Thermal Mass Performance Of Concrete Panels Incorporated With Phase Change Materials, Dervilla Niall, Roger West, Oliver Kinnane, Sarah Mccormack
Conference papers
Using the mass of a building as a thermal storage system can reduce the demand on the auxiliary heating and cooling systems of the building. Concrete combines a high specific heat capacity with a thermal conductivity that is appropriate for the diurnal heating and cooling cycle of buildings. The heat storage capacity of concrete can be enhanced by adding phase change materials (PCMs) which provide a high latent heat storage capacity. However the addition of PCM to concrete reduces the conductivity of the concrete which may affect the ability of a PCM-concrete panel to absorb and release heat within the …
Educational Buildings As Educational Buildings: Can Sustainable Architecture Help Support Sustainability In The Curriculum?, Claire Speedie, Mark Mulville
Educational Buildings As Educational Buildings: Can Sustainable Architecture Help Support Sustainability In The Curriculum?, Claire Speedie, Mark Mulville
Conference papers
This paper explores whether the architectural design of educational buildings - by incorporating an expression of the sustainable design - helps to educate users towards adoption of sustainable practices. Utilising observational studies from primary schools incorporating sustainable design measures, the research explored their impact on the curriculum.
School buildings accommodate the educational process but design briefs do not require that buildings educate their users. The paper demonstrated that sustainable features of the buildings were not well integrated into the curriculum and that one explanation was the lack of interpretation incorporated into the architecture to support teachers lacking an appreciation of …

Bim: Building Information Management (Not Modelling), Kevin Deegan, Malachy Mathews

Being aware of something is not the same as having knowledge of or ability in the selected subject matter. Much of the Irish Architecture Engineering & Construction (AEC) industry is now aware of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as highlighted in a national survey from an Academic Industry Body (2016) which shows that a total of 90% of respondents reported that their awareness of BIM has improved to some degree in recent years. However, it is a legitimate question to ask if the industry does have knowledge and understanding of the processes? Defining these processes would be: knowing the difference in …
