Climate, Margot Mcdonald

Architecture

Cal Poly Lands located in San Luis Obispo County experience a collection of idyllic microclimates due to their geographical position relative to the Irish Hills and San Luis Range to the south and west, and the Santa Lucia Range to the east. These ridges create sheltered valleys that retard the persistent summer coastal fog common to neighboring communities to the west and the wide seasonal temperature variations of the Salinas and San Joaquin Valley north of the Cuesta Grade.

Physical And Digital Media Strategies For Exploring "Imagined" Realities Of Space, Skin And Light, Thomas Fowler, Iv, Brook Muller Jan 2002

Physical And Digital Media Strategies For Exploring "Imagined" Realities Of Space, Skin And Light, Thomas Fowler, Iv, Brook Muller

Architecture

This paper will discuss an unconventional methodology for using physical and digital media strategies in a tightly structured framework for the integration of Environmental Control Systems (ECS) principles into a third year design studio. An interchangeable use of digital media and physical material enabled architectural explorations of rich tactile and luminous engagement.

The principles that provide the foundation for integrative strategies between a design studio and building technology course spring from the Bauhaus tradition where a systematic approach to craftsmanship and visual perception is emphasized. Focusing particularly on color, light, texture and materials, Josef Albers explored the assemblage of found …

Post-Occupancy Presidio: How Lighting And Energy Design Goals Compare To Performance For The Thoreau Center For Sustainability, Margot Mcdonald Jun 1998

Post-Occupancy Presidio: How Lighting And Energy Design Goals Compare To Performance For The Thoreau Center For Sustainability, Margot Mcdonald

Architecture

The National Park Service was intent on creating a model "green" development at the decommissioned Presidio military base in San Francisco. Two local firms, Community Equity Builders and Tanner Leddy Maytum Stacy (TLMS) Architects forged a partnership which led to one of the first successful historic rehabilitation since the base conversion. Their efforts transformed the turn-of- the-century Letterman Hospital into the Thoreau Center for Sustainability where energy and resource conservation are at the forefront of the building design and operation. The building complex, now occupied for over two years, has been well-documented as a green building and historic rehabilitation project …

Sustainable Community Planning: Lessons From The Netherlands, Margot Mcdonald

Architecture

In 1990, the Dutch Government adopted a national plan to develop integrated and comprehensive policies that would respond on a national, regional, and local level to the need for improved environmental quality for the welfare of current and future generations. The program, called the National Environmental Policy Plan (NEPP), represented a bold effort to develop cooperation and shared responsibility between the public and private sectors setting goals for reduced energy consumption, resource utilization, and improved environmental quality including the reduction of SO2, NOx, and CO2 emissions. This paper reports on key elements of the NEPP …

Expanding The Boundaries Of Architectural Education: Making A Path To Sustainable Communities, Margot Mcdonald Apr 1996

Expanding The Boundaries Of Architectural Education: Making A Path To Sustainable Communities, Margot Mcdonald

Architecture

Architectural education offers students practice with complex problem-solving, most often separate from the public they will eventually serve. Design education that addresses real clients and real world concerns such as renewable energy and resources, social equity and environmental justice, and economic feasibility demands the skills of coordination, communication, vision, and leadership different from conventional architectural education. This paper outlines an innovative university curriculum that moves in the direction of educating architects as community leaders based on sustainable design and the concept of community in every aspect of the teaching model. Specifically, the teaching model creates an interactive group dynamic in …

Asian American And African American Environments, Bradford Grant, Christopher L. Yip Jan 1996

Asian American And African American Environments, Bradford Grant, Christopher L. Yip

Architecture

This course explores the history, aesthetics and development of Asian American and African American places, and views them from the perspective of their subcultural environmental patterns. It focuses on how patterns of living among these groups are developed and represented in the environment. The course explores the intersection of environmental design and cultural studies which suggests that ethical, social and cultural considerations are as important as material and technique in the creation of environments. The goal is to develop an appreciation of the role of ethnic diversity in shaping and giving meaning to the built environment.

Csumb: Military Base Conversion As An Opportunity For Sustainable Design, Margot Mcdonald, Polly Cooper, Ken Haggard Jul 1995

Csumb: Military Base Conversion As An Opportunity For Sustainable Design, Margot Mcdonald, Polly Cooper, Ken Haggard

Architecture

The conversion of military bases around the country creates an imperative to infuse social, economic, and environmental vitality back into the affected region. Fort Ord in Monterey County, a recent casualty of base closures, is being turned into an opportunity for adaptive reuse as it undergoes the transformation from an army base to a magnet campus for the California State University (CSU) system. The CSU Monterey Bay (CSUMB) campus visionaries included sustainability as a priority in the base conversion. To achieve this goal, the university hired a team of sustainable design consultants. This paper reports on the outcomes of the …

Los Osos, California: A Proposal For A Sustainable Community With A Sustainable Watershed, Margot Mcdonald, Jennifer Rennick Jun 1994

Los Osos, California: A Proposal For A Sustainable Community With A Sustainable Watershed, Margot Mcdonald, Jennifer Rennick

Architecture

In January 1993, the American Institute of Architects and the International Union of Architects announced the "Sustainable Community Solutions" ideas competition. This paper describes principles and concepts illustrated in an award winning design competition entry based in Los Osos, California. The focus of this entry is the transformation of a suburban bedroom community on the California coast into a vital ecological city designed around its watershed. This paper outlines sustainable design strategies that encompass the full spectrum of environmental design issues at the full range of scales; global, bioregional, regional, site, building, and component as proposed by the design team.

The Chalet As Archetype: The Bungalow, The Picturesque Tradition And Vernacular Form, Bruno Giberti Oct 1991

The Chalet As Archetype: The Bungalow, The Picturesque Tradition And Vernacular Form, Bruno Giberti

Architecture

The history of the Swiss chalet is a history of recycled form. This paper considers the nature of the chalet as a vernacular building type, its appropriation beginning in the eighteenth century within picturesque theory and high-style architecture in England and America, and its eventual return to the vernacular in the form of the early-twentieth-century bungalow.

The goal of the paper is to explore the process by which specific vernacular forms may become integrated into more generalized styles of building. Special attention is paid to identifying the archetypal chalet elements in the high-style work of architects Charles and Henry Greene, …

Review Of John A. Walker "Design History And The History Of Design" And Peter Dormer "The Meanings Of Modern Design", Bruno Giberti Jan 1991

Review Of John A. Walker "Design History And The History Of Design" And Peter Dormer "The Meanings Of Modern Design", Bruno Giberti

Architecture

The history of design is not a new subject. It has been the theme of two well-known if not always well-loved pillars of the historical literature, Nikolaus Pevsner's Pioneers of the Modern Movement (1936) and Sigfried Giedion's Mechanization Takes Command (1948). In contrast, design history is a relatively new discipline, well established in Britain but still forming in this country. The time is right, then, for a book like Design History and the History of Design, in which John A. Walker surveys the landscape of this field for its students.

A Shred Of Evidence On Theories Of Wage Stickiness, Alan S. Blinder, Don Choi Nov 1990

A Shred Of Evidence On Theories Of Wage Stickiness, Alan S. Blinder, Don Choi

Architecture

A small interview survey was undertaken to see how actual wage-setters would react to the central ideas of several economic theories of wage stickiness. Wage cuts were surprisingly prevalent in recent years, despite the booming economy. The strongest finding was that managers believe that perceptions of fairness play a major motivational role in labor markets and that a "fair" wage policy is a good deal more complicated than simply not cutting wages. We also found substantial evidence for money illusion and against the adverse-selection version of the efficiency wage model.

Portable, Linear-Focused Solar Thermal Energy Collecting System, James C. Fletcher, Charles G. Miller, Jens G. Pohl Oct 1977

Portable, Linear-Focused Solar Thermal Energy Collecting System, James C. Fletcher, Charles G. Miller, Jens G. Pohl

Architecture

A solar heat collection system is provided by utilizing a line-focusing device that is effectively a cylindrically curved concentrator within a protected environment formed by a transparent inflatable casing. A target, such as a fluid or gas carrying conduit is positioned within or near the casing containing the concentrator, at the line focus of the concentrator. The casing can be inflated at the site of use by a low pressure air supply to form a unitary light-weight structure. When deflated, the collector, including casing, concentrator and target, is readily transportable. A system constructed from a plurality of such line-focusing devices …

Three-Dimensional Tracking Solar Energy Concentrator And Method For Making Same, James C. Fletcher, Charles G. Miller, Jens G. Pohl Sep 1977

Three-Dimensional Tracking Solar Energy Concentrator And Method For Making Same, James C. Fletcher, Charles G. Miller, Jens G. Pohl

Architecture

A tracking three-dimensional solar energy concentrator is provided by a stretched aluminized polymeric membrane supported by a hoop, the polymeric membrane being formed to a desired curvature by differential loading. The loading on the polymeric membrane determines its curvature. The loading can be varied by utilizing a plastic membrane that has a non-uniform radial distribution of thickness with uniform differential pressure or by applying a non-uniform differential pressure on a membrane having uniform thickness. Reflector membranes having a non-uniform radial distribution of thickness can be obtained by selective spraying of a dissolved plastic such as Krylon on the underside of …
