba Valley, Northern Peru, Amedeo Sghinolfi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation is an archaeological study of the Carabamba Valley (ca. 150 - 3,500 m.a.s.l.) in Northern Peru, which aims to reconstruct settlement patterns through the longue durée (ca. 1800 B.C. - A.D. 1532). This study also documents the relations occupants of this frontier zone maintained with neighboring polities on the Peruvian North Coast (Virú Valley) and in the Northern Highlands. The valley features the resource-rich ecological niche called chaupiyunga, fed by rainwater that flows towards the Pacific Ocean and by a number of springs, where crops like coca, fruits, and vegetables can be easily grown. The Carabamba Valley also …

Does The Cogito Have (A) Sex?, Emily Laurent-Monaghan Nov 2021

Does The Cogito Have (A) Sex?, Emily Laurent-Monaghan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis begins with a critique of Quentin Meillassoux’s Après la finitude. Chapter One argues against Meillassoux’s injunction to abandon the “transcendental,” while putting forth a Lacanian solution to the “correlationist” problem. Chapter Two expounds the meaning of the Cartesian subject, with a Lacanian twist. Under this view, the subject is split, and this split carries the name “sexual difference.” The cogito is “split” qua sexual difference, whereby sexual difference names the structural antagonism/impossibility that exists in language and bears on all speaking subjects. The second chapter focuses primarily on explaining how sexual difference marks the cogito, by …

Fórmulas De Tratamiento En Ocaña, Colombia, Liceth Bohorquez Leon Nov 2021

Fórmulas De Tratamiento En Ocaña, Colombia, Liceth Bohorquez Leon

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The paradigm of forms of address has been a recurrent topic of study from a sociolinguistic perspective. Voseo, tuteo and ustedeo are the forms of address used in the Hispanic world. Voseo expreses confidence and familiarity, while tuteo same as voseo, denotes confidence and familiarity. Finally, ustedeo has a connotation of formality, respect and distance. This thesis aims to examine how forms of address are used in Ocaña, Colombia, and the relationship between their use and the social factors that affect the choice of pronoun. To achieve this aim, a sociolinguistic survey was applied to 88 participants. The …

Neoliberalism, Institutionalism, And Art, Declan Hoy Nov 2021

Neoliberalism, Institutionalism, And Art, Declan Hoy

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

As contemporary art has expanded to encompass further disparate activities under its umbrella, the various institutions of art can be looked to as the only constant and defining characteristic of art. These institutions are often seen in sharp contrast to spontaneous collectivism, the real, and radical creativity—attributes deeply valued within contemporary art. This creates a troubling situation in which institutions are seen as limiting the possibility of what art could be, and artworks are perceived as needing to escape the very institutions which define them in order to be deemed worthy. In this structure, contemporary art follows and validates the …

A Narrative Approach To The Barcarolles For Solo Piano By Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), Matthew T. Pope Nov 2021

A Narrative Approach To The Barcarolles For Solo Piano By Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), Matthew T. Pope

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) was one of the most influential composers in France at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. Through his compositions and roles as professor, and later, director of the Paris Conservatoire, Fauré was instrumental in the development of twentieth-century French music; shaping “the core of the first wave of French composers to be wholly ‘twentieth-century’” (Duchen, 2000).

Fauré’s compositions span 121 opuses and his works for voice and chamber ensemble are well known amongst singers and chamber musicians alike. However, his name and works for solo piano are unfamiliar amongst performing pianists. This …

The Effects Of Multilingualism And Music Experience On Tone And Vowel Discrimination Ability, Niloufar Ansari Dezfuly Nov 2021

The Effects Of Multilingualism And Music Experience On Tone And Vowel Discrimination Ability, Niloufar Ansari Dezfuly

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study investigates the effects of language background (monolingual/bilingual and early/late bilingual exposure), knowledge of a tonal language and music experience on auditory discrimination by employing tone and vowel discrimination tasks. A total number of 8,769 observations were analyzed using logistic regression to answer the following questions: (1) Do vowel and tone discrimination abilities correlate with language background in diverse groups of speakers such as monolinguals and bilinguals of different types (early/late bilinguals)? (2) Does musical training affect tone and vowel discrimination? (3) Does knowledge of tonal language affect tone discrimination? The findings suggest that with regard to vowel discrimination, …

Strings Of Sound And Sense: Towards A Feminine Sonic, Ellen N. Moffat Nov 2021

Strings Of Sound And Sense: Towards A Feminine Sonic, Ellen N. Moffat

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation listens to sound and sound art as sense, sensation, and sonic materiality. We make sense of the world from experience. The sense we make from sound is a subjective and intersubjective engagement with the sensoriality, audibility, and inaudibility of sound and its fluctuation. How we listen has potential to affect our relations with each other: how we hear these relations informs our understanding of the world. The question driving this research is how listening to others and their differences affects how we might hear others and the world differently. The potential for listening and hearing difference in the …

Le Lyrisme Chrétien Chez Anne De Marquets : Étude Et Édition De Ses Divines Poesies De Marc Antoine Flaminius (Paris, Chez Nicholas Chesneau, 1568/1569), Annick Macaskill

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis proposes an analysis of the theorization and practice of “Christian lyricism” in Les Divines Poesies de Marc Antoine Flaminius, the second independently published collection by (and clearly attributed to) Anne de Marquets (1533?-1588), a French Dominican nun. Published in 1568 (Paris, Nicolas Chesneau) and reissued in a second edition in 1569 (Paris, Nicolas Chesneau), this volume includes not only translations of the Italian Neo-Latin poet Marcantonio Flaminio (1497/8-1550), some of whose works had already, by 1568, been put on the Vatican Index, but other translations by the Dominican nun, as well as original spiritual songs and sonnets. …

In The Shadow Of The Atomic Cloud: Masculinity, Modernity, And The ‘Bomb’ In The Electoral Politics Of Canada And The United States, 1949-1963, Allen G. Priest

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation explores the impact of hegemonic masculinity, in the early Cold War era, on the electoral politics of Canada and the United States. It situates itself in the years between 1949 and 1963, arguably the height of nuclear fear, at a time when masculine ideals were adjusting to an uncertain postwar reality. Previous scholarship has established that the Cold War brought with it a retreat into domesticity, followed by an emergent “crisis” of masculinity. This monograph contributes to the historiography by demonstrating that the masculine architypes of the early Cold War are frequently reflected in electoral discourse. It also …

Ann Southam's Solo Piano Music: A Performance Guide, Amelia G. Yates

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Ann Southam (1937-2010) is one of Canada’s greatest contemporary composers. Best-known for her minimalist music, Southam composed twelve-tone, minimalist, jazz, and electroacoustic music for a variety of mediums including orchestral, chamber, and solo instrument. A significant portion of her creative output is for solo piano and this monograph is the first study of these works. This project demonstrates her wide-ranging approach to composition while also focusing on her minimalist music. It promotes Southam’s music and emphasizes her significance as a contemporary Canadian composer. This monograph can be used by performers, scholars, composers and teachers to deepen their understanding of Southam …

Four Canadian Faculties Of Music: A Preliminary Investigation Into Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, And De-Colonization In Post Secondary Education, Cynthia Lê, Sara Shifaw

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

This study, conducted through the lens of two Asian and African Canadian students and their lived experiences, examines four institutions, the University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto, McGill University, Western University, and the ways in which each addresses Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization (EDI-D). Accessing public documents such as syllabi, course descriptions, event calendars, published articles, strategic plans, released statements from students and faculty, and their online social media platforms, data was analyzed using qualitative document analysis (Altheide, Coyle, DeVriese, & Schneider, 2008). Overall themes were uncovered and examined (Cousins & Bourgeois, 2014; Khan & VanWynsberghe, 2008) including …

Unmade And Unmanned Men: Reading Traumatized Masculinity In Late Nineteenth-Century British Adventure Fiction Through The Lens Of The Indian “Mutiny” Of 1857, Madison A. Bettle

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Unmade and Unmanned Men: Reading Traumatized Masculinity in Late Nineteenth-Century British Adventure Fiction through the Lens of the Indian “Mutiny” of 1857 examines the selected adventure fiction of George Alfred Henty, Rudyard Kipling, and Joseph Conrad through the historico-political context of India’s First War of Independence, known in Victorian Britain as the Indian “Mutiny” of 1857. Examining masculine trauma in adventure fiction reveals how British men, who were themselves colonized by the Empire’s expectations of them, sought not only to recover from the scars inflicted by imperialism, but also to expose the Empire for inflicting the psychologically damaging expectations that …

Making Meaning About Reproductive Work: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Experiences Of Migrant Caregivers In Canada, Crystal Gaudet Oct 2021

Making Meaning About Reproductive Work: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Experiences Of Migrant Caregivers In Canada, Crystal Gaudet

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation examines how migrant caregivers ascribe meaning to the (re)productive labour that they provide within Canada’s Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP). Introduced in 1992, the LCP was a temporary foreign worker program that recruited women, primarily from the Philippines, to care for children, elderly people, and people with disabilities in the homes of their employers. Numerous studies have shown how the stipulations of the LCP produce precarious working conditions that render caregivers vulnerable to exploitation and abuse and that result in their deskilling and de-professionalization. The conditions engendered by the LCP reflect and reinforce the devalued status of care and …

Phantasms Of Hope: The Utopian Function Of Fantasy Literature, Alexander C. Morgan Oct 2021

Phantasms Of Hope: The Utopian Function Of Fantasy Literature, Alexander C. Morgan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Fantasy literature has long been considered an inherently conservative genre. However, Ernst Bloch’s Marxist theory of a utopian anticipatory consciousness and his concept of nonsynchronism recognize a progressive, utopian function within the archetypes and allegories of fairy tales, a precursor to modern fantasy. Bloch argues that archetypes are not static entities and can be repurposed to critique the world contemporary to a text’s production. Even archetypes produced under a past mode of production, like those used in fantasy, can therefore be anticipatory and utopian. By extending Bloch’s utopian function to include fantasy and integrating his philosophy with the historical-materialist hermeneutic …

The depletion and drying of river water across India is a growing problem in the contemporary period. According to the CPCB report on Assessment of Impact of Lockdown

on Water Quality of Major Rivers (2020-21), during the Corona Virus pandemic the water quality of rivers is alleviated a bit little due to minimum discharge of industrial waste, no access to pilgrimage, vehicle etc. On the other hand, it can be observed that dead bodies of the Covid-19 patients are dumped in the most sacred river Ganga in India which has increased the pollution level of the river and also will …

Evaluating Cranial Nonmetric Traits In Mummies From Pachacamac, Peru: The Utility Of Semi-Automated Image Segmentation In Paleoradiology, Cameron J. Beason

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Anthropologists employ biodistance analysis to understand past population interactions and relatedness. The objectives of this thesis are twofold: to determine whether a sample of five mummies from the pilgrimage centre, Pachacamac, on the Central Coast of Peru comprised local or non-local individuals through an analysis of cranial nonmetric traits using comparative samples from the North and Central Coasts of Peru and Chile; and to test the utility of machine-learning-based image segmentation in the image analysis software, Dragonfly, to automatically segment CT scans of the mummies such that the cranial nonmetric traits are visible. Results show that while fully automated segmentation …

Learning From Experience: Sasah Communications Intern And Osborne Holdings Intern, Andrew Fullerton Oct 2021

Learning From Experience: Sasah Communications Intern And Osborne Holdings Intern, Andrew Fullerton

SASAH 4th Year Capstone and Other Projects: Publications

I certainly learned about communications as a communications intern, and I certainly learned about copywriting as an intern copywriter at Osborne Holdings. However, what resonates the most with me a year after completing my experiential learning credits are not job-focused skills. Instead, what resonates the most with me are the things I learned about responsibility, valuing my skillset, and leadership.

As an intern with SASAH, I learned that communication is not just a skill; it is a responsibility. I learned this as I ran the SASAH Instagram page through a school year that was cut short because of the COVID-19 …

My Experience As A Phonetics Research Assistant, Damaris Holmes Oct 2021

My Experience As A Phonetics Research Assistant, Damaris Holmes

SASAH 4th Year Capstone and Other Projects: Publications

When my exchange was shortened due to COVID-19, I had the opportunity to undertake a part-time research assistant position with Dr. Jeff Tennant in the French and Linguistics departments at Western. Our project studied the rhythm and intonation of the speech of Franco-Ontarians. This paper serves as a description and reflection of this experiential learning opportunity. Specifically, it explores the challenges of operating within a multi-year project timeline as well as dealing with imposter syndrome as a student new to true research.

This project examined the spoken language of bilingual Ontarians to determine if the classically distinct rhythm patterns of …

This report will reflect upon my experiential learning experiences of interning at The Walrus and at Hive Media Group. The opportunity to work with a company as revolutionary as The Walrus and gain experience in the rapidly changing online publishing industry was an honour. I loved being a Digital Intern at The Walrus as it combined my passion for storytelling, interest in web development and production, and content strategy. I also loved working for Hive Media Group as a Mergers and Acquisitions Intern. M&A allowed me to work within a large ecosystem of sales, operations, and project management, and move …

The Dionysian Disintegrations Of Horacio Castellanos Moya's Tragic Antiheroes, Spencer Moyes Sep 2021

The Dionysian Disintegrations Of Horacio Castellanos Moya's Tragic Antiheroes, Spencer Moyes

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation presents analyses of six of Horacio Castellanos Moya’s antiheroes. The impetus for this study came from Alberto Moreiras’s article “The Question of Cynicism” (2014), which challenges Beatriz Cortez’s estética del cinismo—a theory that has dominated the academic discourse surrounding Castellanos Moya for the last two decades. Moreiras concludes his article by linking the political perspective of Castellanos Moya’s writings to tragedy rather than cynicism. The present study investigates whether Moreiras’s idea applies to Castellanos Moya’s works characterologically: are Castellanos Moya’s antiheroes tragic? This problem is resolved through psychological-affective character analyses.

Chapter One establishes that many of Castellanos …

Resonances: An Examination Of Republication Through Four Case Studies, F S. Nakhaie Sep 2021

Resonances: An Examination Of Republication Through Four Case Studies, F S. Nakhaie

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Republication, with or without textual changes, keeps a work in circulation. This protects the work from destruction but also affects how we receive it, because publication is always a socializing act. Despite its consequences for works and their reception, republication has not yet been theorized in textual studies. My dissertation addresses this research gap by employing the term resonance to discuss the relationships—between versions, contexts, and ideas—that develop out of republication. I explore republication at its extremes with four case studies of works that underwent major changes in republication. The first chapter examines Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray …

The Embroidered Tablecloth: How Locale Influences Eastern European Jewish Textile Production, Elena Solomon Sep 2021

The Embroidered Tablecloth: How Locale Influences Eastern European Jewish Textile Production, Elena Solomon

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Recent scholarship frames craft as distinct from art and as an encapsulation of cultural expression at a given moment. Building on that framework, this thesis analyzes the shifting attitudes towards the production of handmade textiles among Eastern European Jews in the US in the twentieth century, as influenced by their migration. To demonstrate the textile environment at that time, this thesis examines pre- and post-migration primary sources and autobiographical writing, including Mary Antin’s The Promised Land, supplemented with interviews of first- and second-generation immigrants to Chicago. In contrast with stereotypes about craft as historically stable, defining craft as regional …

No, Not Forgot - Were Unable To Reach: Literary Readings Of Desire In Land Art, Ioana Dragomir Aug 2021

No, Not Forgot - Were Unable To Reach: Literary Readings Of Desire In Land Art, Ioana Dragomir

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis provides a literary reading of desire in contemporary land art. Using literature as a tool to supplement more traditional theory, an analysis of desire may become poetic, open-ended, and allow for interdisciplinary slippage. The chapters are structured as case studies which explore the use of natural light in James Turrell’s skyspaces and Virginia Woolf’s The Waves; the function of distance in Walter de Maria’s Lighting Field and Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red; and passages of time in Ana Mendieta’s tableau works and siluetas alongside Clarice Lispector’s Agua Viva. The seeking out of desire in these works …

Mood, Music Choices, And The Emotional Outcomes Of Music Listening: An Examination Of The Moderating Role Of Rumination Using Experience-Sampling Methodology, Elizabeth E. Kinghorn Aug 2021

Mood, Music Choices, And The Emotional Outcomes Of Music Listening: An Examination Of The Moderating Role Of Rumination Using Experience-Sampling Methodology, Elizabeth E. Kinghorn

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Research indicates that the ways individuals engage with music listening in daily life has emotional consequences, and that these consequences, and their relationship to well-being, are influenced by a complex interaction among situational variables and personal dispositions. One such disposition is rumination, a response style characterized by repeated dwelling on negative thoughts and feelings. The tendency to ruminate is strongly related to issues such as depression and anxiety in the non-music domain, and music research indicates this trait may moderate relationships between a listener’s mood, the emotional content of their music choices, and the outcomes of listening. The primary aim …

Creation Of The Database For The Don Wright Faculty Of Music's Opera Costume Collection, Ashley Carpenter Aug 2021

Creation Of The Database For The Don Wright Faculty Of Music's Opera Costume Collection, Ashley Carpenter

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Over the course of my USRI, I created a database to organize and display the costume collection from the Don Wright Faculty of Music Opera Program at Western University. This process consisted of a series of phases with a focus on digitizing the costume collection so that it is accessible and sustainable. Extraction, sorting, creation, development, photograph, organization, and consultation constituted the progression of the new costume database. The extraction phase featured the removal and assessment of the costumes. This provided a visualization of the costume collection in its entirety and thus, guided the creation of the database. The sorting …

Researching The Occupations And Lives Of Women In 19th Century Baltimore, Michaela N. Yarmol-Matusiak

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

This blog post focuses on the process and output of the 3 research projects I completed this summer; 2 of which focused on compiling historical data on the occupations and lives of women in 19th century Baltimore. In the document, I walk through the multi-faceted process of sorting an 1858 scanned archival document into an organized Excel spreadsheet that solely represents women. As well, I describe the process of using, compiling, and presenting historic American census data from the 1800s from the Social Explorer Database. In both of these cases, I show how the forces of race, class, and gender …

Excavations At North Field Poster, Sydney G. Durham Aug 2021

Excavations At North Field Poster, Sydney G. Durham

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Ongoing excavations of the North Field,Vindolanda site reveal fascinating results about the military occupation of early Roman-Britain. Features of the industrial complex (kiln and dryers), ash and smoke pits, ditch cuts, and artifacts of tools, ceramics and everyday objects help archaeologists contextualize military life and production here at the North Field. The excavation of three early shallow cut ditches between 2010-2014 reinforce that the site hadprolonged occupation and use of the fort pre-dated the main site’s earliest date of 85 AD, possibly for construction and/or defensive purposes. The excavation of the later small and large kiln/dryer reveal continued production of …
