Transcend: A Thin-Shell Japanese Onsen Experience, James Douglas Blanchard, Nicholas Michael Horaney, Hunter Thomas Mosier, Lillian Cao, Cory Peterman

Architectural Engineering

This project is an interdisciplinary architectural design of a funicular Japanese onsen utilizing the compressive strength of thin-shell concrete. A section of this project was also built to scale on the Cal Poly campus in the Architectural Engineering department's High Bay facility. This project was designed utilizing Rhinoceros and analyzed using SAP 2000 19.

Gns Weed Housing, Galen Amick, Sarah Pascual

Architectural Engineering

GNS requested assistance from Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design to design a new housing complex for the site. In response, Cal Poly formulated an interdisciplinary course comprised of architecture, construction management, and architectural engineering students. The class is based around the concept of Interdisciplinary Product Delivery (IPD), which allows for a cohesive melding of disciplines that fosters a holistic and efficient design process. Our team consisted of two architectural engineering students, two architecture students, and one construction management student. Before the design began, our team put together a list of goals and objectives for the project, which …

Structural Calculations For A Library In The Dominican Republic With Mission Twentyfive35, Erika Dileva Dec 2017

Structural Calculations For A Library In The Dominican Republic With Mission Twentyfive35, Erika Dileva

Architectural Engineering

The Amoveo Group in collaboration with Mission TwentyFive35 focuses on the northern region of the Dominican Republic, “El Cibao”, to share the Gospel and plant churches by implementing a sustainable solution that addresses the community’s four needs. Mission TwentyFive35 identifies the lack of clean water, food sustainability shortcomings, limited access to primary healthcare and education, and the absence of technical and vocational job training as the primary contributors to these extremely impoverished communities.

This project provides structural calculations for a library within Mission TwentyFive35’s vocational campus near Santiago, Dominican Republic. In partnership with a nonprofit humanitarian organization called Journeyman International, …

Mano De La Amistad: A Thin Shell Concrete Structure Designed For The People Of Havana, Cuba, Peter Aster, Marta Blachowicz-Scott, Aaron Cook, Alex Erler, Elizabeth Townsend, Ger Yang Jun 2017

Mano De La Amistad: A Thin Shell Concrete Structure Designed For The People Of Havana, Cuba, Peter Aster, Marta Blachowicz-Scott, Aaron Cook, Alex Erler, Elizabeth Townsend, Ger Yang

Architectural Engineering

In designing a thin shell structure to cover the performance space on Tribuna Anti Imperialista Jose Marti, in Havana, Cuba, we developed a heavily symbolic concept and further abstracted it to reach our design. Basing the concept on the quote to the right by Obama about US and Cuba relations, we wanted our design to be representative of a hand that works to adjoin the plaza to the US Embassy which is directly west of the site. The “wrist” portion adds an asymmetric element, while the fingers provide a backdrop to the performers as well as a view through to …

Implementing Subspace Identification On Shake Table Model, Zoe T. Cooperband Jun 2017

Implementing Subspace Identification On Shake Table Model, Zoe T. Cooperband

Architectural Engineering

Stochastic Subspace Identification is a field of applied mathematics that takes collected experimental time-history data and gives out information about the system that produced the data. SSI is typically used in control analysis but here we apply the methods to the modal analysis of structures. This senior project didn’t involve theory - instead much of the work was in research behind how Subspace Identification works, implementing the algorithm in MATLAB, and applying the program to shake table data to validate the program. In other words, building the framework to make SSI a usable tool and practical learning experience for other …

The Ginkgo Shell, Mark Luzi, Karla Santos, Josh Cannon, Erika Davis, Nora Villanueva Jun 2017

The Ginkgo Shell, Mark Luzi, Karla Santos, Josh Cannon, Erika Davis, Nora Villanueva

Architectural Engineering

The overall concept for this outdoor concrete shell structure, located in Furstliche Park in Inzigkofen, Germany, is derived from an abstracted ginkgo leaf. Drawing on inspiration from a poem about the two parts of the ginkgo leaf becoming one, we took the approach of combining both the natural and built environment into one cohesive piece. To connect the two, it was imperative that we place the shell on the site as to have the smallest impact. With a small portion of the overall site used, the unoccupied space further enhances the natural environment. Creating a literal design connection between the …

Shrinkage Cracking In Concrete Tilt-Up Construction, Stewart Hooks, Jack Robinson Jun 2017

Shrinkage Cracking In Concrete Tilt-Up Construction, Stewart Hooks, Jack Robinson

Architectural Engineering

The purpose of this project is to investigate a particular, undesirable cracking pattern in concrete tilt-up panels that, until now, did not have a known definite cause. The cause of this cracking pattern is hypothesized to be due to shrinkage restraint of the concrete panels. The cracking under investigation occurs at the bottom corners of the Tilt-Up panels, suggesting that the base of the panel is restrained from shrinkage. This project models various components of Tilt-Up Construction that have potential for restraining the panels from shrinking. This project consists of the following main components.

The first aspect of this project …

Modular House Revival, Kevin Chiang, Spencer Dilley, Sarah Dowthwaite, Trevor Houghton, Ryan Lefebvre, Michele Leung, Cameron Lober, Chris Martinez, Katie Mayer

Architectural Engineering

The Modular House, located in Poly Canyon, has seen extensive damage since the last caretaker left nearly ten years ago. To prevent further damage and improve the safety and appeal of the structure, we are proposing a renovation of the existing building that removes the existing cladding and partitions. By the end of Spring Quarter 2017, the Modular House will have a guardrail system replacing the wood paneling on the walls and a new steel composite deck to replace the current flooring system. The structural steel framing system will remain as is.

Polaris, Dennise M. Manalo, Andy Do, Emilio Lozano, Mackenzie Stickney

Architectural Engineering

The project explores the relationship between the architecture and the engineering behind thin-shelled concrete structures. Initially, hanging chain models were used to observe pure compression; then, this model was improved upon using software like Rhinocerus, AutoCAD. From AutoCAD, the model was imported into SAP2000 for analysis.

Structural Calculations For Tia Ana's Sustainable Development, Danielle Rustagi Jun 2016

Structural Calculations For Tia Ana's Sustainable Development, Danielle Rustagi

Architectural Engineering

Tia Ana’s Sustainable Development is located in the El Salvadorian countryside, just outside of the capital city San Salvador. Currently, Tia Ana’s is located in the city of San Salvador, where there is little room for the children and a significant amount of violence and instability. In order to make the relocation of the orphanage feasible financially, a portion of the countryside landscape will contain a small hotel and numerous small dwellings nested in the tropical surroundings. By relocating the orphanage to the countryside, the children housed by Tia Ana will experience a safer and more stable environment and this …
