One Grand Park: Remaking New Hampshire Farms Into Summer Homes, 1870-1930, Lorayne Billings
One Grand Park: Remaking New Hampshire Farms Into Summer Homes, 1870-1930, Lorayne Billings
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
In the late nineteenth century, the growth of industry, western competition, costs, and poor soil caused some New Hampshire farmers to quit the farm, leaving the buildings uninhabited. New Hampshire state officials were not interested in rescuing those farms, but were interested in stemming the negative publicity about abandoned farms. The state legislature passed an act to encourage immigration into the deserted farms, and Nahum Bachelder, secretary of the state board of agriculture, advertised the farms as summer homes for well-heeled urbanites. He eventually received criticism for pursuing self-serving interests and for neglecting official agricultural duties, specifically to the struggling …
The Architecture Of Argostoli: A Venetian Colonial New Town, Nicholas Patricios
The Architecture Of Argostoli: A Venetian Colonial New Town, Nicholas Patricios
Nicholas Patricios
Argostóli, a Venetian new town on the Ionian Island of Kefallinía, provides an example of how architecture is shaped by cultural factors. Relevant factors in the context of the Venetian occupation of Kefallinía are the political, economic, social, and ecclesiastical ones. From 1500until 1797, Kefallinía and the other Ionian Islands remained a Venetian colony. During these three centuries the Islands formed the boundary between the eastern and western worlds. While most of Greece fell under Turkish rule, the Ionian Islands were exposed to western culture through Venice. Argostóli became the new capital in 1757. The new colonial capital had no …

St. Finbarre’S Cathedral And Other Ecclesiastical Work In County Cork By William Burges 1827 -1881, Debbie Dawson
Theses
In this thesis I set out to examine the important role played by William Burges in the revival of stained glass in the mid-nineteenth century. I have examined how his unique vision and obsession with the thirteenth century developed through his extensive travelling abroad, studying European architecture. My central discussion is on Burges’ first major commission at the age of thirty-five; St. Finbarre’s Cathedral, Cork. Through the use of local newspapers, correspondence and documentation, such as Vestry Minute Books, designs and cartoons stored in the Chapter House of St. Finbarre’s, I have tried to put the building of St. Finbarre’s …
