Visual Inspection Time In Parkinson's Disease: Deficits In Early Stages Of Cognitive Processing, Andrew Johnson, Quincy Almeida, Con Stough, James Thompson, Rene Singarayer, Mandar Jog Dec 2003

Visual Inspection Time In Parkinson's Disease: Deficits In Early Stages Of Cognitive Processing, Andrew Johnson, Quincy Almeida, Con Stough, James Thompson, Rene Singarayer, Mandar Jog

Andrew M. Johnson

Inspection time (IT) is a simple information processing paradigm dependent on a participant's ability to identify physical properties of a stimulus presented for a specified time interval. In contrast with reaction time (RT) studies, the dependent variable of interest in IT is not related to the motoric speed with which the individual is able to respond, but rather the minimum presentation time necessary for participants to reliably identify physical properties of the stimulus. It is well documented that individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience significant impairment on tests of simple RT, but it is unclear whether such deficits can be …

Victoria N. Folse

Describes the use of clinical journaling as an integrated teaching methodology throughout the practicum component of a baccalaureate nursing program at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois. Japanese Painting And National Identity: Okakura Tenshin And His Circle, Victoria Weston Dec 2003

Japanese Painting And National Identity: Okakura Tenshin And His Circle, Victoria Weston

Victoria Weston

Japanese Painting and National Identity is the first monograph in English to address the art and philosophy of a group of Meiji painters regarded by many as seminal figures in the development of modern Japanese painting. Lead by the outspoken and widely published art critic Okakura Tenshin, this group, including artists Yokoyama Taikan, Shimomura Kanzan, Hishida Shunsô, and others, wrestled with the vexing problem of how to modernize traditional media, methods, and styles while keeping the results authentically Japanese. Yet they saw themselves not just as artists but as servants of the nation. Their task, they believed, was to give …

Tissue-Engineering Constructs, Using Photopolymerizable Hydrogels And Stereolithography.”, Busaina Dhariwala, Elaine Hunt, Thomas Boland Dec 2003

Tissue-Engineering Constructs, Using Photopolymerizable Hydrogels And Stereolithography.”, Busaina Dhariwala, Elaine Hunt, Thomas Boland

Thomas Boland

One of the most important aspects of tissue engineering is the design of the scaffold providing the mechanical strength and access to nutrients for the new tissue. For customized tissue engineering, it is essential to be able to fabricate three-dimensional scaffolds of various geometric shapes, in order to repair defects caused by accidents, surgery, or birth. Rapid prototyping or solid free-form fabrication (SFF) techniques hold great promise for designing three-dimensional customized scaffolds, yet traditional cell-seeding techniques may not provide enough cell mass for larger constructs. This article presents a novel attempt to fabricate three-dimensional scaffolds, using hydrogels combined with cell …

Learning Community: Popular Education And Homeless Women, Lorna Rivera Dec 2003

Learning Community: Popular Education And Homeless Women, Lorna Rivera

Lorna Rivera

In this essay, I present the voices of homeless women to illustrate the empowering impact of popular education on their lives. Popular education is a methodology of teaching and learning through dialogue that directly links curriculum content to people's lived experience and that inspires political action (Beder, 1996; Freire, 1985, 1990; Williams, 1996). On the basis of 5 years of ethnographic research in a shelter-based popular-education program, I describe how popular education approaches inspired a sense of community among a group of 50 homeless women of color. I also examine some of the barriers to literacy faced by women who …

Paper To Pdf: Making License Agreements Accessible Through The Opac, Marie Kennedy

Marie R. Kennedy

In search of a cohesive tool for managing license agreements, the University of Florida Libraries has devised an in-house project. This article tracks development of the project from its theoretical inception, which began in 1997. The project was intended to be an all-encompassing database that allowed tracking of license agreements from the time they were received in the Serials Acquisitions Unit to their final signature. The discussion follows the progress of the database development and details the current Portable Document Format (PDF) project in
place, which uses scanned license agreements linked to the OPAC (online public access catalog) title record …

Dead-End Jobs Or Stepping Stones? The Long-Run Consequences Of Early Industry And Occupation, Stacie Bosley Dec 2003

Dead-End Jobs Or Stepping Stones? The Long-Run Consequences Of Early Industry And Occupation, Stacie Bosley

Stacie Bosley

Dead-end jobs can be defined as a line of work in one’s early work history that leads to lower long-run wages. This study shows how early lines of work predict long-run worker wages and finds that there are significant differences in this relationship based on the skill level of the worker. In general, service-producing lines of work appear to penalize long-run wages, especially for low-skilled workers. Low-skilled workers in retail food/foodservice lines of work rank about in the middle of the spectrum between dead-end jobs and stepping stones. Long-run wage potential is better in retail food/foodservice than in manufacturing/operative jobs. …

Building Internet Trust: Signaling Through Trustmarks, Aiken Damon, Greg Osland, Ben Liu, Robert Mackoy Dec 2003

Building Internet Trust: Signaling Through Trustmarks, Aiken Damon, Greg Osland, Ben Liu, Robert Mackoy

Robert Mackoy

Consumers' concerns about privacy, security, and control of personal information highlight the importance of trust in building marketing relationships in the computer-mediated environment. Internet firms have begun posting third-party certifications, labelled “trustmarks”, as signals of reliability, credibility, and general trustworthiness. This paper integrates the literatures on signalling theory and trust, and makes extensions to the internet. It identifies and categorises sets of internet signals, highlighting the critical role of trustmarks in the computer-mediated environment. It develops a series of propositions related to the effectiveness of trustmarks, including variables such as source and culture. Lastly, it provides direction for future research.

Successful Branding Of A Commodity Product: The Case Of Raex Laser Steel., Daniel Mcquiston Dec 2003

Successful Branding Of A Commodity Product: The Case Of Raex Laser Steel., Daniel Mcquiston

Daniel H. McQuiston

In today's competitive business environment, industrial marketers must work harder than ever before to achieve some degree of differentiation for their products to avoid being viewed as a commodity. Many firms have sought to achieve this differentiation by branding their products. Branding, however, is more than simply putting the company's name on a product and broadcasting that name to its target audiences. For industrial products, branding is a multidimensional construct that includes not only how the customers view the physical product, but also the logistics, customer support, and corporate image and policy that accompany this product. This paper discusses how …
