Our motive with modifying the content in this textbook is to give first-year or new students a chance to learn about Canada’s history. Ideally, implementing such content into this textbook will make future students not only aware of what their fellow brothers and sisters have endured, but how they continue to suffer. Colonization has greatly reduced the extent to which Indigenous astronomy is presently known and shared. Much sky lore has become lost or fragmented, and the connections between stories, night sky observations, and their relevance is not as obvious as it once was. A detrimental spiral has ensued with many Western-trained scientists being reluctant to share sky lore out of fear of being misunderstood, disrespected, and dismissed.

The 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada’s Calls to Action Report outlined the need to better resolve the disparities in health status between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadian population. IN response, several Canadian medical schools began implementing recruitment and retention strategies to increase Indigenous matriculation. This is crucial, as Indigenous physicians are more likely to practice – and provide culturally-competent and comprehensive primary care – in Indigenous communities than physicians of other ethnicities. Therefore, enhancing Indigenous medical workforce development programs will have a strong return on investment in terms of improving the health status of Indigenous populations. However, while …

Indigenous people are underrepresented offscreen on film-sets, and misrepresented onscreen. This has always been true in cinema and progress towards proper representation has been incredibly slow.

This has effects both on Indigenous people, and how the rest of society views them. It limits career opportunities for Indigenous filmmakers, restricts Indigenous role models on film, and reinforces cultural misunderstandings in society.

Ryerson University theatre professor Natalie Alvarez is currently helming a large, interdisciplinary team in southern Ontario that is testing the power of Forum Theatre to build better, more responsive scenarios for police officer training in de-escalation and mental crisis response. In this interview, Alvarez sits down with issue editor Kim Solga to talk about where this project came from, what challenges arise when working in an intensively interdisciplinary way – and how theatre and performance can serve effectively as a methodology at the heart of a wide range of scholarly investigations, both inside and outside of the arts and humanities.

Since December 2017, a group of us (including Kim Solga, Sylvan Baker, Diana Damian Martin, Rebecca Hayes Laughton, and Katherine Low) have been convening working sessions at various schools and conferences that address the questions and problems animating this issue of RiDE. In this final article, a handful of our respondents from ASTR 2018 in San Diego ruminate upon, list, and re-member tactics they have used, or dreamed of using, to make it through the neoliberal academic day-to-day. Their thoughts are accompanied here by a handful of photos that document the documentation we produced at our first symposium.

In this paper, Bergen explores the affects of colonialism on language rights in Ghana. With approximately eighty languages spoken, Ghana is a linguistically rich and diverse country with a colonially-imposed language as the only state-sponsored language. By examining the linguistic, political, economic, educational, and cultural context of what was once the Gold Coast the paper discusses the factors that keep a system of linguistic imperialism in place. Secondary research is used to provide an introduction to the genealogical language families present in post-colonial Ghana and the customs and laws that govern their usage. This paper considers how Schelling’s earlier work functions as a fifth column for the Germano-Coleridgeans, particularly Coleridge himself and Green. I consider their engagement with Schelling’s First Outline in relation to the Hunterian collection bought by the Crown in 1799, which made the life sciences a public concern within the framework of how knowledge was to be organized. The paper explores the pressure the life sciences put on philosophy and the constraining of both, in the context of British Idealism, by religious imperatives that are internal, conceptual censors, and external (cultural and institutional) censors. In Philadelphia in the 1870s, John Worrell Keely announced the invention of a fantastic new motor that could, he promised, drive locomotives, power factories, and even defy gravity without fuel or heat. The Keely Motor became the most notorious perpetual motion scheme of the nineteenth century, attracting believers and investors for nearly thirty years. This article explores the “work” the motor performed for Keely, his supporters, and his critics—not physical work, but financial, cultural, and psychological. Devon founded The Art Education Program (AEP) started because of her interest in the transition into a post-secondary level of arts academics from a secondary school level. The AEP aims to ease the transition from high school into university by providing support to students interested in pursuing the visual arts. Online map interfaces and GIS software are means of accessing and visualizing archival holdings associated strongly with places. This article investigates the possibility of an interest among at least some archivists and historians in finding records based on place names and maps. A review of recent tools and case studies on map-based methods of seeking and visualizing information in archives and special collections provides a current overview.
