The Family, Political Theory, And Ideology: A Comparative Study Of John Stuart Mill And Friedrich Engels, David M. Murray Jr.
The Family, Political Theory, And Ideology: A Comparative Study Of John Stuart Mill And Friedrich Engels, David M. Murray Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This project is concerned with the development of the Christian family in Europe and how its sociological and historical characteristics informed the writings of John Stuart Mill and Friedrich Engels. The term “Christian family” refers to the dominant form of the family seen in Western Europe, namely the atomistic nuclear family. The sociological and ideological foundations of the family are explored to provide context for the writings of John Stuart Mill and Friedrich Engels that utilize the concept of the family for their political projects. Both wrote critically about the state of the family in their lifetimes, particularly in regard …

Rape Culture: Tools Of Oppression, William Wehrs
Rape Culture: Tools Of Oppression, William Wehrs
History Honors Papers
My project deals with rape culture and the tools of oppression. It looks at the history of rape culture from biblical times to the present. It then examines how schools indoctrinate people to participate in rape culture. It then moves to a backlash towards feminism from the 1970s to the present. The paper then connects said backlash to Men’s Activist Websites. Finally, my paper examines rape culture in the Media, such as the James Bond films or the video game, Super Seducer.

History, Security, And Peace: A Comparison Of Sectarian Conflicts In Northern Ireland And The Middle East, Ahmed I. Hamed, Noah Chamberlain Spicer
Student Symposium
“The Troubles,” a violent conflict that began in Northern Ireland in 1968 and lasted until the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, saw high levels of violence and terrorism on both sides--Protestants and Catholics--of the socio-political conflict. While major issues of violence were addressed by the Good Friday Agreement, many key ontological issues remain very much alive and active, resulting in “peace walls” which separate Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods in Northern Ireland. The impediments to peace stem not just from these issues of violence, but also from the minimal attention paid to ontological security in peace negotiations: the security of oneself, …

What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha
What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
The word “frontier” brings to mind certain connotations. The American public might think of Davy Crockett and his trademark coonskin cap, or of what came to be known as the Indian Wars as Americans pushed farther and farther west, conquering the rivers, plains, and mountains that lay just beyond colonial reach. But what was a frontier fort really like at the turn of the 19th Century? This paper explores that question through the study of archaeological artifacts left behind by the inhabitants of Fort Steuben. The fort, constructed in 1787, in what is now Steubenville, Ohio, was home to early …

Gunslinger Roland From Yeats’S Towers Came(?): A Little-Studied Influence On Stephen King’S Dark Tower Series, Abigail L. Montgomery
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
This essay has two major goals. Its general aim is to join the growing body of scholarship that takes Stephen King’s work seriously as literature in its own right and in conversation with other, traditionally canonical, works. This essay specifically does so by examining the apparent, though unreferenced, influence of William Butler Yeats’s poems “The Tower” and “The Black Tower” on King’s longest, strangest, most challenging and most self-referential work—the Dark Tower series. King references Yeats elsewhere in his fiction, and a rich, non-linear intertextuality connects the Dark Tower series to much of the rest of King’s work. Taking this …

Canadian Nursing Students’ Experiences With Medical Assistance In Dying / Les Expériences D’Étudiantes En Sciences Infirmières Au Regard De L’Aide Médicale À Mourir, Cedar Mcmechan, Anne Bruce, Rosanne Beuthin
Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
The recent introduction of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) has significant implications for healthcare workers, nurse educators, and society at large. Nursing students are being asked to participate directly or indirectly with a medically assisted death. Little is known about nursing students’ experiences with or attitudes toward MAiD in Canada. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of fourth-year nursing students in caring for patients who choose MAiD. The aim was to understand students’ perceptions of their educational preparation regarding MAiD and identify potential gaps in existing knowledge and skills. A qualitative design and thematic analysis were used. …

Whistleblowing In The Irish Military: The Cost Of Exposing Bullying And Sexual Harassment, John Hogan, Sharon Feeney, Grace Flynn
Articles
Whistleblowing has gained increasing media attention over the past 40 years, as incidents of abuse and wrongdoing associated with businesses, religious institutions, the media and politics have come to light. In this article, we investigate the consequences of a military whistleblower’s actions for both himself and the military institution that he was a part of. The case concerns former army officer Dr. Tom Clonan and his findings concerning the bullying and sexual harassment of female personnel in the Irish Defence Forces at the turn of the century. As these revelations came to light over 17 years ago we are able …

Becoming Biculturally Competent
an Autoethnographic Journey of a Güera Woman
Bernadette Hall-Cuarón
ABSTRACT
This dissertation represents a personalized account of my lived experiences and analytically describes the autoethnographic and qualitative processes of bicultural development and bicultural competency. My autoethnographic study advocates that cultural self-reflection allows for an accurate determination of one’s cultural-self and more importantly provides an instrumental passageway to cultural awareness, bicultural awareness, and proposedly bicultural competency.
Through the implementation of this qualitative research method, I explored my role as the subject, researcher, and narrator of this autoethnographic examination. This bicultural autoethnography necessitated attending to the details of genuine …

Red, Why, And Blue: A Study Of Upstate Local Politics, Derek Weng
Proceedings of GREAT Day
The American political process is established upon a self-adjusting mechanism that weathers down opposing factions and streamlines myriad needs to form a cohesive solution that best addresses the public good. The State of New York is an exceptional place where geographic, economic social, and political diversity coexist in polarizing camps and distinctive patterns. This paper touches upon one of the most significant division in state politics today- the often contentious divide between the heavily Republican upstate and the solidly Democratic downstate. The purpose of this paper is to search for an casual explanation in how the lack of a competitive two …

Interview Of Rosanna Mastrangelo, Rosanna Mastrangelo, Juliana Mastrangelo
All Oral Histories
The Interviewee:
Rosanna Mastrangelo was born in February 1964, in South Philadelphia. Her parents, along with the rest of her family, were Italian immigrants who had come to America after the end of World War II in hopes of rebuilding a better life for themselves. Raised in a tight-knit Italian neighborhood and surrounded by Old World traditions, Rosanna quickly realized the importance of remaining close to one’s roots, especially in forming her unique sense of identity. But as she went to school and became acquainted with people of other backgrounds and experiences, it became ever more clear that her sense …
