The Reutilization Of Old Buildings, Kevin S. Munroe May 1975

The Reutilization Of Old Buildings, Kevin S. Munroe

Architecture and Planning ETDs

An active campaign must be waged to save many of the old buildings throughout the country. Not only are the bulldozers and wrecking balls tearing great holes in our past, but they are destroying an extremely valuable natural resource. In city after city, it has been clearly shown that without the efforts of concerned individuals the buildings come down. In recent years the record has become equally clear in regard to the benefits of reutilization. Throughout the country citizens are looking with pride and a sense of rekindled ties with their past at areas that were, but a short while …

The Obsolete Hospital: Raze Or Recycle?, Donna E. Quasthoff May 1975

The Obsolete Hospital: Raze Or Recycle?, Donna E. Quasthoff

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The obsolescence of a hospital is often caused by factors other than structural deterioration. Usually it is because the hospital is outmoded as an efficient medical facility and expansion or remodeling are unfeasible because the hospital is space-locked both exteriorly and interiorly. Or a hospital is sometimes closed because the community is unable to financially support it or obtain the necessary medical staff. New more stringent code regulations are also making it financially impractical for some hospitals to comply. Another factor for closing a hospital can be duplication of services in the same area.

Often, because of these reasons for …

The Concept Of Maximum Learning And How This Concept Can Lead To Achieving Efficiency Of Space In A Secondary School Physical Plant, Case Study: Taos High School, Bashir Ul Haq May 1975

The Concept Of Maximum Learning And How This Concept Can Lead To Achieving Efficiency Of Space In A Secondary School Physical Plant, Case Study: Taos High School, Bashir Ul Haq

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The purpose of this study is to develop an understanding of the concept of maximum learning in secondary school education and how this concept can lead to achieving efficiency of space. The concept of maximum learning is based on the research findings of Educational Facilities Laboratories, Inc. These research findings are based on the concept that maximum learning depends upon the establishment of educational objectives, awareness of the changing nature of educational objectives, and finding more effective ways to achieve the educational objectives. The concept of efficiency of space is based on the maximization of the effective utilization of space …

A Data Base For Simulating Electrical System Growth, Franklin Marshall Fine May 1975

A Data Base For Simulating Electrical System Growth, Franklin Marshall Fine

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The thesis describes and discusses the methodology developed and used by the author for producing an input load data base for the Westinghouse Distribution System Planning Program (DSP), a computer simulation model for planning electrical subtransmission and distribution systems. The Public Service Company of New Mexico's electrical system in Albuquerque is first described as is the DSP model. The methodology used is then discussed: first the estimating procedures for establishing the base year load, and then the techniques used for projecting future load. Possible improvements in these methods are offered and the ultimate limitations of such a data base are …

The Use Of A Sequenced Set Of Photographic Images Of Non-Architect Designed Architecture As A Teaching Tool For Architectural Design, John L. Gould May 1975

The Use Of A Sequenced Set Of Photographic Images Of Non-Architect Designed Architecture As A Teaching Tool For Architectural Design, John L. Gould

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis concerns itself with the use of a sequenced set of photographic images of non-architect designed architecture as a teaching tool for architectural design. Non-architect designed architecture was chosen because frequently this form of architecture exhibits strong architectural design gestures which are not used by architectural professionals. To indicate another set of design referents, other than those used by the professionals, was to show another alternative for learning aspects of architectural design. The first step taken was to photograph in black and white photography forty-nine instances of non-architect designed architecture. Each of these instances has to be a visually …

Housing Program For The City Of Chihuahua, Miguel A. Cheng-Guajardo May 1975

Housing Program For The City Of Chihuahua, Miguel A. Cheng-Guajardo

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study is made, as a basic function, to better understand Mexico's accelerated urban expansion, where it stands today and where it will be by the year 1980. It also explores the similarity between Mexico and the rest of the Latin American countries.

The high rate of population growth, which in many cities soars as high as 5 to 7 percent per year, points to the need for important institutional and technological reforms in the fields of housing and planning urban growth. If this trend continues, population in the larger urban centers will double every fourteen years. According to the …

An Investigation Of Three-Dimensional Modular Construction And Its Application To Housing, Brady William Roark May 1975

An Investigation Of Three-Dimensional Modular Construction And Its Application To Housing, Brady William Roark

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Many people have failed and many companies have gone bankrupt attempting to apply assembly line methods to the housing industry. A few, for what ever reasons, have been at least partially successful. Seven successful regional manufacturers of modular houses were observed and interviewed in this study to determine how they make their product and the problems involved with this type of construction. The summaries and conclusions of those visits provoke several considerations for designing a regional system. One consideration is incorporating steel as a basic structural material, which leads the investigation to seven modular housing proposals that use steel as …

Two Arenas For Design Change: Solar And Social, Travis Lee Price Iii Apr 1975

Two Arenas For Design Change: Solar And Social, Travis Lee Price Iii

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis is concerned with a number of disciplines particularly solar energy technologies and their relationship "to social change. The other disciplines are psychology, politics, and economics. A central argument based on discussions, literature and academic activities about these subjects is presented in a written format ana on a video tape recording.

The thesis presents experiences outside the academic environment which are summarized in the appendices relating to projects utilizing solar energy. The projects were developed with Sun Mountain Design of Santa Fe , New Mexico. Descriptions and documents of the projects are included.

The thesis is not only inter- …

Strategy Selection In Development Planning, Richard Stephen Marshment Apr 1975

Strategy Selection In Development Planning, Richard Stephen Marshment

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis examines the use of simulation as a technique for evaluating growth strategies in developing urban areas. A computer simulation model named SIMCALI was developed as a part of this study in order to demonstrate various applications of the technique to actual planning issues. The model is the central theme of the paper. The setting for this study is Cali, Colombia, a South American city in the process of becoming a major urban area. Cali is confronting several serious problems in accomodating its rapidly growing population. The most critical of these problems is the lack of basic utility service …
