The continuing dialogue concerning the development of building systems for housing has produced few results. The economic, political, and technical obstacles encountered are sufficiently prohibitive to discourage new entries in the field. There does exist however an enormous amount of building products that potentially could be assembled to form a building system. Utilizing existing products in this manner could circumvent many problems faced in the development of a system composed of completely custom components. In today's field of architecture, a great deal of emphasis is placed upon the use of new forms and new materials by a great number of architects. Yet the vast majority of these persons are not equipped to carry out this task. It is not that they do not possess the technical knowledge, it is that they do not have the right approach in tackling the problem. For purposes of clarity, the study is divided into two parts. Part I includes discussions on Colorado mining history and community planning and is intended to provide a framework for the reader to relate the architectural analysis which follows. Part II is introduced with a section dealing with architectural styles to familiarize the reader with their influence on the architecture of the mining communities as well as the country as a whole.
