Dual Enrollment: Measuring Factors For Rural High School Student Participation, Todd E. Johnson, Michael Brophy Nov 2006

Dual Enrollment: Measuring Factors For Rural High School Student Participation, Todd E. Johnson, Michael Brophy

The Rural Educator

The purpose of this study was to explore the reasons 162 rural area high school students participate in the dual enrollment program. Dual enrollment programs allow high school students to enroll in college courses for credit prior to high school graduation with local school districts covering the cost of tuition. Participants in this study were recruited from two rural agricultural counties from Washington State attending a local college. Exploratory factor analysis revealed that dual enrollment participation was related to academics, financial, social, and choice reasons. Results showed no significant differences between 11th and 12th grade participants regarding financial and choice …

Nclb Technology And A Rural School: A Case Study, Theresa A. Cullen, Thomas A. Brush, Timothy J. Frey, Rebecca S. Hinshaw, Scott J. Warren

The Rural Educator

The requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) have presented special challenges and opportunities for rural schools (Reeves, 2003). Researchers have suggested that one way rural schools may be able to overcome these challenges is through an increase in the level of technology integration in their school (Collins & Dewees, 2001). This case study reports on one school’s attempt to use grant resources funded through NCLB to integrate specific instructional technologies to facilitate increased student achievement. Through interviews and observations, the roles, attitudes, and difficulties of teachers and administrators in implementing a technology initiative in a …

Challenges And Changes Faced By Rural Superintendents, Marcia L. Lamkin Nov 2006

Challenges And Changes Faced By Rural Superintendents, Marcia L. Lamkin

The Rural Educator

This research study was designed to build grounded theory about the challenges faced by rural superintendents. Participating rural superintendents identified five areas that presented a challenge but that also applied to superintendents in other settings: school law, finance, personnel, government mandates, and district or board policies. Further, these superintendents identified challenges related specifically to the rural setting and to their lack of acculturation to the demands of rural school leadership. Focus group research conducted among rural superintendents in New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee indicated that the challenges of the rural superintendency were distinct enough to warrant some specialized preparation for …

Proteomic Identification Of In Vivo Substrates For Matrix Metalloproteinases 2 And 9 Reveals A Mechanism For Resolution Of Inflammation, Kendra J Greenlee, David B Corry, David A Engler, Risë K Matsunami, Philippe Tessier, Richard G Cook, Zena Werb, Farrah Kheradmand

Journal Articles

Clearance of allergic inflammatory cells from the lung through matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) is necessary to prevent lethal asphyxiation, but mechanistic insight into this essential homeostatic process is lacking. In this study, we have used a proteomics approach to determine how MMPs promote egression of lung inflammatory cells through the airway. MMP2- and MMP9-dependent cleavage of individual Th2 chemokines modulated their chemotactic activity; however, the net effect of complementing bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of allergen-challenged MMP2(-/-)/MMP9(-/-) mice with active MMP2 and MMP9 was to markedly enhance its overall chemotactic activity. In the bronchoalveolar fluid of MMP2(-/-)/MMP9(-/-) allergic mice, we identified several chemotactic …

New Zealand Marine Reserves: Bureaucratic Surplusage Or Community-Driven Conservation?, James Mize Nov 2006

New Zealand Marine Reserves: Bureaucratic Surplusage Or Community-Driven Conservation?, James Mize

James Mize

Management authorities increasingly view marine reserves - areas of the ocean environment where no extraction of marine life is allowed - as a valuable tool for protecting areas of high biodiversity and as a buffer against scientific uncertainty in managing marine ecosystems. Such measures, however, are not without controversy as communities reliant upon these resources often resist exclusion from their traditional grounds. Thus, efforts at implementing marine reserves as conservation tools have not met widespread acceptance. As a result, marine reserves are oft designated in areas away from the interest of commercial, recreational, or customary users. In some other locations, …

Negative Conductance Power Amplifier, Vladimir I. Prodanov Nov 2006

Negative Conductance Power Amplifier, Vladimir I. Prodanov

Electrical Engineering

Power amplifiers are disclosed that demonstrate improved linearity and efficiency in applications requiring significant peak-to-average ratios (PAR). A power amplifier in accordance with the present invention comprises a first transistor in an input stage that converts DC power into AC power; and a second transistor in a negative conductance stage that has a current-voltage characteristic with at least two slopes. The at least two slopes of the current-voltage characteristic are separated by a break point that may be controlled. The power amplifier may also include a non-dissipative two-port device that has two AC ports. The non-dissipative two-port device has a …
