Hands-On Structural Engineering Experiences With The "Anex" Mini-Laboratory, Richard A. Behr, Colin Othniel Benjamin, Azam A. Mirza
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The ANEX facility has been developed to allow nearly real-time comparisons of analysis results with experimental data gathered on small-scale structural models. ANEX has been used successfully for in-class demonstrations, student-designed experiments, and comprehensive design/build competitions in an introductory structural analysis course at the University of Missouri-Rolla. An expert system is now being developed to guide ANEX users and to act as a trouble-shooter and advisor in the event that analytical and experimental results do not correlate acceptably well. ANEX, using only simple, small-scale model structures, is able to enrich structural engineering instruction by introducing students to the sophisticated capabilities …

Urban Design And Conflicting City Images Of Brazil: Rio De Janeiro And Curitiba, Vicente Del Rio
Urban Design And Conflicting City Images Of Brazil: Rio De Janeiro And Curitiba, Vicente Del Rio
City and Regional Planning
Imageability of places, cities and countries is strongly influenced by tourist and political portraits in the media. As human cognition relies on inferential perception and contrasting categories, marketing strategies exploit partial truths and conflicting city images to direct public perceptions. This article addresses the relationship between international perception, image building and urban design in the case of Brazil and the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba. Their contrasting images as exploited by the international media expose only partial truths. In fact, these images represent complementary development contradictions that co-exist in any major city today.

User Interface And Data Structure Design For Architectural Expert System, Yonghua Ma
User Interface And Data Structure Design For Architectural Expert System, Yonghua Ma
Theses
Computers are currently used to generate drawings in the architectural design process. This thesis anticipates the development of an Architectural Expert System, which could provide assistance in the decision-making processes in architectural design. The focus is on the design of the user interface of such a system. Architectural object-oriented data hierarchies are created. Also, a set of drawing tools, which assist the user in the creation of architectural objects such as walls, windows, and doors, are provided.

When The Mall Comes To A Small Town: How To Shape Development With Carrots And Sticks, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval
When The Mall Comes To A Small Town: How To Shape Development With Carrots And Sticks, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
Across the United States there is a continuous expansion of population away from our traditional urban center cities. As people have occupied housing in these former open spaces, industrial parks and commercial centers have soon followed. While local planning boards have been able, in most cases, to handle residential and industrial growth, they are rarely able to handle extensive retail growth. Indeed, when a mall developer - complete with a multitalented staff and reams of plans - comes before a small town planning board, there is inevitable shock and a great deal of fear. In our experience, few small towns …

A Facade For San Lorenzo, Rod Barker
A Facade For San Lorenzo, Rod Barker
Architecture Thesis Prep
"A facade for San Lorenzo presents the opportunity to re-examine the issues of a city. It must deal with the existing structure of the city, address its history and past, as well as the present. It needs to have meaning for the citizens and visitors alike, meaning that creates images of the other parts of the city and the particular place. It needs to become a symbol not only for the complex but also for the entire city."

"This thesis poses an investigation into the work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Mies van der Rohe as elements of a formal architectural tradition in Berlin; It proposes the institution of an architecture based up on a chosen set of historical models, with the aim of providing one possible foundation for architectural renewal (of unified Berlin) implying cultural continuity. To this end, the thesis poses an investigation into the representative qualities of architecture while examining the informative potential of artifact.

The Legacies Of Deindustrialization And The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, Douglas M. Reynolds
The Legacies Of Deindustrialization And The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, Douglas M. Reynolds
New England Journal of Public Policy
Creation of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor and release of a master plan for cultural and physical resource development is creating a new standard for private, local, state, and federal partnerships. Actions by the Corridor's partners are shaped by both past and contemporary economic development issues. Using tools of humanistic inquiry — history, economics, preservation, sociology, political science — for social and economic purposes signifies far-reaching shifts and possibilities for public planning and policy philosophies in both public and private agencies.
