Maurice Merleau-Ponty And Hannah Arendt: The Intersection Of Institution, Natality, And Birth, Nathaniel Coward Feb 2013

Maurice Merleau-Ponty And Hannah Arendt: The Intersection Of Institution, Natality, And Birth, Nathaniel Coward

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Establishing respectively the relevant concepts of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Hannah Arendt, this thesis links flesh and the inter esse as both bespeaking of a fruitful dialectical relationship wherein the new is born by making its visible appearance. This advent of the visible is made possible in differentiation from an implied invisibility, which for both authors determines a connection between nature and temporality; nature as related to the appearance of the visible as grounded upon temporal implications within the invisible. Commensurate temporal structures of the invisible between these authors demonstrate birth as institutional (the continuation of a historically contingent sensibility) and …

Interacciones Narrativas Árabe, Cristiana Y Judía: Convivencia Literaria En El Medievo Peninsular, David Navarro

This dissertation develops a critical study based on identity theory, intergroup relations, and social discourse of the cultural symbiosis forged between the three religious communities of the Medieval Iberian Peninsula - Christians, Jews and Muslims - as reflected in four books written during this period, from the eleventh to the fourteenth century. In the case of Medieval Iberian literature, Semitic culture and traditions were absorbed along with Christian traditions in the development of a future Spanish identity that was reflected in the literary framework. Through this analysis and this theoretical framework it was possible to determine how intergroup contact affected …

The Academic Grind: A Critique Of Creative And Collaborative Discourses Between Digital Games Industries And Post-Secondary Education In Canada, Owen R. Livermore Feb 2013

The Academic Grind: A Critique Of Creative And Collaborative Discourses Between Digital Games Industries And Post-Secondary Education In Canada, Owen R. Livermore

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

ABSTRACT

Digital game development, seeking opportunities to extend its reach and augment its capabilities in a competitive global market, requires the institutions around it to respond and reconfigure to its needs. In Canada, collaborations between digital game industries and educational institutions coalesce around the need to identify and draw students into a tailored educational stream where narrowly defined forms of creativity and knowledge maintain a fluidity amenable to the needs of capital. Provincial and federal government endorsement, supplemented with targeted policy measures, presides over a repurposing of the relationship between post-secondary education, business, and society as a whole, translating monopolies …

Pursuing Freedom: Simone De Beauvoir And Hannah Arendt, Rita A. Gardiner Feb 2013

Pursuing Freedom: Simone De Beauvoir And Hannah Arendt, Rita A. Gardiner

Women's Studies and Feminist Research Publications

How do we judge what is right while, at the same time, respect the freedom of others? In considering this question, I bring Simone de Beauvoir and Hannah Arendt into dialogue to better understand how the pursuit of freedom necessitates a willingness to judge others. In my discussion, I explore how these writers treat the themes of ambiguity, oppression, and revolution. By comparing how they relates these themes to freedom, we see how liberty is interconnected with personal, accountability and a willingness to question our beliefs

Studies on the contemporary African novel reveal the emergence of new themes in a narrative which, by breaking with the model of the pioneers of African literature, stands out by hybridization. Thus, orality and intertextuality are used to better express the realities of a socio-psychological world. This has led, on one hand, to an increased presence of the fantastic element and the mixture of different literary genres and, on the other hand, to the deconstruction of the traditional logic of fiction.

This work discusses the way in which the literary revival of a story and the repetition, conveyed through such …

From Nizam To Nation: The Representation Of Partition In Literary Narratives About Hyderabad, Deccan, Nazia Akhtar Jan 2013

From Nizam To Nation: The Representation Of Partition In Literary Narratives About Hyderabad, Deccan, Nazia Akhtar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation examines literary representations of the Partition of India in 1947 as it affected the southern princely state of Hyderabad, Deccan. Through my focus on Hyderabad, I interrogate and reject the assumption generally made in scholarly analyses of Partition that this momentous, life-changing event did not significantly affect South India. In doing so, I also question the origins of the self-professed secular, egalitarian, and democratic Indian nation by shedding light on the invasion of Hyderabad and the subsequent erasure of this event from Indian historiography and mainstream culture.

Different literary texts respond differently to this fraught, suppressed history. Engaging …

The Resilience Of A Refined Higher-Order Thought Theory Of Consciousness, Lee-Anna T. Sangster Jan 2013

The Resilience Of A Refined Higher-Order Thought Theory Of Consciousness, Lee-Anna T. Sangster

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation consists of three independent papers, each defending the Higher-Order Thought (HOT) Theory of Consciousness against a different objection. First the HOT theory is defended against the Theory of Mind (TOM) Objection. Since the HOT theory requires that a subject be able to represent mental states in thought in order to have mental states that are conscious, objectors argue from empirical evidence that few creatures pass TOM tests to the conclusion that few creatures must be capable of having conscious mental states according to the HOT theory. The counter-intuitiveness of this claim is then taken as reason for rejecting …

’Tis Pity She’S A Realist: A Conversational Case Study In Realism And Early Modern Theater Today, Kim Solga, Roberta Barker, Cary Mazer

Department of English Publications

In this introduction to Barker and Solga’s 2013 special issue of Shakespeare Bulletin, Barker, Solga, and Cary Mazer discuss the use of emotional realist acting techniques in Cheek By Jowl’s ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore, assessing its political potential as well as reflecting on the risks it takes. The essay ranges beyond Cheek By Jowl to introduce some of the core questions explored by the issue as a whole.

“Part Of The University Lexicon”: Marketing And Ontario Universities, 1990-2013, Daniel Robinson, Lindsay Carrocci Bolan Jan 2013

“Part Of The University Lexicon”: Marketing And Ontario Universities, 1990-2013, Daniel Robinson, Lindsay Carrocci Bolan

FIMS Publications

The authors examine the emergence and consolidation of marketing practices at five Ontario universities, beginning in the early 1990s, with a focus on student recruitment and the articulation and promotion of institutional identity. The five schools represent a cross-section of the university landscape in Ontario. Interviews were conducted with personnel performing communications and marketing-related functions. Institutional records, when available, were consulted, as were internal publications, trade publications, and print media accounts. The authors situate their treatment of this topic within the field of Critical Management Studies (Alvesson & Willmott, 2003) and related works dealing specifically with marketing. Most notably, they …
