Landscape Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This study investigated woody plant composition, structure, and biomass of hedgerows and fencerows, and for effects between human attitudes and managemnet practices. Fencerows arise as narrow strips of woody and herbaceous plants at feild margins and property boundaries. Hedgerows grow from intentional linear plantings. Exotic species wer more important in fencerow composition. Hackberry, Missouri goosberry, American plum, and white mulberry readily inhabited both fencerows and hedgerows. Woody plant exhibited clumped distribution in both hedgerows and fencerows. A moisture gradient emerged as a factor in distribution of species. Linking The Past To The Future: A Landscape Conservation Strategy For Waterford, Virginia, Elizabeth Brabec, Mary Ann Nabor, Harry L. Dodson

The report presents a planning strategy for protecting Waterford, an historic community located in Loudoun County, Virginia. The Waterford Historic District, including the village and surrounding farmland, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. In 1986, the National Park Service determined that Waterford was threatened by proposed new construction on an historic farm almost directly in the center of the Landmark. The report identifies alternative development strategies that would protect the historic integrity of the village landscape. These strategies were intended to be used in negotiations with local landowners, as negotiated but voluntary land conservation strategies.

International Student Design Competition Of Two Community Elementary Schoolyards, Roger Hart, Cindi Katz, Selim Iltus, Maria Rosario Mora

As part of the project for the Participatory Design of Two Community Elementary Schoolyards in Harlem, P.S. 185 and P.S. 208 (The Schoolyards Project), the Children's Environments Research Group of the City University of New York held an International Student Design Competition for the design of these schoolyards. The competition drew sixty entries from various countries. The jury met on October 10, 1990 and awarded one First Prize and five Honorable Mentions. A landscape architect was then hired to utilize the best ideas, together with the architectural program which had been produced with the school and the surrounding community.

Problem. Few recognize the potential between campus beautification and the enrichment of the institutional programs or the responsibility role of stewardship for school lands. Often, campus beautification has not been considered an important item in capital outlay.

Method. The study utilized the descriptive method. Literature was reviewed to gather concepts related to campus beautification that could be applied to SDA academies and colleges.
