The Influence Of Favorable Context On Questionnaire Response, John M. Peterson
The Influence Of Favorable Context On Questionnaire Response, John M. Peterson
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Previous research has shown that the responses to items in a test of the affective domain are not affected by context when the items are embedded in different random subtests. Other studies in the affective domain show that the mean responses of items are influenced by the favorableness item compositions of the subtests. In multiple matrix samples, subtests of an entire test are taken by subgroups of a population. The influence of favorableness item composition on the total score of a given dimension in the affective domain has not been studied. This study offers evidence toward the following questions: (1) …
Studies On Atp-Dependent Co2 Fixation By Desulfovibrio Vulgaris, Maria Alvarez H.
Studies On Atp-Dependent Co2 Fixation By Desulfovibrio Vulgaris, Maria Alvarez H.
Biology ETDs
Cell-free extracts and whole cell suspensions of Desulfovibrio vulgaris were employed to examine the fixation of 14CO2 into acid stable material. Moderate levels of CO2 fixation occured in the presence of ribulose-1,5-diphosphate, ribose-5-phosphate or pyruvate with only minimal levels of CO2 fixation occuring with formate, malate, or succinate. The fixation of CO2 in the presence of pyruvate was attributed to the pyruvate-CO2 exchange reaction. This exchange reaction was dependent on the presence of an acidic protein fraction but was not stimulated by the additions of ATP to the reaction mixture. The fixation of CO …
Manuel Alvarez, Empire Builder Of The Southwest, Thomas E. Chavez
Manuel Alvarez, Empire Builder Of The Southwest, Thomas E. Chavez
History ETDs
Manuel Alvarez was an influential figure in American expansion. A native Spaniard, he was in Mexico during the events leading to Mexican Independence. In 1824 he went to New Mexico via New York. At Santa Fe he opened a store which he would operate for the rest of his life. At the same time he became active in the fur trading business and, in 1828 tried trapping. As a trapper with the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, Alvarez was quickly promoted to captain. He led forty other trappers to the present Yellowstone National Park, thus becoming one of the first men …
A Proof Of Convergence For The Tridiagonal Ql Algorithm In Floating-Point Arithmetic, James George Sanderson
A Proof Of Convergence For The Tridiagonal Ql Algorithm In Floating-Point Arithmetic, James George Sanderson
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Numerous routines are available to find the eigenvalues of a real symmetric tridiagonal matrix. Since it is known to converge in exact arithmetic, the tridiagonal QL algorithm with origin shift is widely used. Here we analyze the algorithm in floating-point arithmetic. This analysis suggests two modifications to the EISPACK implementation TQLl that enable one to prove correctness and hence convergence of the routine.
Also, it is known that the implicit and explicit versions of the QL algorithm produce the same results in exact arithmetic. A counter-example to the floating-point analog of this theorem is presented.
Design Of A Microprocessor Controlled Telecommunication System, George J. Maroutsos
Design Of A Microprocessor Controlled Telecommunication System, George J. Maroutsos
Dissertations and Theses
Recent advancements in Large Scale Integration Technology have made available devices, such as microprocessors, analog gates and "three state" logic, that provide the designer with a wide range of possibilities in the design of telecommunication systems. A microprocessor and analog gates are utilized in this design to demonstrate the feasibility of implementing a flexible Telecommunication System. The microprocessor is programmed to control, through software, the system functions. The feasibility of systems highly adaptable to the needs of individual subscribers is thus demonstrated.
Parody And Transcription In The B-Minor Mass, David Woolard
Parody And Transcription In The B-Minor Mass, David Woolard
Honors Theses
Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B Minor is not entirely an original work. Eleven of the twenty-five moments were either borrowed from Bach's earlier cantatas or were transcribed from the Mass into later choral works. In the process of borrowing, Bach often made significant changes in the original composition. In the preparation of this paper, each parody movement in the Mass was compared with the work from which it was drawn or, in four cases, the work drawn from it. Variants between the model and the parody were written down and classified. The resulting categories suggest insights into Bach's reasons …
The Development Of Graphic Tools For The Calculation Of Solar Radiation, Edward Mazria
The Development Of Graphic Tools For The Calculation Of Solar Radiation, Edward Mazria
Architecture and Planning ETDs
World-wide dwindling energy resources have provided the incentive to use solar energy systems to supply a major portion of a building’s heating requirements. In order to understand and be responsive to the effects of the sun on the location and design of solar systems, it is necessary to know at any moment the sun's position in the sky and energy intensity on a given surface. The Cylindrical sun chart, developed in this thesis, provides a simple and convenient way to accurately predict the sun's movement across the sky from any point in the continental United States. By plotting obstructions directly …
Investigation Of Fast Interface States In Mosfets Using A Pulsed Field Effect Technique, Anthony E. Giraudo
Investigation Of Fast Interface States In Mosfets Using A Pulsed Field Effect Technique, Anthony E. Giraudo
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This thesis is the culmination of an investigation into the pulsed field effect technique. Basically, the pulsed field effect technique is a measurement of the surface conductance of a semiconductor under the influence of a transverse electric field. The pulsed field effect has been used to investigate surface states and interface states at the silicon surface. The nature of this technique allows it to be used in analyzing the metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). Specifically, the investigation has been to determine if the pulsed field effect technique could be used to investigate fast interface states which are located at the …
Little Epics: More Lively And Choleric, Nancy Conrad Martinez
Little Epics: More Lively And Choleric, Nancy Conrad Martinez
English Language and Literature ETDs
The number and diversity of works in the mock-heroic mode have long made meaningful discussion difficult. The mode has been and continues to be a glittering, shapeless mass, obscuring all but the brightest or best-known stars in its blur of confused origins, purposes, and relationships. Setting down useful boundaries for one variety of mockheroic, the little epic, is the purpose of this study. Represented most notably by MacFlecknoe, The Dispensary, The Rape of the Lock, and The Dunciad, the little epic constitutes a small but dazzling genre that perfects the mode and epitomizes an age.
The theory of …
Stimulus-Sampling And Encoding Variability, Brian C. Babbitt
Stimulus-Sampling And Encoding Variability, Brian C. Babbitt
Psychology ETDs
A recent formulation has incorporated encoding variability in a stimulus-sampling framework. This conceptualization suggests that an active sample of "encoding operators" encodes each stimulus. On subsequent presentations of the stimulus each operator is checked for a tag/no tag representing the use of that operator in encoding the stimulus. These assumptions produce binomial distributions of noise and signal + noise underlying recognition performance. The present experiment tested the forms of the underlying distributions in the context change situation. Three amounts of context change between training and testing were investigated, with results indicating that recognition performance decreased as amount of context change …

Cardiorespiratory Responses To Submaximal Exercise In Water, Karen Ann Carlberg
Cardiorespiratory Responses To Submaximal Exercise In Water, Karen Ann Carlberg
Biology ETDs
Maximal oxygen consumption is consistently lower when measured during swimming than during running or bicycling. A number of factors could contribute to this difference, including size of active muscle mass, body position, heat exchange mechanisms, breathing patterns and adjustments to water immersion.
In this study, the effects of water immersion on submaximal exercise were isolated by having subjects perform identical work in air and water. The exercise consisted of rowing on a rowing machine, with rate of movement controlled so that the subjects always worked at the same relative workload and oxygen consumption. To compare the physiological responses to exercise …
The Effects Of Tsh And Culture Conditions On Nucleic Acid Synthesis In Thyroid Cells In Vitro, David J. Orlicky
The Effects Of Tsh And Culture Conditions On Nucleic Acid Synthesis In Thyroid Cells In Vitro, David J. Orlicky
Biology ETDs
Cells enzymatically dispersed from ovine thyroid tissue were cultured in Ham's F-10 medium supplemented with 8.33% Fetal Calf Serum and 8.33% Lamb Serum. Cultures were maintained in a humidified 37° C incubator having a 5% CO2 - 95% air atmosphere. At 48 hours post isolation, cell culture medium was replaced and experiments begun. Altering the serum content (between 4.76 - 16.66%) of the nutrient medium had little effect upon either DNA content or 3H-thyrnidine incorporation into DNA. Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) seemed to have a stablizing effect upon DNA content (between 0 and 7 days post TSH addition), and …
Notes On The Formation Of A Photographic Aesthetic In Great Britain, 1839-1890, Philip R. Flower
Notes On The Formation Of A Photographic Aesthetic In Great Britain, 1839-1890, Philip R. Flower
Art & Art History ETDs
The thesis examines the development of a coherent photographic aesthetic in Great Britain during the 19th century. It proceeds from the idea that the history of photography during this period should be viewed as a series of formal approaches to the problem of how best to utilise the medium; both for the production of art and also for the dissemination of specific information. These two uses of the medium are not seen as being mutually exclusive of one another. The thesis advances the idea that both these genres of photography offer evidence of formal attitudes towards the medium itself, which …
The Contemporary Shaman, Harry Alvin Paynter Jr.
The Contemporary Shaman, Harry Alvin Paynter Jr.
Art & Art History ETDs
Craft design and fine art have been considered unrelated fields since the Renaissance. In the ensuing four hundred years the field of craft design had been debased by commercialism to the extent that art or artistic expression were moot points to the craftsman. In the later half of the twentieth century, however, a new Renaissance is taking place in the field of crafts. As a jeweler and an artist my work is part of the Craft Renaissance movement. The body of work presented here is created in the style of mystical artifacts and its roots are in non-industrial, non-western primitive …
Approaches To Composition In Selected Directing Texts: A Structural Analysis And Assessment, Kathryn C. Dodele
Approaches To Composition In Selected Directing Texts: A Structural Analysis And Assessment, Kathryn C. Dodele
Dissertations and Theses
Directing texts are inadequate in their various approaches to teaching the concepts of stage-composition. The goal of this thesis was to show that, for an approach to stage composition to be judged adequate, it must systematically provide the student of directing with a firm grounding in design and compositional principles as they relate to the total stage picture.
Nineteen texts were studied and their presentations of compositional principles were analyzed. Eight texts are included in an in-depth structural analysis. The texts analyzed are Fundamentals of Play Directing by Alexander Dean, The Art of Play Production by John Dolman, Play Direction …

The Role Of Cognitive Differentiation In Conceptual Systems Theory, Mary Flume
The Role Of Cognitive Differentiation In Conceptual Systems Theory, Mary Flume
Student Work
A cognitive approach to theory and research in personality proposes that individuals develop relatively enduring cognitive schemas for experiencing and organizing their .social world. Cognitive schemas are templates through which information is filtered or transformed.
It may be understood that cognitive personality theory emphasises the structure of cognition rather than its content. Such an emphasis is based on the assumption that structural variables are relatively enduring and invariant across situations, whereas the content of personality is expected to fluctuate markedly. Cognitive personality theory should provide the researcher with an efficient basis for describing the actions of a person and lead …

Prior to a lineup one week later, only 51 subjects (N = 145) failed to' recall either the number and/or the sex of the persons encountered, while only 28. correctly recalled both the number and sex and that it was two different persons in each encounter. Results from the lineup confirmed, previous suggestions that subjects (N = 155) are better able …
The United States And Malaya: 1945-1953, Joseph W. White Ii
The United States And Malaya: 1945-1953, Joseph W. White Ii
Student Work
Historical investigation is a self-justifying effort. The discovery of the forgotten event or a different view of a circumstance or condition contributes to the total body of knowledge and needs no further defense. However, in this instance, there is a benefit in briefly tracing the ruminations that lead to this particular study. In short, the historical significance of the post-World War II American-Malayan relationship is hardly self-evident. The obvious questions: why this subject and wherein lies the value?
Nebraska And Rural Electrification Through 1940, Roberta K. Barndt
Nebraska And Rural Electrification Through 1940, Roberta K. Barndt
Student Work
Since Nebraska is primarily an agricultural state, the struggle to bring electricity to its rural areas played an important role in the long-standing battle to decrease the disparity between living standards in rural and urban America. During the first two decades of the twentieth century, telephones and automobiles lessened rural isolation while increased utilization of tractors and other technological innovations rendered farm labor less tedious. Nevertheless, without electricity, the one modern innovation that more than any other brought comfort and convenience within the reach of the urban masses, living and working conditions on the farm remained comparatively primitive. Farm families …
A Historical Study Of The Chap Program In The United States Air Force, Ruth A. Harrington
A Historical Study Of The Chap Program In The United States Air Force, Ruth A. Harrington
Student Work
Life in the military for most, families is an interesting and enjoyable experience. It offers an opportunity to make many friends, meet interesting people, travel to new places, and live in foreign countries. For the family with a handicapped child these advantages can turn into disadvantages and be an additional area for concern. Frequent moves, long separations, and the strangeness of new communities can cause worry and apprehension. Not knowing what is available for their special child at the next duty station can lead to additional stress and lower the morale of the family.

The Development Of A Comprehensive Long Range Plan To Determine The Financial Facility And Program Needs For The Iowa School For The Deaf Council Bluffs, Iowa, Norman Keith Devine
Student Work
Everyone concerned, including parents of deaf children, educators of the deaf, board members, legislators, and eventually the deaf person himself wants the same thing. That is the best possible education for each deaf child. In order to provide programs that will insure this end, there is a need for a well thought out long-range plan of action. Traditionally, long-range planning by schools has been concerned with certain quantitative aspects of operation: enrollment projections, facility needs, current income, current expenditures, and variations of these quantities. The emphasis in this study was that resource planning dominated attention.
A Study Of Basic Characteristics And Views Of Team Teaching Programs And The Expectations Of Elementary School Principals Currently Supervising Team Teaching, Joel G. Christiansen
A Study Of Basic Characteristics And Views Of Team Teaching Programs And The Expectations Of Elementary School Principals Currently Supervising Team Teaching, Joel G. Christiansen
Student Work
Traditionally, in Fremont, Nebraska, the elementary schools have been organized around self-contained classrooms. However, during the past year, efforts have been made in the Clarmar Elementary School to change this arrangement, and capitalize upon the special abilities and interests of the teachers in the intermediate grades. For example, in a fifth grade, one of the two teachers instructed both sections of math, while the other taught English. With this background experience, the fourth and fifth grade staff members concluded that the advantages of "team teaching" and the self-contained classroom should be incorporated into their instructional 1976-77 school year. Toward this …

Intrerconversion Of Replicative Forms Of Sindbis Virus Rna And The Electrophoresis Of Viral Rna, Jonathan D. Martin
Intrerconversion Of Replicative Forms Of Sindbis Virus Rna And The Electrophoresis Of Viral Rna, Jonathan D. Martin
Doctoral Dissertations
Three species of double-strand (ds) RNA, designated RF I, RF II, and RF III in order of decreasing size, were produced by RNase treatment of extracts of chicken embryo cells infected for 6 h with Sindbis virus. These species were identifiable with those reported by Simmons and Strauss (28). At a low level of enzyme (0.001 µg/ml) the major species obtained was RF I. When the enzyme concentration was increased 10-, 100, and 1000-fold, there was a progressive increase in the proportions of RF's II and III and a concurrent decrease in the proportion of RF I. Only RF I …
