Macroeconomic And Financial Sector Comparison With Saarc And Asean Countries, Safdar Khan Dec 2003

Macroeconomic And Financial Sector Comparison With Saarc And Asean Countries, Safdar Khan

Safdar Khan

Extract:
Two distinct regional associations, SAARC and ASEAN, comprise over seventeen different economies of Asia. These economies differ from each other in terms of their age, size and economic performance. However, some comparisons can be drawn between these intra-regional economies on the basis of economic and financial performance for a uniform period of observation, spanning from 1990 to 2003.1 This chapter discusses the financial sector indicators of the SAARC and ASEAN countries under the framework of macroeconomic performance, with the objective of assessing the level of Pakistan’s performance in comparison with these countries.

Identification Of Micrornas And Other Tiny Noncoding Rnas By Cdna Cloning, Victor Ambros, Rosalind Lee Dec 2003

Identification Of Micrornas And Other Tiny Noncoding Rnas By Cdna Cloning, Victor Ambros, Rosalind Lee

Victor R. Ambros

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and other small RNAs can be identified by cloning and sequencing cDNAs prepared from the ∼22-nt fraction of total RNA. Methods are described for the construction of cDNA libraries from small noncoding RNAs through the use of T4 RNA ligase, reverse transcriptase, and polymerase chain reaction. cDNAs are cloned in λ or plasmid vectors, and the sequences are compared to annotated genomic sequence databases, and analyzed by RNA folding programs to distinguish miRNA sequences from other small RNAs of similar size. Northern blot hybridization is used to confirm the expression of small RNAs in vivo.

The Arrest And Vindication Of John H. Hickcox, Nancy Stimson, Wendy Nobunaga Dec 2003

The Arrest And Vindication Of John H. Hickcox, Nancy Stimson, Wendy Nobunaga

Nancy F Stimson

In January 1882, John H. Hickcox, a central government documents figure in his time, and the creator of United States Government Publications: A Monthly Catalogue or Hickcox's Monthly Catalogue was arrested in Washington, DC, for taking letters addressed to the Librarian of Congress. Although the charges were eventually dismissed, 1882 is the last year that Hickcox worked for the Library of Congress. In an effort to add to the history of the key players in government documents publishing, this paper explores this strange incident and also documents other details of Hickcox's life and his catalog, which were discovered during the …

Going To The Chapel: Same Sex Marriage And Competing Narratives Of Intimate Citizenship, Marcus O'Donnell Dec 2003

Going To The Chapel: Same Sex Marriage And Competing Narratives Of Intimate Citizenship, Marcus O'Donnell

Marcus O'Donnell

The public discourse about marriage oscillates between a story of the ideal and a story of the everyday. A range of symbolic references or myths are mobilised in media stories about marriage, this is particularly evident in the polarised debate around same-sex marriage. This article identifies and explores three of the myths that underlie the rhetoric in same-sex marriage stories: 1) the evolution/revolution myth; 2) the apocalypse myth and 3) the myth of the child. It also argues that the production of such stories has effects on the realm of ‘intimate citizenship’ (Plummer 1995) and that it is through this …

Police Culture, Ethics And Entitlement Theory, Kathleen Bailey, Suzanne Wolfe, Brian Kingshott Dec 2003

Police Culture, Ethics And Entitlement Theory, Kathleen Bailey, Suzanne Wolfe, Brian Kingshott

Kathleen Bailey

Using entitlement theory as a lens for viewing police relationships, this paper will explore the police culture and provide a theoretical foundation for understanding police behavior and their response to stress. Entitlement theory suggests that individuals may develop impairments in their ability to empathize and behave in a mutually respectful manner, given significant relationships in which they have been underentitled, and/or traumatic experiences that have not been appropriately processed. It is proposed that early attachment experiences, the ensuing view of self and others, the police training and work culture, and traumatic experiences in the line of duty all contribute to …

Dreams Of Perfect Programs: Managing The Acquisition Of Electronic Resources, Marie Kennedy

Marie R. Kennedy

For more than a decade, academic libraries have been wrestling with the thorny issue of managing the acquisition of electronic resources. Where are we in the continuum from paper lists to vendor-designed management systems? This paper takes a look at several in-house initiatives around the country, commenting on the successes and failures of the homegrown programs built to track, update and manage the acquisition and behind-the-scenes maintenance of electronic resources. Realizing that libraries are now well equipped to identify what dream programs should entail, this paper also comments on how we can prepare for the future of electronic resource management.
