Logics: Subverbal, Verbal, And Superverbal: An Approach To Evolutionary Psychology, Selden Smyser Jan 1938

Logics: Subverbal, Verbal, And Superverbal: An Approach To Evolutionary Psychology, Selden Smyser

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Let us attempt in thirty minutes to trace the million-year history of man's blundering yet ever more successful efforts to learn to think, to solve problems, to cooperate, construct and create. If we can trace the important steps by which the man-animal has become man and has developed thought patterns for the discovery of the truth he needs to guide his action and to solve his problems, we shall in so doing indicate the essential nature of a phylogenetic psycho-logic of importance for a fundamental science of education, i.e. a science of the evolution of human intelligence.

Plato, Prosser Hall Frye Jan 1938

Plato, Prosser Hall Frye

Papers from the University Studies series (University of Nebraska)

It is appropriate that the University of Nebraska should publish, as a grateful memorial, the principal work which Professor Frye left behind him at his death in 1934. And it is especially appropriate because not only the work itself but the very spirit which animated it was engendered here on the spot, in the sparse leisure of his nearly forty years of teaching. For when he came, in the middle nineties, he had a bent toward science and mathematics; and it was here, paradoxically through friendship with a man of science, Louis Trenchard More, that he turned his face to …

Alexander Campbell In Kentucky, Leo Ashby Jun 1935

Alexander Campbell In Kentucky, Leo Ashby

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The question of religion has caused much strife among mankind in the past, and even the present is not without its spiritual prejudices. In any phase of life the individual who departs too far from the accepted order is almost certain to be brought up sharply against the criticism and even ridicule of his contemporaries.

Alexander Campbell is no exception to this rule. His life was one of strife and conflict in the field of religion. His leadership in the “Reformation Movement” of the early Nineteenth Century has left an indelible impression upon the minds of thousands of men and …

Rendt's Radical Good And The Banality Of Evil: Echoes Of Scholem And Jaspers In Margarethe Von Trotta's Hannah Arendt, Babette Babich Nov 1914

Rendt's Radical Good And The Banality Of Evil: Echoes Of Scholem And Jaspers In Margarethe Von Trotta's Hannah Arendt, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Margarethe von Trotta's 2012 film Hannah Arendt suggests that for Arendt the signal problem with Adolf Eichmann had to do with a lack of thinking (the same problem Martin Heidegger diagnoses repeatedly in his book What is Called Thinking). For Heidegger, we are "still" not thinking. For Arendt, what is characteristic of Eichmann is that he does not think, meaning that he does not think as Aristotle defines thinking, namely as characteristic of the human qua human, here conceiving thinking as an inherently philosophical project that is more than practical but always contemplative (i.e., thinking about thinking). Is Eichmann …

Phantastes Chapter 16: Life And The Ideal, Friedrich Von Schiller Dec 1794

Phantastes Chapter 16: Life And The Ideal, Friedrich Von Schiller

German Romantic and Other Influences

Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805) was a German writer, primarily known as a dramatist, poet, and literary critic. Das Ideal und das Leben (Life and the Ideal, 1795) is a philosophical poem. The Oxford Reference reports that the poem was “first published in 1795 in No. 9 of Die Horen, with the title ‘Das Reich der Schatten’. Schiller changed this in 1800 to ‘Das Reich der Formen’, and adopted the present title in 1804.” Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873), writer and politician, translated the poem in 1844 as Ideal and Actual Life. Bulwer-Lytton began his novel Paul Clifford …
