Business As A Mission; Business As A Calling (Long Version), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Speaking at InterVarsity's Open for Business Conference in St. Louis, MO, Pollard describes vocation as fulfilling whatever call God has placed on our lives. By drawing upon his own story as a Christian businessman, he shows how such a fulfillment requires the implementation of servant leadership.

Collapse Assessment Of Degrading Mdof Structures Under Seismic Excitations, Mouchir Chenouda, Ashraf Salah Eldin Ayoub Dec 2006

Collapse Assessment Of Degrading Mdof Structures Under Seismic Excitations, Mouchir Chenouda, Ashraf Salah Eldin Ayoub

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Seismic code provisions are now adopting performance-Based methodologies, where structures are designed to satisfy multiple performance objectives. Most codes rely on approximate methods to predict the desired seismic demand parameters. Most of these methods are based on simple SDOF models, and do not take into account neither MDOF nor degradation effects, which are major factors influencing structural behavior under earthquake excitations. More importantly, most of these models can not predict collapse explicitly under severe seismic loads. This study presents a newly developed model that incorporates degradation effects into seismic analysis of MDOF structures. a new energy-Based approach is used to …

Design Of Concrete Railing Reinforced With Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bars, Fabio Matta, Antonio Nanni Dec 2006

Design Of Concrete Railing Reinforced With Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bars, Fabio Matta, Antonio Nanni

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforcement is a practical alternative to conventional steel rebars in concrete structures subjected to aggressive environments. the solution is attractive for bridge deck and rail applications, as it eliminates corrosion of the steel reinforcement, which is the major instrument of degradation. Due to the peculiar physical and mechanical characteristics of advanced composite materials, the design philosophy of FRP reinforced concrete (RC) structures differs from that of traditional RC. This paper introduces a systematic approach adopted for the structural and functional design of an open-post bridge railing reinforced with Glass FRP bars (GFRP) as …

Dynamic And Economic Design Of Rigid Retaining Wall, Y. Wu, Shamsher Prakash, V. K. Puri Dec 2006

Dynamic And Economic Design Of Rigid Retaining Wall, Y. Wu, Shamsher Prakash, V. K. Puri

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A 2-D model which accounts for the effect of coupled sliding and rocking motion and uses strain dependent soil stiffness and material damping for calculating the response of rigid retaining walls subjected to dynamic loads, was developed earlier. This model was used to study the effect inclination of the wall face in contact with the backfill, on its displacement under the effect of ground motions due to Northridge, ElCentro and Loma Prieta earthquakes. the effect of wall inclination on cumulative displacements is discussed and its role in achieving possible cost effectiveness in design of rigid retaining wall is highlighted. Remote Health Monitoring Of The First Smart Bridge In Florida, Ebrahim Mehrani, Ashraf Salah Eldin Ayoub Dec 2006

Remote Health Monitoring Of The First Smart Bridge In Florida, Ebrahim Mehrani, Ashraf Salah Eldin Ayoub

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Monitoring of civil engineering structures is a new area that has gained significant attention recently and became a topic of extreme national interest. This area is being driven by the need to develop efficient condition assessment procedures for structural performance in response to societal and economic needs. the main goal of monitoring is to detect accurately and efficiently structural damage either due to long-term deterioration processes or due to extreme events (e.g. earthquakes, blasts). with the emergence of new technologies, structures can now be monitored remotely from a central monitoring station located several miles away from the field. Sensors are …

International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management, Inc. (IIIRM)

The Institute brought together 25 indigenous and other storytellers, songwriters, poets, and dancers with historians and other representatives from a variety of tribal and disadvantaged communities in proximity to DOE legacy waste sites, along with policy makers from various public agencies with an interest in addressing environmental problems through the humanities. Roundtable participants were briefed on the types and hazards of persistent contamination from the DOE legacy sites, future hazards for human health and the environment, and the limitations of standard institutional controls. In facilitated discussions, roundtable participants set out the potential benefits of and strategies for encouraging creative/historical discourses …

Functional Disaster Resistant Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young Dec 2006

Functional Disaster Resistant Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, tornados, tsunami and earthquakes, are becoming a greater problem as they destroy lives, homes, businesses and the natural environment. Such disasters can happen with little or no warning, leaving hundreds or even thousands of people without medical services, potable water, sanitation, communications and electrical services for up to several weeks. One proactive strategy to minimize this type of destruction and disruption to lives is the implementation of disaster-resistant buildings that are energy efficient, fortified to the latest codes, and incorporate renewable energy systems. This approach uses the best energy-efficient buildings, fortified to the latest …

Problems And Solutions: Training Disaster Organizations On The Use Of Pv, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young Dec 2006

Problems And Solutions: Training Disaster Organizations On The Use Of Pv, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

In 1992, the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) assisted the University of Miami Field Epidemiology Survey Team (FEST) with photovoltaic systems to power temporary medical clinics after Hurricane Andrew struck south Dade County. At that time, it became apparent that there were no educational materials prepared for disaster relief or emergency management personnel on the use of photovoltaic (PV) to supply electrical power in response to a disaster. This need prompted FSEC to create an education program to develop awareness and train organizations on the proper use of PV in disasters. Since then, FSEC has …

An Investigation Of Thundersnow And Deep Snow Accumulations, Christina Crowe, Patrick Market, Brian Pettergrew, Chris Melick, Josef Podzimek Dec 2006

An Investigation Of Thundersnow And Deep Snow Accumulations, Christina Crowe, Patrick Market, Brian Pettergrew, Chris Melick, Josef Podzimek

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A comparison of 30 years of hourly surface weather observations (1960-1991) from first-order stations and 24-hour snowfall data from climate network stations over the upper Midwestern United States reveals an indirect association between the relatively rare occurrence of thundersnow (< 1 event yr-1 in this dataset) and the accumulation of significant 24-hour snowfall (> 15 cm) in 19 of 22 cases identified. Although no direct relationship is found between the location of thundersnow and the deepest 24-hour snow totals, significant snow accumulations frequently occurred in proximity (< 1° latitude) to thundersnow events. the presence of thundersnow tended to indicate a parent extratropical cyclone capable of producing significant snowfall totals; should thundersnow be anticipated, the operational meteorologist can have much greater confidence in forecasting deeper snow totals.
