Ultrasensitive Mass Sensing Using Mode Localization In Coupled Microcantilevers, Matthew Spletzer, Arvind Raman, Alexander Q. Wu, Xianfan Xu, R. Reifenberger

Birck and NCN Publications

We use Anderson or vibration localization in coupled microcantilevers as an extremely sensitive method to detect the added mass of a target analyte. We focus on the resonance frequencies and eigenstates of two nearly identical coupled gold-foil microcantilevers. Theoretical and experimental results indicate that the relative changes in the eigenstates due to the added mass can be orders of magnitude greater than the relative changes in resonance frequencies. Moreover this sensing paradigm possesses intrinsic common mode rejection characteristics thus providing an alternate way to achieve ultrasensitive mass detection under ambient conditions.

Perspective Greenhouse Gas Mitigation By Covers On Livestock Slurry Tanks And Lagoons?, Soren O. Petersen, Daniel N. Miller Jun 2006

Perspective Greenhouse Gas Mitigation By Covers On Livestock Slurry Tanks And Lagoons?, Soren O. Petersen, Daniel N. Miller

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Liquid manure (slurry) storage facilities are important point sources of atmospheric pollution. Being point sources, containment of gaseous emissions via improved storage conditions may be possible, and permeable surface covers (natural crusts and artificial covers) are increasingly recognized for their capacity to reduce various gaseous emissions. Microbial transformations in permeable surface covers include bacterial-methane oxidation, but this interface between nitrogen-rich slurry and the atmosphere is also an environment with intense nitrogen turnover that can lead to nitrous oxide emissions. Both methane and nitrous oxide are greenhouse gases, and strategies to reduce environmental impact of slurry stores must consider the total …

Parenting Practices In Emerging Adulthood: Development Of A New Measure, Melanie Easley Mckay Jun 2006

Parenting Practices In Emerging Adulthood: Development Of A New Measure, Melanie Easley Mckay

Theses and Dissertations

Given that more and more young people are living at home well into their twenties, and parents no longer see their children as adults until well into their mid to late twenties (Nelson, Walker, Carroll, Madsen, Barry, & Badger, 2006), parents may continue to "parent" for much longer than we have typically believed. Although parenting may still play an important role, little research has been done examining parenting in emerging adulthood, including its correlates and outcomes. As such, there is a need for a measure of parenting that is appropriate for use in emerging adulthood. The current study attempted to …

What Happens When A Fifth Grade Class Takes An Inquiry Stance Into Their Own Wellness Through A Critical Literacy Lens?, Casey Shalhoub Jun 2006

What Happens When A Fifth Grade Class Takes An Inquiry Stance Into Their Own Wellness Through A Critical Literacy Lens?, Casey Shalhoub

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to teach wellness to students in a fifth grade class using inquiry and critical literacy books. I taught lessons that incorporate the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for Health to find out how this knowledge affected the students' lives. I worked with twenty-four students in a fifth grade class for a sixteen week period during my student teaching. I used a student questionnaire to gather information and also analyzed the student participation during lessons and responses to what was taught. I found that through the teaching of wellness through inquiry and critical literacy …

Hiding In Plain Sight: Higher Education Pink And Blue Collar Staff Experiences As Returning Adult Learners, Workers, And Family Members, Susan J. Bracken, Jeanie K. Allen

Adult Education Research Conference

This study focuses upon a sometimes invisible subset of adult learners: higher education staff members. The participant interviews are part of a pilot study intended to create increased understanding of how these unique adult learners experience their environments. This paper focuses upon one central work/school theme, ‘knowing your place’.
