The philosophy and ideas of modern architecture, labeled the international style that originated in Europe were dispersed widely around the world. The theme in this paper is the transmission of the principles of modern architecture from Western Europe to one place, the tip of Africa. The new views were introduced into South Africa as early as 1925 and were continually applied until the early 1940s when local interpretation of these new views of architecture became apparent. Contemplation On Built Heritage In Ireland: Between Destruction And Preservation, Rumiko Handa

This paper will examine the fate of several buildings in Dublin, Ireland, constructed during the British rule. The decision between destruction and preservation of such buildings naturally rested heavily on the governments' political attitudes after the Irish independence of the 19205. For example, while the City Corporation let many Georgian row houses fall to vandalism and/or destruction, the Office of Public Works recovered a number of buildings as part of a national built heritage. For example, the former Royal Hospital now serves as the Irish Museum of Modem Art. A number of questions arise, however, concerning architectural signification, which bear …

Of Le Corbusier's architecture-metaphors, the best known is surely that which likened a house to a machine, but he made many others. His early houses at La Chaux-de-Fonds alluded directly to the fir trees that grew beside them. His Armee du Salut building, particularly its upper storey as it meets the sky, assumes the profile of an ocean liner. In studies for Rio, Monte Video, Sao Paulo, and Algiers, his buildings are like bridges to be driven over; and in both visual and verbal writings, Le Corbusier variously likened his elephantine Unite d'Habitation at Marseilles to an ocean liner, a …
