A Comparative Analysis Of Southern Nevada Municipalities, And Their Active Participation To Implement Historical Preservation, Rhonda M. Reeves Dec 1999

A Comparative Analysis Of Southern Nevada Municipalities, And Their Active Participation To Implement Historical Preservation, Rhonda M. Reeves

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A comparative analysis of southern Nevada municipalities, and their active participation to implement historical preservation is the foundation of research for this paper. The city of Las Vegas and surrounding municipalities have varying preservation programs in place. The distinctions between the municipalities historic preservation programs foster little protection for the historic site itself in most cases. Historic preservationists are actively bringing to the attention of government the importance of preservation, and are seeking more and more action on the part of the government to implement historic preservation mandates and protection.

The federal government funding for historical preservation within states is …

Roosevelt Island: Completing An Urban Community, Karin M. Kilgore Dec 1999

Roosevelt Island: Completing An Urban Community, Karin M. Kilgore

Architecture Senior Theses

The thesis became an architectural exploration of what makes neighborhood and community at two scales: at the scale of the city (macrocosm), represented by the urban plan; and at the scale of the individual (microcosm), represented by the concept of the house and housing. At these two contrasting scales, the main focus of the study was to explore how an urban design can shape community and to explore the role that housing plays in the making of urban fabric/neighborhood. These two main issues of urban planning and housing prototypes, and the set of questions they generated, became the framework for …

A Methodology For Natural Resources Analysis Appropriate For County Level Planning, Jeffrey Carl Pfitzer Dec 1999

A Methodology For Natural Resources Analysis Appropriate For County Level Planning, Jeffrey Carl Pfitzer

Masters Theses

In this thesis a methodology for developing an integrated cumulative analysis of sensitive natural resources was developed. Themes of natural resources-waterways, wetlands, forested lands, prime agricultural soils, and steep slopes-were brought together in a GIS system, in a grid format, in a manner so that each cell of the grid accumulated value according to the increasing presence of resource themes. For example, an area (30 meter x 30 meter grid cell) containing only one of the above themes is given a value of "l," whereas an area containing slopes, streams, and forests might, after weighting factors, have a value of …

Help In Time: An Evaluation Of Philadelphia's Community-Based Homelessness Prevention Program, Yin-Ling I. Wong, Meg Koppel, Dennis P. Culhane, Stephen Metraux, David E. Eldridge, Amy Hillier, Helen R. Lee

Dennis P. Culhane

This report provides an evaluation of Philadelphia's neighborhood-based homelessness prevention initiative. Results indicate that nearly all households served do not become homeless. But it is unclear if households would have become homeless had they not been served. Recommendations are made for targeting prevention interventions to families requesting shelter.

It has been along-established goal at Syracuse that the final efforts of both the undergraduate and graduate prgrams be indistinguishable from ont another; thus the mixture of undergraduate and graduate award winners.

The Architectural Drawing, Luke Taylor-Brown Oct 1999

The Architectural Drawing, Luke Taylor-Brown

Architecture Thesis Prep

"It is the intent of this investigation to explore the translation which occurs between architectural drawing and built architecture. This translation occurs over a gap which exists between the realm of conception and the realm of construction. All forms of architectural representation (drawings, computer or physical models) bridge theis gap in some way and, by doing so, translate architectural meaning."

The Virtual Real, Kurt Schnarr Oct 1999

The Virtual Real, Kurt Schnarr

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Digital technologies have led to the transformation of different types of information into binary form. This transformation changes the way one perceives materiality, space, and its relationship to information. On one level. cyberspace creates a condition in which communication, travel, and education occur at a fast and efficient rate. On another level, cyberspace allows one to exist within a different condition, another world created by simulation and virtual reality. However, one cannot engage these virtual worlds without the existence of physical space. Aside from being an essential element for human existence, physical space evokes human contact, which must occur to …

Advertising / Gender Studies, Delia Nevola Oct 1999

Advertising / Gender Studies, Delia Nevola

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The architectural blurring of genered space. IMages are presented to society as the representation of men/women, and what it means to be one versus the other. This imagery takes form in the products that are produced and dvertised. Architecture will therefore take on the role of (re)presentation, meaning the presentation of products and the representation of genes, through the investigation of binary opposites. These binary opposites, those that are assumed by society, become the architectural elements to demonstrate the presumed differences between genders. The intervention which establishes a blue between these binaries advocates a degenderization of architecture."

On Details, W. Elijah Hoisington

Imageability Of Place, Sara Sachs Oct 1999

Imageability Of Place, Sara Sachs

Architecture Senior Theses

"This thesis is an investigation into the role of architecture in the imageability of place. Architecture as built form acts as the structure by which an observer measures his or her position relative to the environment. A highly imageable structure, therefore, has the ability to significantly aid the observer in navigation through the built environment. This investigation focuses on the elements that allow a structure to become imageable and, ultimately, how architecture can use these elements to achieve a higher imageability of place."
