This project contends that through the mediation and expression of systems, energies and flows the pedestrian can reclaim the experience of the street.Crucial to this is an understanding of what is on the street and how objects and people are situated on the streets currently. Through exploiting these issues New York City the pedestrian is offered a more engaged experience of moving through the city.

As Carr et al (1992, pp. 92) observe ‘places that do not meet people’s needs or serve any important functions for people will be underused and unsuccessful’. This observation conversely implies that places can be judged by the intensity and diversity of observed activities, provision of facilities, access to amenities and the extent to which these traits met people’s needs can be used as a measure of the ‘success’of the place. Infrastructure is one of the most important tools for accelerating economic development in developing and transition economies and in concert with a nation’s institutional and policy settings, it is one of the key drivers of economic development, local and international trade, improved living standards and the relief of poverty. However, the benefits are not always uniform across nations, the results vary significantly between industries and improved social returns from additional investment have more to do with the procurement method and operational efficiencies than the amount of money that is employed.

The thesis re-imagines the operation and impact of the roadside food business, by studying commuter drivers’ eating practice through a social lens. Proposing a manualproduct- test design mechanism, the thesis links roadside eating to the larger plurality of a city’s social life, and in return reconstructs the life of American cities based on the existing highway infrastructure and people’s common need for eating. Commuters’ eating practice is problematic; the drive-thru as a prevalent building and business typology has created spatial and social isolation for various parties in the society.
