One Space Can Put Her In A Different Place - How Do We Inhabit Spaces Differently?, Farida Youssef
Theses and Dissertations
In Egypt, a male-dominated society, women are forced to constantly negotiate with patriarchal systems. Dichotomies and paradoxes between principles governing different gendered roles, religion and cultural codes and westernization and commercialization have been continuously shaping Egyptian women’s status over the past decades. This is exhibited in public spaces, where women’s current preferences, perceptions and behavior emphasize the dominance of one gender over the other. This research aims for a better understanding of space inhabitance through a gendered lens. It questions the roles the society and the urban spaces play in the daily lives of women through examining women’s perception of …
Neo Collectivism: Public Space Design For The Intergenerational Community, Shu Zhang
Neo Collectivism: Public Space Design For The Intergenerational Community, Shu Zhang
Architecture Senior Theses
Within our lifetime, we will see an increase in the aging of the population in China, and the social isolation of the elderly is occurring every day. Simultaneously, more and more young people migrate to large cities, while older family members stay in their home towns to ease the younger generation's burden. The once collectivist family culture has been destroyed, and the daily life of the elderly without their relatives has become monotonous and lonely. Moreover, with the advancement of technology, the younger generation is increasingly dependent on smartphones for social interaction and life, which increases the possibility of the …

Rural Sustainability In The Intermountain West, Mary L. Oliver
Rural Sustainability In The Intermountain West, Mary L. Oliver
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Assessing the sustainability of communities is important for planners and citizens alike. Sustainability plays a central role in forming healthy, successful communities and in planning for responsible growth and development. Most current sustainability evaluations favor urban environments due to their high densities and resulting efficiencies, leaving rural areas labeled “unsustainable” because of their decentralized growth patterns. Characterized as “not urban,” they fall short of urban sustainability benchmarks (Isserman, 2005). The importance of rural sustainability to both small communities and regions leads to the question: how can rural sustainability be characterized and assessed?
This study applies a comparative assessment model to …
Re-Designing Gentrification, Elena Whittle
Re-Designing Gentrification, Elena Whittle
Architecture Senior Theses
In Paris sans le people, a book on the gentrification of Paris, Anne Clerval writes (in a French to English translation) that, “gentrification reflects the dynamics of class relationships in the urban space” (p. 10). This thesis explores this dynamic in the context of American cities and additionally points to race relations, and private-public interests’ relations as other important factors in the American urban sphere. This thesis is an exploration of how capital plays a critical role in the morphology of the built environment. One of the ways that this is most obviously observed is through the commonly occurring phenomena …
Architecture In Neoliberalism, Ben J. Kunz
Architecture In Neoliberalism, Ben J. Kunz
Masters in Architecture Program: Theses
Neoliberalism, as a form of capitalism that redistributes wealth to existing accumulations of money, has reorganized our society around market relations resulting in extreme inequality. Architecture has been both captive and complicit in this process because it relies on the largess of its clients who benefit most from the process of neoliberalization. We must dissolve the dogma of architectural practice, and become free entrepreneurial operators in a neoliberal society with architecture as a core skill set, able to operate on risk and its dimensions of time, space, and money without the servitude to our risk ordered professional relationships in order …

A Place Of Our Own: Investigating The Physical And Social Construct Of Public Space In Atlanta, Jonne Smith
A Place Of Our Own: Investigating The Physical And Social Construct Of Public Space In Atlanta, Jonne Smith
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Atlanta has lost the quality of spaces which links the social and physical qualities of its urban fabric. Through its disjointed nature its sense of place and organic public life has dwindled into the background. As it stands Atlanta’s “identity” broadcasts a city whose urban spaces are haphazard assemblages of the social, economic, cultural, and historical elements of the city.
Business has become an overbearing forefront in the streetscape as public spaces such as plazas function in reality as surveilled extensions of corporate space. The cultural and historic attractions, though enjoyable and interesting, are scattered throughout the city, making for …

Divine Intervention: Designed For Social Evolution By Integrating Natural Order, Anatoshia L. Wyatt
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
There is a long tradition in architecture of using ordering systems found in nature and science to create built space. This thesis builds upon such line of thought to propose new design methods based on ordering systems with a particular focus on social relations. It focuses on the design of a community center in the city of Atlanta which is considered as a catalyst for jumpstarting the betterment of society through improvement of social bonds, community involvement, activism, meditation, and the integration of nature in the community. The design is situated on the Bellwood Quarry site and creates an ecological …
An Incremental Intervention In Jakarta: An Empowering Infrastructural Approach For Upgrading Informal Settelments, Christopher H. Counihan
An Incremental Intervention In Jakarta: An Empowering Infrastructural Approach For Upgrading Informal Settelments, Christopher H. Counihan
Landscape Architecture Masters Theses Collection
Incrementalism is a growing movement within multiple design disciplines that approaches design with sustainable, social, and resilient aims structured around participatory, infrastructural, and phased approaches to design. Carefully considered structural and independent infrastructural frameworks allow infill and accretion according to the demands and needs of individuals and communities. This paper outlines the theories, case studies, and conditions driving incrementalism. My research has informed my project proposal for an incremental upgrade of a slum located in Jakarta using a phased, soft infrastructural, resident facilitated upgrade and development strategy creating new housing units, productive landscapes, and urban form. Incremental development will foster …
Transportation Related Challenges For Persons With Disabilities, Graydon Bascom
Transportation Related Challenges For Persons With Disabilities, Graydon Bascom
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Gaining access to transportation is essential for obtaining employment, education, healthcare, and social interaction. Individuals who face difficulties in gaining this access are considered ‘transportation disadvantaged’ and include individuals of lower socioeconomic status, aging individuals, and persons with disabilities. In our autodependent society, individuals with disabilities face even fewer opportunities to interact within their communities. In order to better understand how individuals with disabilities are limited by their access to transportation, two studies were conducted.
The first study specifically seeks to examine how individuals with disabilities gain access to transportation and the interpersonal relationships that affect opportunities for social participation …

New Beijing | A Renewed Vernacular, Bowen Victor Zhang
Architecture Senior Theses
What does the term "vernacular" means? In an increasingly flay world, this thesis seeks to define the essential elements of the vernacular architecture of Beijing in order to propose a contemporary residential archetype.
In the past century, China has experienced unprecedented economic growth and development. Along with the many influences introduced by cross-cultural interactions, the phenomenon of architectural and social gentrification has begun to affect many of the populations living in urban centers. The same gentrifying forces that have drastically changed Greenwich Village and other New York City neighborhoods has rapidly moved to China and has replaced centruries-old vernacular communities …
Never-Land | A Parasitic And Accumulative Approach To Urbanization In China, Xiaoyan Dong
Never-Land | A Parasitic And Accumulative Approach To Urbanization In China, Xiaoyan Dong
Architecture Senior Theses
Ever since 1960s, European situationist and Japanese metabolist architects constantly reject the uniformity and totalitarian of modern architecture/urban design, seeking parasitic and dynamic approaches to post-war urbanization. Projects such as the Plug-In City and the Tokyo Bay dream of alternative urban scenarios by reversing traditional perceptions of infrastructure’s role in the city, combining architecture, technology and society together. However, these megastructure projects not only neglect the existing urban context but also lack political and economic driving force. As a result, they are considered utopian by many contemporary critics.
Fifty years later in China, fast urbanization process creates problems for both …

Architecture Senior Theses
This thesis contends that architecture can be a tool for exposing the social, environmental, economic, and political problems caused by industrial beef production and excessive cultural consumption of beef in order to promote meaningful change. A narrative is established in which a fictitious beef corporation seeks the expertise of an architect to design a Transparency Tour as part of a green washing campaign. However, while the intent of the corporation is to mislead consumers to gain loyalty, the architect seizes the opportunity to infiltrate the system and expose realities that would have remained hidden. Subversive design interventions within three stops …

In the Arabian Gulf countries, the majlis is a central part of the house. The most public space within it, the majlis represents the household’s occupants to society and its social and economic status. As the house reflects culture and civilization, so the family is understood as a micro-level society of individuals raised in its institutions. Hence, the house is a manifestation of family structure, religious beliefs, and individual needs and desires, reflecting the family’s economic, cultural, and social backgrounds and aspirations. The majlis offers a unique space in Arab societies, articulating cultural and social factors that directly impact identity …

As Carr et al (1992, pp. 92) observe ‘places that do not meet people’s needs or serve any important functions for people will be underused and unsuccessful’. This observation conversely implies that places can be judged by the intensity and diversity of observed activities, provision of facilities, access to amenities and the extent to which these traits met people’s needs can be used as a measure of the ‘success’of the place. With a view to informing this observation by empirical enquiry, this paper reports on a Delphi inquiry of the opinions of professionals involved in the property field. The inquiry …

Infrastructure For Economic Growth And Development: Addressing The Infrastructure Finance Gap, Michael Regan
Michael Regan
Infrastructure is one of the most important tools for accelerating economic development in developing and transition economies and in concert with a nation’s institutional and policy settings, it is one of the key drivers of economic development, local and international trade, improved living standards and the relief of poverty. However, the benefits are not always uniform across nations, the results vary significantly between industries and improved social returns from additional investment have more to do with the procurement method and operational efficiencies than the amount of money that is employed.
