Interior Design Symposium: Fostering Identity, Diversity, & Connectivity
This poster presentation will exhibit the ongoing design work within two small islands adjacent to Diner Key Marina gifted by the City of Miami to the non-profit organization, Shake-A-Leg. This organization works to blur the lines between access, recreation, and skill, redefining what is possible. Abled and disabled children, adolescents, and young adults go to Shake-A-Leg to participate in a myriad of activities such as sailing, kayaking, swimming, painting, and socializing in these islands regardless of their inadequate walkways and installations. The users are people from different social statuses, physical and mental abilities. This poster will exhibit the design proposal …

Designing Affiliative Objects: Investigating The Affiliations Of Medical Identification Jewellery, Alexandra Haagaard, William Leeming
Designing Affiliative Objects: Investigating The Affiliations Of Medical Identification Jewellery, Alexandra Haagaard, William Leeming
DRS Biennial Conference Series
affiliation of medical identification jewellery with paramedics as the central user group. In doing so, we use Suchman’s notion of the affiliative object to reframe medical identification jewellery as a compound epistemic object with affiliations to paramedics in the province of Ontario, Canada. The paper begins by providing background including the methods used to assess the use of medical identification jewellery. There follows a section on how the findings from fieldwork were used to develop a first iteration of design recommendations. A compliancy table then appends discussion of key findings and design recommendations. Three design concepts were found to be …
The Artist And The Rebel: The Art Of Graffiti And Its Impact On Memory Architecture, Stephen A. Setman
The Artist And The Rebel: The Art Of Graffiti And Its Impact On Memory Architecture, Stephen A. Setman
Celebration
The lasting presence of graffiti in major cities like Berlin raises the question, what kind of perspective does such an art form have on memory? Given that graffiti are written or painted on structures and buildings, which are already their own kind of monument, and that the content of graffiti tends towards the politically and socially critical, how are we to understand the relationship of these works to places of memory creation? Why, for example, do we sometimes give monumental protection (Denkmanlschutz) to works of graffiti, and why so often not? My research investigates the roll of graffiti in cultural …

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
This project delves into the possibilities of using poetry, its reading and its creation, as a form of architectural research. Cities and landscapes have long inspired poets and writers — so, is it possible to reverse this process?
I chose Pablo Neruda’s poetry for analysis because of its imagery : the sea, stones and forests -- all evocative of the Finnish landscape. I also wrote poetry in order to more directly express the ultimate goals of the design.
Before this phase of research, I first familiarized myself with the Finnish landscape — cultural and designed. Through the combination of first-hand …

Between Regional And National Identity: Spectacle And Festival In Modern Japan, Sean H. Mcpherson
Between Regional And National Identity: Spectacle And Festival In Modern Japan, Sean H. Mcpherson
2013 New England Association for Asian Studies Conference
Distinctive cultures of display and spectacle mark the regional diversity of Japanese festivals. At the same time, material and ritual links among these traditions speak to broader forces of cultural standardization and commodification. This paper examines the mobile architecture and wood sculpture of festival floats (dashi) in central Japan as discursive and material markers of the connections between local Shintō festivals (matsuri) and broader agendas of nationalism in modern Japan. The Chita peninsula in Aichi prefecture is famous for dashimatsuri, Shintō shrine festivals featuring the procession of huge, wheeled floats called dashi. I argue that the recurrent reinvention …

From Ashes To Architecture: Memorialization At Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Sara Elyse Kaplan
From Ashes To Architecture: Memorialization At Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Sara Elyse Kaplan
Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)
Buchenwald concentration camp, located in Weimar, Germany, was a place of suffering, cruelty and death during World War II and during the first five years of the cold war. As many were tortured and perished there, it has since become a place of remembrance. Being one of the few concentration camps to not be destroyed by the Nazis before they could be liberated, since its final closure in 1950 numerous memorials have been erected to commemorate the events that took place and the people who fell victim to those events. Following several theorists four of the memorials at Buchenwald are …

Undergraduate Research Conference
My group had the opportunity to receive real world experience from several advertising agencies, schools, museums, and self sufficient artists. We observed art and design from timeless pieces in history to contemporary works. The team was also able to network with other students and professionals in our field.
