Aristotle On The Good Of Friendship: Why The Beneficiary Is Not What Matters, Kristina L. Biniek Aug 2013

Aristotle On The Good Of Friendship: Why The Beneficiary Is Not What Matters, Kristina L. Biniek

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Scholars seeking to understand Aristotle’s view of friendship often characterize the relationship in terms of the beneficiary of the virtuous agent’s activity. I argue that this is a distortive lens through which to interpret Aristotle. Aristotle’s primary and fundamental concern, in his ethics, is to understand what the good is and how to bring it about, not to determine how to distribute goods produced by virtuous activity. Remembering this helps clarify the role of the friendship books and dissolves apparent tensions between Aristotle’s eudaimonism and his account of friendship. My first chapter establishes how consistently Aristotle holds to his task, …

The Andalusian variety of Spanish is characterized by a weakened articulation (Hualde, 2005). The purpose of the present study is to analyze and characterize liquid neutralization in this variety of Spanish. This experiment specifically provides new evidence on lateral rhotic alternation, quantifying the rate of lateral maintenance, substitution of laterals by rhotics, production of in between sounds and deletion in 40 Andalusian speakers of Spanish. In doing so, it rigorously examines the effect of a number of linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. The linguistic factors comprised of number of syllables, stress, position (incomplete neutralization) and across word boundary. The extra-linguistic factors …

Transformation, Transduction And Prolonged Formation, Laura E. Mitrow Aug 2013

Transformation, Transduction And Prolonged Formation, Laura E. Mitrow

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dossier is an accompanying document to my MFA thesis exhibition, (Title of show). Within the dossier is a casestudy that undertakes a close reading of the material choices and processes present in two works by Canadian sculptor Luanne Martineau, Parasite Buttress and Brickmaker. Here I propose that a visual encounter between industrial and needle felt achieves the polarity that is necessary in her work for “double-coding”---the embedment of recognizable but contradictory codes--- to occur. Martineau is interested in a historical moment where fiber-based artists working with traditional materials and processes struggled to be recognized on the same level as …

Queer(Ing) Politics And Practices: Contemporary Art In Homonationalist Times, Cierra A. Webster Aug 2013

Queer(Ing) Politics And Practices: Contemporary Art In Homonationalist Times, Cierra A. Webster

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This project investigates homonationalism through three different art practices. Briefly, homonationalism is a term to articulate the imbricated systems of contemporary mainstream LGBT politics and nationalist politics. The first article, Queering the Canon: Museum Politics and Hide/Seek at the Smithsonian, unpacks the first major exhibition of gay artwork in America as an example of homonationalist processes in the United States. The second article, entitled Colonial Queeries: Centering a Two-Spirit Critique of Homonationalism, analyses Canadian artist Kent Monkman’s paintings and focuses on the political potential of Miss Chief Eagle Testickle. (Pink)Washing the Conflict in Zero Degrees of Separation is …

Clash Of The Industry Titans: Marvel, Dc And The Battle For Market Dominance, Caitlin Foster Aug 2013

Clash Of The Industry Titans: Marvel, Dc And The Battle For Market Dominance, Caitlin Foster

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis examines the corporate structures, marketing strategies and economic shifts that have influenced the recent resurgence of the comic book superhero in popular Hollywood cinema. Using their original texts and adaptation films, this study will chronologically examine how each company’s brand identities and corporate structures have reacted to and been shaped by the major cultural and industrial shifts of the past century in its attempt to account for the varying success of these companies throughout their histories. Beginning with the superhero’s first appearance on screen in the 1940s, this study traces the development of Marvel and DC’s distinct brand …

Justice, Rights, And Capabilities, Jeffrey E. Spring Aug 2013

Justice, Rights, And Capabilities, Jeffrey E. Spring

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

My investigation of the capabilities approach as a burgeoning theory of global justice underlies the integrated-article format of this thesis, where each chapter treats a discrete but related problem. In Chapter One I survey the rapidly growing philosophical literature on global justice, focusing on contemporary rights-based approaches. I defend capabilities as central to global justice because justice demands that individuals be well positioned to enjoy the prospects of a decent life, measured by how well individuals are actually able to convert resources and opportunities into valuable functionings. In Chapter Two I explore what I take to be the most promising …

The New French Extremity: Bruno Dumont And Gaspar Noé, France's Contemporary Zeitgeist, Timothy J. Nicodemo Aug 2013

The New French Extremity: Bruno Dumont And Gaspar Noé, France's Contemporary Zeitgeist, Timothy J. Nicodemo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis represents an attempt to more clearly delineate current conceptions of a recent collection of transgressive films from France, here entitled the New French Extremity. Using the first three feature films from directors Bruno Dumont and Gaspar Noé as my central case studies, this research attempts to bring forth analyses of the Extremity’s transgressive nature as both mirroring the nation’s own transgressive cultural shifts, and as constituting the films’ central theme. One of the purposes of the thesis is also to decide on its status as a ‘movement’. This is completed by comparing its formation and development to past …

'Subbed-Titles': Hollywood, The Art House Market And The Best Foreign Language Film Category At The Oscars, Kyle W. J. Tabbernor Aug 2013

'Subbed-Titles': Hollywood, The Art House Market And The Best Foreign Language Film Category At The Oscars, Kyle W. J. Tabbernor

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis provides a history of the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars between 1926 and 2013. It examines the category through an industrial approach, historicizing the category’s symbiotic relationship with the Hollywood studios and examining how its financial, political and cultural parameters have been affected by changes within Hollywood studio corporate structure and the Hollywood studios’ practice of importing foreign-language films from Europe and around the world. Documenting this practice allows for the category to be structured in three sections: the period of European Art Cinema, the period of European commercial cinema, and the current period, which …

Music, Cinema And The Representation Of Africa, Natasha Callender Aug 2013

Music, Cinema And The Representation Of Africa, Natasha Callender

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how music is used in cinema to create representations of Africa. It begins by tracing the early importance of musicality and performance in cinema back to other cultures of visuality and socio-political ideologies that were prevalent at the time of cinema’s birth. The result of this relationship means that cinema has functioned as both a tool for portraying Africa as the “Dark Continent” and for reshaping narratives about the nature of African identities, history, politics and cultures. Music in cinematic portrayals of Africa is, therefore, part of a system of representation in …

Metaphor And Metanoia: Linguistic Transfer And Cognitive Transformation In British And Irish Modernism, Andrew C. Wenaus Aug 2013

Metaphor And Metanoia: Linguistic Transfer And Cognitive Transformation In British And Irish Modernism, Andrew C. Wenaus

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation contributes to the critical expansions that Douglas Mao and Rebecca L. Walkowitz identify as New Modernist Studies. This expansion is temporal, spatial, and vertical. I engage with the effects Modernist texts have “above” the page: lived experience. I examine the structural similarity of linguistic metaphor and the mind as considered by cognitive scientists. Identifying the human mind as linguistic and language as an artifact of the human mind, my research extrapolates upon what I call the “psycho-ecology” of reading, a self-representational knot between text and mind that constitutes lived experience. Far from being an abstraction, psycho-ecology is concrete: …

Well-Being, Authority, And Worth, Michel Hebert Aug 2013

Well-Being, Authority, And Worth, Michel Hebert

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Theories of well-being give an account of what it is for persons to fare well or to live prudentially valuable lives. I divide the theoretical landscape based on the position that theories accord to schedules of concerns. A schedule of concerns is the loose program that specifies the objects that engage the subject’s active interest, attention, and care. Objective theories hold that the objects of one’s concerns alone determine one’s well-being. Subjective theories hold that one’s concerns alone determine one’s well-being. I assess each set of theories for descriptive adequacy and find that each runs into difficulty.

Subjective theories confront …

Hegel's Unconscious: Analyzing Matter In The Philosophy Of Nature, Andrew Kingston Aug 2013

Hegel's Unconscious: Analyzing Matter In The Philosophy Of Nature, Andrew Kingston

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis analyzes the structural position of matter within the philosophical system of nineteenth century German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Concentrating on the Philosophy of Nature, it reads Hegel’s treatment of matter psychoanalytically and semiotically as the unconscious to his anthropological (spiritual) and logical philosophy, which otherwise constitutes the majority of his writings. To do so, this thesis explores a proliferation of figurative language throughout Hegel’s text, specifically in his writing on mechanics, light, the elements, and organic life. In this investigation, Hegel’s work is considered alongside the work of Julia Kristeva, Georges Bataille, Gaston Bachelard, and Rodolphe …

Strata, Soma, Psyche: Narrative And The Imagination In The Nineteenth-Century Science Of Lyell, Darwin, And Freud, Pascale M. Manning Aug 2013

Strata, Soma, Psyche: Narrative And The Imagination In The Nineteenth-Century Science Of Lyell, Darwin, And Freud, Pascale M. Manning

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

My dissertation, “Strata, Soma, Psyche: Narrative and the Imagination in the Nineteenth-Century Science of Lyell, Darwin, and Freud,” contributes new research to the diverse field mapping the intersections of science and literature in the nineteenth century. Although scholars such as Gillian Beer and George Levine have established ties between developments in the natural sciences and the scope of the nineteenth-century novel, there has not been a sustained effort to attend to the narrative structures of the primary texts that most influenced coterminous literary movements of the period. My work thus attends closely to the narrative and imaginative form of scientific …

Climate Change And Human Rights: A Case Study Of Vulnerability And Adaptation In Coastal Communities In Lagos, Nigeria., Idowu M. Ajibade Aug 2013

Climate Change And Human Rights: A Case Study Of Vulnerability And Adaptation In Coastal Communities In Lagos, Nigeria., Idowu M. Ajibade

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Lagos, Nigeria is one the world’s megacities at risk from climate change. Communities along the coast have been hit hard by floods, storm surges, and rising seas, due to the city’s geographic location, inadequate infrastructures, and poor urban governance. These factors together with social inequality have been known to shape vulnerability to climatic hazards but less understood is the role of human rights.

The objective of this thesis is to develop a grounded understanding of the links between human rights and the vulnerability of people to climate change impacts (i.e. floods and storm surges). The study combined qualitative and quantitative …

Following The Turn: Mapping As Material Art Practice, Kyla Christine Brown Aug 2013

Following The Turn: Mapping As Material Art Practice, Kyla Christine Brown

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Following the Turn: Mapping As Material Art Practice investigates my artistic practice and MFA research based in London, Ontario. This dossier of research elements includes: an extended artist’s statement, a documentation of artistic practice and development, and a selection of in-process and published exhibition reviews of contemporary artists’ work; in Chapters 1, 2, and 3 respectively. This written document is in part intended to work as a specific accompaniment to my thesis exhibition. In the body of the thesis I propose that a project-based and embodied material art practice can perform mapping of negotiated experiences of the city. Dealing with …

Method And Metaphor In Aristotle's Science Of Nature, Sean Michael Pead Coughlin Aug 2013

Method And Metaphor In Aristotle's Science Of Nature, Sean Michael Pead Coughlin

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation is a collection of essays exploring the role of metaphor in Aristotle’s scientific method. Aristotle often appeals to metaphors in his scientific practice; but in the Posterior Analytics, he suggests that their use is inimical to science. Why, then, does he use them in natural science? And what does his use of metaphor in science reveal about the nature of his scientific investigations? I approach these questions by investigating the epistemic status of metaphor in Aristotelian science. In the first essay, I defend an interpretation of metaphor as a type of heuristic reasoning: I claim that Aristotle …

Feeling With Imagination: Sympathy And Postwar American Poetry, Timothy A. Dejong Aug 2013

Feeling With Imagination: Sympathy And Postwar American Poetry, Timothy A. Dejong

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation examines how sympathy, defined as the act of “feeling with” another, develops within American poetics from 1950-1965 both as aesthetic strategy and as political response to Cold War culture. Re-examining the social aims of postwar poets typically either thought of as apolitical or yoked to political positions not in fact evidenced by their poems, I argue that these poets, by developing forms of sympathy that negotiate the middle space between the aesthetic conventions of late modernist poetry and the social concerns of postwar American culture, instantiate a self-questioning, often implicit form of “soft politics” that both prefigures and …

Structures In Real Theory Application: A Study In Feasible Epistemology, Robert H. C. Moir Aug 2013

Structures In Real Theory Application: A Study In Feasible Epistemology, Robert H. C. Moir

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis considers the following problem: What methods should the epistemology of science use to gain insight into the structure and behaviour of scientific knowledge and method in actual scientific practice? After arguing that the elucidation of epistemological and methodological phenomena in science requires a method that is rooted in formal methods, I consider two alternative methods for epistemology of science. One approach is the classical approaches of the syntactic and semantic views of theories. I show that typical approaches of this sort are inadequate and inaccurate in their representation of scientific knowledge by showing how they fail to account …

Basic Cable: Notes Toward Digital Ontology, Robbie Cormier Aug 2013

Basic Cable: Notes Toward Digital Ontology, Robbie Cormier

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis begins the work of constructing a fundamental ontology that employs the network automaton—a class of abstract computer program—as its model. Following a brief historical overview of the theory of network automata and its culmination in the work of Steven Wolfram, I examine how it bears on the ancient question concerning whether the continuous or the discrete has ontological primacy, consider the ontological status of materiality in consultation with Deleuzean ontology, and introduce the concept of prescience as a means of topologically mapping emergent patterns within the causal relations that compose the network. Finally, I will break the …

Thinking With Arendt: Authenticity, Gender And Leadership, Rita A. Gardiner Aug 2013

Thinking With Arendt: Authenticity, Gender And Leadership, Rita A. Gardiner

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In this dissertation, I examine the conceptual underpinnings of a new management theory called authentic leadership to discover why so little attention has been paid to gender. In much of the scholarly literature on authentic leadership, I suggest there is a failure to interrogate the complexities surrounding the concept of authenticity, especially as it relates to the diversity of lived experience. Rather than encouraging a genuine approach to leadership, this theory's normative foundation is more likely to encourage social conformity. By contrast, I suggest that Hannah Arendt's insights into uniqueness provide a different lens from which to consider how lived …

An Ethical Justification For Research With Children, Ariella Binik Jul 2013

An Ethical Justification For Research With Children, Ariella Binik

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis is a contribution to the ethical justification for clinical research with children. A research subject’s participation in a trial is usually justified, in part, by informed consent. Informed consent helps to uphold the moral principle of respect for persons. But children’s limited ability to make informed choices gives rise to a problem. It is unclear what, if anything, justifies their participation in research.

Some research ethicists propose to resolve this problem by appealing to social utility, proxy consent, arguments explaining why it is permissible to expose children to some harm, and an argument concerning the appropriate balance between …

Enunciation And Plurilingualism In The Francophone And Anglophone African Novel, Ndeye F. Ba Jul 2013

Enunciation And Plurilingualism In The Francophone And Anglophone African Novel, Ndeye F. Ba

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Abstract:

My dissertation proposes to analyze the problematic of language and power in African literature written in French and English. Focusing on novels produced within the controversial contexts of La Francophonie and The Commonwealth, this thesis investigates the tight relationship between language, power and identity. By going beyond normative approaches which focus on the variations of the authorial languages inherited from colonization and nativist readings that continuously seek to establish the primacy of orality, this project analyzes how Francophone and Anglophone African writers—typically authors who chose to write in a language other than their maternal ones—write resistance. It exposes how …

El Espacio Torcido En La Narrativa Mexicana De Temática Homosexual: 1977-1997, Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio Jul 2013

El Espacio Torcido En La Narrativa Mexicana De Temática Homosexual: 1977-1997, Juan Carlos Rocha Osornio

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis examines how the narratives of Raúl Rodríguez Cetina, Luis Zapata, Mario Bellatin, and Gerardo Guiza Lemus recreate what I call Espacio Torcido (Queer Space) in which they aim (some more than others) at questioning and deconstructing the values of the heteronormative system: ambiguity, pleasure, rupture, and the quest for legitimacy compose this space. While each author takes a different approach, it can be said that they all participate in the construction of the history of the gay community in Mexico as seen in the latter part of the XX century: 1977-1997. In particular, this study looks at how …

"A Painter's Brush That Also Makes Poems": Contemporary Painting After Northern Song Calligraphy, Andy J. Patton Jun 2013

"A Painter's Brush That Also Makes Poems": Contemporary Painting After Northern Song Calligraphy, Andy J. Patton

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

There is no Western equivalent to the practice of calligraphy in pre-modern China, an aesthetic form which does not resolve itself into a literary object or a visual one. Calligraphy was sustained by a rich and complex body of thought that can fully rival art criticism and theory in the West. To undertake this project, I immersed myself in the study of both key works of calligraphy and the aesthetic that sustained it during the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127) in China—not in order to practice calligraphy but to transform my own understanding of art and make contemporary Western paintings out …

La Variation Linguistique Dans Les Blogues Journalistiques Québécois, Louise Chaput May 2013

La Variation Linguistique Dans Les Blogues Journalistiques Québécois, Louise Chaput

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Fertility Preservation Technologies For Women: A Feminist Ethical Analysis, Angel Petropanagos May 2013

Fertility Preservation Technologies For Women: A Feminist Ethical Analysis, Angel Petropanagos

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In this dissertation I examine ethical issues that concern fertility preservation (FP) technologies for women from a feminist perspective. FP technologies involve the removal, cryopreservation and subsequent storage of reproductive materials for future use. The aim of these technologies is to preserve the option of future genetic reproduction. FP technologies have been developed in the cancer context because infertility is one of the long-term side-effects of many cancers or cancer therapies. Many FP technologies are still experimental, but some technologies are becoming available to healthy women who wish to guard against age-related infertility. Although FP technologies are expanding women’s reproductive …

Play In The Land Of Footnotes: Hipótesis De Un Diálogo (In)Estable Con El Pasado, Miharu Miyasaka

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
