The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) has been dedicated to exposing undergraduate students to the wide range of interdisciplinary subjects related to earthquake engineering through the Seismic Design Competition. In 2022, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) sent 14 students to Salt Lake City, Utah for the competition – to compete with 31 other teams who all tackled the competition problem statement uniquely. ARCE 401 Fire Protection is a class that will finally give ARCE students an introduction to fire-resilience and its major importance in the structural and planning spheres. The class would have a structural emphasis along with interdisciplinary qualities, unlike the graduate classes offered in the CE and ME departments. ARCE 401 covers a broad spectrum of topics and is meant to bring ARCE students closer to a comprehensive understanding of the overall work environment.

Journeyman International is a non-profit company that coordinates the design and construction of humanitarian projects between architecture, architectural engineering, and construction management students in order to build impactful projects in developing nations at a minimal cost. One of these projects is Kwitunga: a Women’s Cooperative and Opportunity Center in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. GNS requested assistance from Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design to design a new housing complex for the site. In response, Cal Poly formulated an interdisciplinary course comprised of architecture, construction management, and architectural engineering students. The class is based around the concept of Interdisciplinary Product Delivery (IPD), which allows for a cohesive melding of disciplines that fosters a holistic and efficient design process.
