An Agitated (Co)Existence - The Conquest Of Timeless Meztisaje, Joaquin Bonifaz
Architecture Senior Theses
"The success of the Marvelous Real is in the acknowledgement as existing of the pre-existed, implied or unnoticed and its revelation through unusual juxtaposition and interweaving narrated in a passive tone. The contention of this thesis is that if this type of juxtaposition of existing, pre-existed, implied and unnoticed is translated into an architectural concept where the tools of juxtaposition are space, form, program, materiality, and order it is possible to create, by addition and subtraction, a heightened reality of the historical layering of site."

Using Condition Index Inspection Results To Update The Reliability Of Miter Gates For Navigation Locks, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol, Stuart D. Foltz
Architectural Engineering
In an effort to ensure public safety, many civil engineering structures undergo various inspections to assess their condition or performance. Comprehensive procedures for using routine inspection data to update reliability assessments have not been developed. This paper illustrates how the Condition Index inspection data from a specific miter gate on a Corps of Engineers navigation lock can be modified and used for this purpose.

Design work from the 2001 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Movie Theatres. Heath MacDonald. The project is sited adjacent to a courtyard-like enclosure just off the highway, at the entry to Ricardo Legorreta's Solana project in Southlake, Texas. The blank exterior walls cut into the ground, and sloping rooftops emerge above the earth and twist in rhythmic patterns around an entry courtyard. The profile is like an expressive series of dancing rock outcroppings. A crystalline entry form contains lines from famous films etched in color. Walkways bridge an open lobby volume …

Theorizing Suburban Public Space In Kendall, Fabio J. Bendana
Theorizing Suburban Public Space In Kendall, Fabio J. Bendana
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether public space in the suburbs has the same settings as that of a central city or if it has its own characteristics.
In order to approach this problem the area of Kendall was thoroughly studied by examining aerial maps, historic images and writings of local historians such as Donna Knowles Born. Heavy emphasis was placed on the transformation of the original one-mile grid characteristic of the city of Miami. As the area of Kendall was being developed, the grid was transformed into an irregular and organic method of laying out a …

Interplay: A Facility For The Design And Manufacturing Of Toys In Burlington, Vermont, Bryan Hale
Architecture Thesis Prep
"It is through interplay that we transcend a static, mechanical existence, but we can only operate within the constraints provided by our environment. The multivalent environment invites interplay and takes one of two forms: either that of kinetic transformability, or of pluralized indeterminacy. This multivalence empowers us through choice and interpretation, and in a sense we are validated as conscious, creative beings. By creating ambiguous spaces that exclude functional indicators and creating transformable architectural elements, this condition will be realized."

Urban Agents, New Events: A Transformation Of The Postindustrial Landscape, Kevin Toukoumidis
Architecture Thesis Prep
"Railway yards, abandoned industrial processing plants, decommissioned factories and polluted river ways are the leftovers from the industrial age. With the deindustrialization of society, a new prevailing urban condition has resulted: a marginalized landscape of residual spaces and urban voids, often with real or perceived contamination.... The potential for reclaiming these marginalized landscapes becomes a catalyst for the design of new modes of occupation and human activity."

Configuration Of Spatial Dynamics Through Cross-Cultural Reference; Korean-American Cultural Center At The Edge Between Inside And Outside, Kwangpyo Steve Koh
Architecture Senior Theses
"In this thesis, I would like to investigate and study the role of architecture as a spatial mediator between different cultural spheres within the city context. Specifically, I would like to focus on Koreatown and its surrounding in New York City. Through the architectural intervention of a cultural center at the edge of the community, I wish to explore the relationship between the Korean community and its immediate environment, between a transplanted ethnic neighborhood and the city, between inside and outside. The architecture of the new cultural venter will take advantage of this relationship to become a space for porous …

Msrdc And Mumbai-Pune Expressway: A Sustainable Model For Privatising Construction Of Physical Infrastructure?, Hemalata C. Dandekar, Sulakshana Mahajan
City and Regional Planning
This case study of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway points out that delivery of infrastructure like road and highways, especially mega projects, totally through the private sector is currently difficult. In the absence of such private sector capacity to take on this responsibility, the role has been creatively shouldered by the Maharashtra government by forming and supporting a road development corporation - carved out of its public works department in its primary mission, the building of essential projects in a timely fashion. The experience of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway indicates that the public sector, freed of political intervention and outdated organisational structure and …

Predicting Residential Satisfaction: A Comparative Case Study, James J. Potter, Jean L. Chicoine, Kathryn E. Speicher
Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
This is a comparative case study that focuses on resident satisfaction in three buildings renovated for housing. A survey based on environment-behavior factors that can contribute to resident satisfaction was developed and distributed to the buildings' residents. Residents in fifty-two percent (52.5%) of the units in the three buildings responded (N = 64). Index variables used were: management, perception, wayfinding, safety. comfort. and adequacy. There was a significant relationship between resident satisfaction and age for one building. Safety and perception were significant for all buildings. Safety, perception and comfort were significant in different ways for each of the three buildings.

"In Defense of Preservation" is the transcript of a presentation at the Gotham History Festival at the CUNY Graduate Center, October 6, 2001. The discussants argued that historic preservation is vital to New York City's economic and cultural health, and countered arguments that preservation was elitist and hindered the city's growth. Dorothy Minor discussed the legal basis for preservation and reviewed the Penn Central decision and other court cases. Anthony C. Wood discussed the history of historic preservation in New York. And Eric W. Allison presented the intersection of preservation with the liveable cities movement.
