With the mid-20th Century construction of an elevated highway along Manhattan’s East River, the declining neighborhood of the Lower East Side was removed from its waterfront. As cities begin to re-examine their edges, I feel it is appropriate to address the issues of the Lower East Side community and its former riverfront. Utilizing the recent developments in Manhattan, London, and Chicago as a basis for determining how metropolitan areas are attempting to reconnect with their shores, a set of questions were developed, analyzed, and then applied to the Lower East Side. Pinewood Estate is a significant resource in the history of the theory and practice of landscape architecture. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a landscape plan to restore the Pinewood Estate to its historic integrity in order to retain and reflect its past.

In order to determine the criteria used to establish how and to what period the estate should be restored to, the Secretary of the Interior's Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes was followed. This thesis explores individual’s relationships with current communication technologies. The consideration of scale in future information systems opens the door to opportunities for improvement. Architecture becomes the medium to relieve the issues of misinformation in Islamorada, Florida.

In order to approach this problem the area of Kendall was thoroughly studied by examining aerial maps, historic images and writings of local historians such as Donna Knowles Born. The purpose of this study was to learn about the historical development of Eight Street in order to use this information in the revitalization of this area with the new migration of artists.

This study demonstrated a cyclical pattern prompted by the economical success of the immigrant group. The 1960 Cuban migration brought an era of life to Eight Street. As the Cubans became successful they left the area causing a decline. Presently the area is witnessing a migration of artists that may bring it new life.

The objective of this thesis was to investigate the effects of the built environment on the outcome of young patients. This investigation included recent innovations in children's hospitals that integrated both medical and architectural case studies as part of their design issues. In addition, the intervention responded to man-made conditions and natural elements of the site. The thesis project, a Children's Rehabilitation Hospital, is located at 1500 N.W.
