Polar Field Tent Shelters And Well-Being Of Users, James Potter, X. Winston Yan, Nathan S. Krug, Karl C. Kuivinen, Marijane E. England

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Polar research teams often spend extended periods of time away from base stations, living and working in remote field camps of portable tent shelters. This article reports on a study of the design and use of portable field tent shelters being deployed in Antarctica and other circumpolar areas. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of the shelters on health and well-being of their users from an environment-behavior perspective. Preliminary analysis indicates that although the design and use of field tent shelters were generally satisfactory, there are areas in which the shelters had some adverse bearing on …

The Impact Of Population Increase On Residents' Perceptions Of Their Quality Of Life [Abstract], James J. Potter, X. Winston Yan, Rodrigo Cantarero, Blanca Ramirez

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Throughout the world, people are migrating to find jobs and to seek a better life. As agricultural processors locate plants in rural areas with raw materials and lower labor costs, towns are experiencing pressures. They are experiencing an increase in the number of jobs available and a shortage of affordable housing to meet the needs of a growing population. To better understand the needs and perceptions of residents in a small midwestern town (population: 4,151), a multidisciplinary research team from the College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln conducted a study between September 1995 and May 1996. The focus …

Mu In Details Of Japanese Contemporary Architecture: Can The Void Represent An Idea?, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Although the idea of what architectural details should be varies among the entries in our survey, a common thread runs through them: they all implicitly agree that the form of an architectural detail represents a particular idea of what the detail should be, or, in the negative, that when details are to be excluded or ignored for either ideological or practical considerations, they have no particular form. This seems quite rationa~ even obvious. But in some contemporary Japanese an:hitecture there is anothercase altogether, of details that paradoxically, embody an intention to represent but at the same time to present no …

Landscape Ecology Of Hedgerows And Fencerows In Panama Township, Lancaster County, Nebraska, Richard K. Sutton Aug 1992

Landscape Ecology Of Hedgerows And Fencerows In Panama Township, Lancaster County, Nebraska, Richard K. Sutton

Landscape Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This study investigated woody plant composition, structure, and biomass of hedgerows and fencerows, and for effects between human attitudes and managemnet practices. Fencerows arise as narrow strips of woody and herbaceous plants at feild margins and property boundaries. Hedgerows grow from intentional linear plantings. Exotic species wer more important in fencerow composition. Hackberry, Missouri goosberry, American plum, and white mulberry readily inhabited both fencerows and hedgerows. Woody plant exhibited clumped distribution in both hedgerows and fencerows. A moisture gradient emerged as a factor in distribution of species. Management caused a significant difference in speicies richness and biomass in both hedgerows …

Design Through Drawing: Eero Saarinen's Design In The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Competition, Rumiko Handa Jan 1992

Design Through Drawing: Eero Saarinen's Design In The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Competition, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Drawing has the power to generate design. It is not only the depiction of an image in the architect's mind, but also, more importanlly, drawing, either the act or the product, can contribute to design as a physical counterpart to architectural imagination. Many architects might agree with this proposition, based on their daily practice. This research is an attempt to cast light on this phenomenon, offering a rigorous analysis and concrete yroofs. The study begins with an attempt to define architectural drawing, which ieads to an extensive investigation of the characteristics of repri::!sentation in architectural drawings. Eero Saarinen's winning entry …

The Capitals And Capitols Of Nebraska, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1990

The Capitals And Capitols Of Nebraska, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

When Europeans visit the Great Plains region of the United States, they are impressed by the newness of the place. Coming from communities that often are filled with physical evidence of great age, they are reminded that here virtually none of the visible marks of Euroamerican culture are more than a mere century old. Before 1854, the year in which Nebraska was legislated into existence, permanent residence in this place was technically illegal. Except for the never-numerous Indians, a few fur trappers and traders, and some soldiers and their camp followers clustered around Fort Kearny, Nebraska had no population. It …

An Historical Description And Analysis Of Lincoln, Nebraska’S Development Pattern: 1860-1985 Concentric Growth – A Fading Dream, Leonard Pavelka Dec 1987

An Historical Description And Analysis Of Lincoln, Nebraska’S Development Pattern: 1860-1985 Concentric Growth – A Fading Dream, Leonard Pavelka

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Three successive comprehensive plans for the city of Lincoln, Nebraska have advocated concentric growth as a goal. This thesis analyses Lincoln’s physical and economic development and finds that many elements that played a major role in the city’s growth strongly influenced residential expansion in two directions – east and south. Further investigation revealed that Lincoln’s comprehensive plans have weakened the central business district and strengthened the Gateway-East Park retail complex in east Lincoln. This thesis demonstrates that both historical tendency and the process of incremental policy making employed by the City Council make realization of the goal of concentric growth improbable.

Control Of Insect Pests In Recent Mammal Collections, S. L. Williams, Hugh H. Genoways, D. A. Schlitter

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

A review is made of numerous insecticides to determine their suitability for use in Recent mammal collections. Factors determining their value were based on human safety, ability to protect specimens without adverse effects, and other considerations. The more favorable insecticides to use in mammal collections include Dowfume 75, sulfuryl fluoride. dimethyldiclorovinyl phosphate, paradichlorobenzene, carbon dioxide, and naphthalene. Insecticides that are considered less favor able because of many limitations included aldrin, dieldrin, arsenic, borax, mitin, ethylene oxide, methoxychlor, methyl bromide, and pyrethrum. There are some insecticides that should never be used because of extreme health and/or fire hazards. These include carbon …

The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

Although the visual arts have long been a feature of civilization courses, instructors do not always exploit their full potential. This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. Its goal is to facilitate comprehensive treatment of works of art by focusing on three areas: the aesthetic dimension, the social context, and the artist’s own experience. The checklist is followed by a series of activities which encourage students to integrate the various aspects of the arts while practicing their language skills.

Planning For Reservoir Shoreline Development In Nebraska, Thomas Victor Cech May 1982

Planning For Reservoir Shoreline Development In Nebraska, Thomas Victor Cech

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Comprehensive second home development controls for reservoir shoreline areas in Nebraska do not exist at the state level, and regulations at the local level have often been created after problems have become critical. In addition, many existing local controls on shoreline residential development are not strictly enforced. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to:

  1. Identify the extent and potential demand of second home development near Nebraska’s reservoirs;

  2. Identify existing environmental and land use problems associated with such development;

  3. Identify shoreline development regulations which exist at the federal, state, and local level which affect residential development in Nebraska;

  4. Identify existing problems …

Influences On Early Twentieth Century Bungalow Housing In Lincoln, Nebraska, Madeleine F. Panarelli May 1981

Influences On Early Twentieth Century Bungalow Housing In Lincoln, Nebraska, Madeleine F. Panarelli

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Housing publications of the Bungalow era (1900 to 1930) containing over 1200 illustrated Bungalows and derivations, were compared with 717 photographed representatives in Lincoln, Nebraska. These samples were categorized by 10 types first described by writer Henry Saylor (1911). Interpretations of the style by local builders and architects in Lincoln, Nebraska, were traced to house pattern books, national and local publications, and state and city records, to determine how the style evolved locally. The search led to regional design features of the Bungalow, nearly square forms, and composite types.

Towards Principles For The Control Of Squatter Settlements In Bangkok, Thailand, Nirmal Brito Mutunayagam Jan 1974

Towards Principles For The Control Of Squatter Settlements In Bangkok, Thailand, Nirmal Brito Mutunayagam

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

The squatter problem is one of complexity and diversity, and lasting solutions to the problem have been elusive, despite the numerous techniques and approaches that have been tried out. This is primarily because the squatter problem has. not been comprehensively understood or defined.

The objective of this study is therefore to find a comprehensive definition of the squatter problem, with specific reference to Bangkok, in Thailand, and to recommend workable principles as a basis for their control and progressive elimination.

Proper reorganization of squatter control mechanisms can contribute to the orderly spatial growth in the city; and will promote the …

The Tiger's Back "A Report On Australian Organizations For Metropolitan Planning Administration", Robert D. Kuzelka

Conservation and Survey Division

The Australian town planning scene presents many interesting and unusual aspects to the city planner from the United States of America. Aspects which because of familiarity and proximity may not strike the Australian town planner as being either interesting, or unusual. This report will discuss some of these aspects as they seem to be affecting each major metropolitan region which includes the capital city in each of the six Australian States. Throughout the report, "metropolitan region" refers to the unit, or units of Local Government which are included in the planning area of each organization which is considered in this …

Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne Jan 1968

Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Urban land uses are rapidly converting open land into intensively used land. Generally, in planning those uses, a comprehensive study has included everything except an evaluation of the land in three dimensions. Geologists are eminently well equipped to supply the missing data, but they must also be aware of the needs of the urban community and the kinds of information needed by planners if they are to write reports usable by planners. Urban and environmental geology is a newly expanding field in the use of geologic data to help solve some urban problems in the planning stage. It is likely …

The Existing Space In Nebraska Multistory Square Farm Houses, Jerre Lewis Withrow, Florence Mckinney

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The present study was made by the University of Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station to determine the extent of similarity in the plans of one particular style of house, the square house of more than one story. Patterns of remodeling will be developed if the similarity of existing houses justifies such a project. The two story square house was chosen for study because it is one of the predominant old style houses still in existence throughout the North Central Region.

A High Peak of Architectural Progress

Some little while ago there appeared on this page a saying to the effect that progress is a blind succession of events fully exposed only through the agency of a capable interpreter. This issue of American Architect is proof of that contention. The Nebraska State Capitol—to which the issue is entirely devoted—is much more than an excellent example of unusual monumental design or even a symbol of democratic government. It marks an important period in the history of building progress. In many ways the architectural genius of Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue dramatized in this design …

Dairy Barn And Milk House Arrangement, J. H. Frandsen, W. B. Nevens Oct 1919

Dairy Barn And Milk House Arrangement, J. H. Frandsen, W. B. Nevens

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

From an economic point of view, as well as from the standpoint of animal comfort, it is highly desirable that adequate barn or shed facilities be provided for the dairy herd. Some farmers have developed the idea that to keep cows healthy and comfortable and to produce sanitary milk it is absolutely necessary to have expensive barns. As a matter of fact, many of the dairy barns where sanitation is the primary object are quite inexpensive. On the other hand, if the barn is conveniently arranged and made to embody the most accepted sanitary features, it is very essential that …
