Greenways are as diverse in their contemporary forms as the geographical regions they sample. Within an Australian urban context this paper will outline how greenways have added to their culturally focussed intentions of recreation and active transport (Little, 1995; Walmsley, 1995) and could now be described as ‘green infrastructure’. Described by Benedict & McMahon (2006) as essential and life-supporting, Australian green infrastructure follows Europe’s lead (Jongman, Külvik, & Kristiansen, 2004) expanding the greenway remit to include vital hydrological functions (Ahern, 2007), the provision of valuable ecosystem services (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005) and a range of essential ecological benefits for urban regions across multiple scales. This paper begins by reviewing Sydney’s open space and greenway history, policy and planning and culminates with a detailed study of its most recent greenway proposal, the Sydney Green Grid (Schaffer, 2015). As a multi-functional green infrastructure this city-wide framework aims to create a strategic open space network; to reinforce sense of place between citizens and landscape; and to promote multifunctional environmental, health, social and economic benefits. A few years ago, I was reading about a booming Chinese city that wanted to complement development with parks. Planners in Shenzhen were debating whether to create a “Central Park” or an “Emerald Necklace,” referencing the parks that landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted designed for New York (1858) and Boston (1878-1896) respectively. Shenzhen ended up creating an “Emerald Necklace” network of parkland, presumably because it served residents more effectively. This story indicates the strong influence that Frederick Law Olmsted still holds over planners and the public around the world.

Urban heat islands (UHI) have been known since the 19th century (Howard, 1820) and describe the difference in temperature between cities and their rural surroundings. This difference can be up to 12°C (Eliasson, 2000, 31); the phenomenon is caused by the transformation of natural surfaces through e.g. soil sealing, construction of infrastructure and buildings. Green infrastructure (GI) is considered to be a planning concept that has potential to improve green space planning in urban areas by offering a holistic, integrated approach (e.g., Pauleit et al., 2011; Davies et al., 2015). In this paper we focus on multifunctionality as an important principle of GI planning. By scrutinizing case studies in Germany (Berlin), the UK (Edinburgh), and Denmark (Aarhus), we examine how multifunctionality is acknowledged by urban green space practitioners and provide recommendations on how to consider multifunctionality more proactively and comprehensively.

The paper dwells on greenways as natural and cultural corridors, and their value for the contemporary city change and resilience. Just after a short theoretical approach on urban landscape architecture related to the sustainability and urban resilience, we intend to present our project that won the second prize in the Panhellenic competition, organized by the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy, for the redesign of Agia Sofia’ s axis, one of the main historical traces of Thessaloniki’ s urban landscape. Greenways are linear open spaces and networks of lands that are planned, designed and managed for ecological, scenic, recreational and cultural purposes (Little, 1990; Ahern, 1995; Fabos, 1995; Erickson, 2004; Jongman & Pungetti, 2004). Greenways are commonly structured by natural or humanmade features such as rivers, ridgelines, railroads, canals or roads (Erickson, 2004). In the international greenway movement, greenways no longer had only a beautification and recreational function, but expanded to multiple objectives, such as habitat protection, flood hazard reduction, water quality improvement, historical preservation, education and interpretation (Searns, 1995; Tan, 2006). Moreover, the concept of greenways shows high compatibility with diverse forms, which is “a route which is good from an environmental point of view” (Turner, 1998).

Managers of many natural areas are facing challenges in maintaining greenways, given limited human and financial resources to deal with the vast areas of land that they manage. Volunteerism has increasingly been considered key to maintaining trails and other facilities. Organizations have sought ways to incorporate people into trail maintenance practices. For example, the Adirondack Mountain Club in New York provides various volunteer opportunities for members and non-members. Trail and Greenway systems in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties, Maryland are overseen by the Maryland National Capitol Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC). These greenway systems are extensive and provide trails for a combined suburban and urban population of over 1.8 million people. These trails systems are also connected to the trail systems of the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C). Urban structures are being increasingly cut by various technical barriers, in particular by the new or modernized roads connections. Their sizes are growing; accompanying infrastructure such as acoustic screens appear. This leads to the disadvantageous fragmentation of the urban tissue. Therefore urban landscape is being deformed.
