The Influence Of Press Variables And The Measurement Of Show Through Of Paper, William Nourse Dec 1976

The Influence Of Press Variables And The Measurement Of Show Through Of Paper, William Nourse

Theses

Several fundamental questions are discussed relating to show through of ink on paper. These questions relate to (a) the significance of ink and press variables in regard to show through; (bj the correlation between the light reflectivity of an ink film thickness and the show through of the ink; (c) the correlation between the percentage of pigment in the ink, and the show through of ink; (d) the interchangeability of various instruments for the measurement of show through. Data is obtained using a standard offset ink in combination with several different kinds of paper. Several, different known ink film thicknesses …

Effects Of Polyox In Fountain Solution, Jacob Varughese Nov 1976

Effects Of Polyox In Fountain Solution, Jacob Varughese

Theses

"Polyox" is a polymer of ethylene oxide. It is soluble in water and commercially available. The effects of Polyox in fountain solutions were studied and evaluated. The same concentration (one-half percent of Polyox in water) at different pH and blending times, was tested for physical properties and printability. The physical property tests made were of viscosity, surface tension and contact angle. The printability tests were conducted as roll-up, ability to clean up the plate, resistance to scumming, printing sharpness and resolution properties. The experiments were conducted under controlled press conditions and the properties of each test solution were reported. Roll-up, …

Solution Of The Transonic Potential Flow Equation By Finite Differences For The Hydraulic Analogy, Ewan Choroszylow Aug 1976

Solution Of The Transonic Potential Flow Equation By Finite Differences For The Hydraulic Analogy, Ewan Choroszylow

Theses

A numerical procedure is presented for the solution of the transonic potential flow equation around an isolated airfoil, for the hydraulic analogy. The numerical method used was the finite difference method, appropriately modified for a mixed elliptichyperbolic system of equations. Potential flow analysis was used, since for all practical purposes, the flow is inviscid throughout the flow field, except for wake regions and boundaries. The mixed finite difference scheme has proven to be an effective technique in the solution of elliptic and hyperbolic flow problems. For conditions near the wave propagation velocity (sonic velocity), difficulties have arisen in proper solution …

A Study To Assess The Aesthetic And Economic Viability Of Producing Original Fine Art Prints And Autographic Artists Books On A Rotary Offset Press, And An Introduction To A New Medium For Creating And Producing Original Fine Art Prints And Autographic Artists Books, Daniel Richard Tucker Jun 1976

A Study To Assess The Aesthetic And Economic Viability Of Producing Original Fine Art Prints And Autographic Artists Books On A Rotary Offset Press, And An Introduction To A New Medium For Creating And Producing Original Fine Art Prints And Autographic Artists Books, Daniel Richard Tucker

Theses

This study investigates factors which the author believes could contribute to the determination of the aesthetic and economic viability of producing original fine art prints and artists books on a rotary offset press using direct imaged, uncoated lithographic plates. It also introduces a new medium for the creation and production of these works which was developed during this study. This investigation has been accomplished in the following ways: First, answers were sought to ten questions the author believed any artist considering the use of a rotary offset press as a means of producing these works would want to know. The …

A Quantitative Method Of Pre-Setting The Ink Distribution Keys Of An Offset Duplicator Using A Photoelectric Estimating Unit, Martin Marino Jun 1976

A Quantitative Method Of Pre-Setting The Ink Distribution Keys Of An Offset Duplicator Using A Photoelectric Estimating Unit, Martin Marino

Theses

The purpose of this study was to study the feasibility of quantitatively pre-setting the ink key distribution on an off-set press. Presently the pre-settings of the ink keys has been left to the pressmens' ability and experience. This, in many cases, involves much "trial and error" work along with lengthy makeready times. This study attempted to reduce makeready time by quantitatively pre-setting ink keys from data obtained from an estimating unit and use of a set of calibration curves. A photoelectric estimating unit was designed and constructed to read integrated densities of copy to be printed. There was one reading …

An Investigation Into The Emulsification And Determination Of Water In Lithographic Ink Emulsions, Thomas Saczawa Jun 1976

An Investigation Into The Emulsification And Determination Of Water In Lithographic Ink Emulsions, Thomas Saczawa

Theses

A study of the emulsification process of lithographic ink and water was conducted to investigate methods for determining the water content of lithographic ink and water emulsions. Experiments using infra-red spectroscopy and analysis of the hydroxyl and carbonyl absorption bands revealed several variables which must be considered when attempting to use infra-red spectroscopic methods for the determination of the water content of ink emulsions. These factors include the choice of pigment, (either transparent or opaque), the type of cell medium, and methods for dispersing added water into an ink. The initial problem encountered was a lack of reproducibility when attempting …

Studies Of The Properties Of Poly (Ethylene Oxide) As A Substitute For Gum Arabic In The Fountain Solution, Orapan Chongpipatanasook Jun 1976

Studies Of The Properties Of Poly (Ethylene Oxide) As A Substitute For Gum Arabic In The Fountain Solution, Orapan Chongpipatanasook

Theses

Poly (ethylene oxide) is a polymer of ethylene oxide. It is one of the classes of synthetic water soluble resins which are commercially available. The properties of poly (ethylene oxide) as a desensitizer in the fountain solution were studied. The solution of this resin was compared to gum arabic solution. The investigation included the study of the physical properties of the solutions at different concentrations as well as press performance. Comparisons were made as to wettability, viscosity, surface tension, the ability to clean the plate, the resistance to scum, printing sharpness, resolution, and the plate-press characteristic curve. The experiments were …

Image Intensification By A Low Level Light Exposure Before, During, And After An Image Exposure, Robert Rippstein Jun 1976

Image Intensification By A Low Level Light Exposure Before, During, And After An Image Exposure, Robert Rippstein

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to study the effects on the shape and position of the characteristic curve due to a low level uniform exposure to white light. This was accomplished using a special camera which produced an image of a neutral density -wedge on a film strip. One half of this image was covered while the other half was uniformly exposed to a low level light exposure. In some cases the low level exposure was first applied to half of the film strip with the image exposure occurring second. The density differences between the two halves of the …

Application Of The Finite Element Method To The Solution Of Maximum Fillet Stresses In Loaded Projections, Victor Biller

Theses

This thesis analyzes a geometric configuration under a loaded condition and establishes location and magnitude of the maximum fillet stress by the use of the Finite Element Method. Results are compared to Heywood's published study.
