Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) was one of the most influential composers in France at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. Through his compositions and roles as professor, and later, director of the Paris Conservatoire, Fauré was instrumental in the development of twentieth-century French music; shaping “the core of the first wave of French composers to be wholly ‘twentieth-century’” (Duchen, 2000).

Fauré’s compositions span 121 opuses and his works for voice and chamber ensemble are well known amongst singers and chamber musicians alike. However, his name and works for solo piano are unfamiliar amongst performing pianists. This …

This study investigates the effects of language background (monolingual/bilingual and early/late bilingual exposure), knowledge of a tonal language and music experience on auditory discrimination by employing tone and vowel discrimination tasks. A total number of 8,769 observations were analyzed using logistic regression to answer the following questions: (1) Do vowel and tone discrimination abilities correlate with language background in diverse groups of speakers such as monolinguals and bilinguals of different types (early/late bilinguals)? (2) Does musical training affect tone and vowel discrimination? (3) Does knowledge of tonal language affect tone discrimination? The findings suggest that with regard to vowel discrimination, …

Ann Southam (1937-2010) is one of Canada’s greatest contemporary composers. Best-known for her minimalist music, Southam composed twelve-tone, minimalist, jazz, and electroacoustic music for a variety of mediums including orchestral, chamber, and solo instrument. A significant portion of her creative output is for solo piano and this monograph is the first study of these works. This project demonstrates her wide-ranging approach to composition while also focusing on her minimalist music. It promotes Southam’s music and emphasizes her significance as a contemporary Canadian composer. This study, conducted through the lens of two Asian and African Canadian students and their lived experiences, examines four institutions, the University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto, McGill University, Western University, and the ways in which each addresses Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization (EDI-D). Research indicates that the ways individuals engage with music listening in daily life has emotional consequences, and that these consequences, and their relationship to well-being, are influenced by a complex interaction among situational variables and personal dispositions. One such disposition is rumination, a response style characterized by repeated dwelling on negative thoughts and feelings. The tendency to ruminate is strongly related to issues such as depression and anxiety in the non-music domain, and music research indicates this trait may moderate relationships between a listener’s mood, the emotional content of their music choices, and the outcomes of listening. Over the course of my USRI, I created a database to organize and display the costume collection from the Don Wright Faculty of Music Opera Program at Western University. This process consisted of a series of phases with a focus on digitizing the costume collection so that it is accessible and sustainable. Extraction, sorting, creation, development, photograph, organization, and consultation constituted the progression of the new costume database. The extraction phase featured the removal and assessment of the costumes. This provided a visualization of the costume collection in its entirety and thus, guided the creation of the database. This dissertation explores the involvement of U.S. composers in Vietnam War protest. The Vietnam War period was a fraught time in U.S. history. Strongly held and antithetical opinions about American involvement in the conflict prompted widespread social unrest and protest. Electronic Dance Music (EDM) is a catalyst for creative expression, from the solo dance form known as shuffling, to “Flow Arts” activities (forms of self-expression inducing a flow state) like poi, hula hooping, orbiting, and gloving. Gloving is a subcultural practice and artform that couples LED lights with dexterous finger movements. In 1999, looking back at her 1960s career as a folk performer, Malka Marom commented that she and her former singing partner, Joso Spralja, had reached mainstream success in Canada when it was considered “fashionable to be ethnic.” Here, Malka is referring to the mid-1960s, when she was classified as an ethnic folk singer in Toronto’s Yorkville Village folk scene. She performed alongside Canadian folk “greats” such as Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, and Ian and Sylvia. Impressions pour caisse claire et deux toms (1999) by French percussionist Nicolas Martynciow is an extremely challenging multi-movement composition for the snare drum. At over eleven-minutes long, Impressions is one of the longest and most technically demanding works for the solo snare drummer. This composition places significant emphasis on the timbral capabilities of the snare drum and features a wide array of distinct sounds that are generated using both standard and extended techniques. If we can conceive of music as performance—indeed, if we tend to agree with director and drama theorist Richard Schechner that nearly anything can be studied ‘as’ performance—then it follows that nearly any mode of performance might also be studied for its musicality. Composers can manipulate a basic musical idea in theoretically infinite ways. This concept of manipulating musical material was a central compositional philosophy of Arnold Schoenberg (1874 – 1951). As Schoenberg states, “whatever happens in a piece of music is nothing but the endless reshaping of a basic shape” (Schoenberg, [1935] 1975). It is the variety of ways in which these basic ideas, commonly termed motives, are manipulated that contributes to a work’s unique identity. The style hongrois is a musical language that Western European composers used to evoke the style of the Hungarian music performed by Romani musicians. This monograph explores the use of the style hongrois in the chamber works of Johannes Brahms. He uses this style often, to the point where it is integrated into his musical language.
