All Theses

It was the purpose of this study (1) to discover the specific problems of beginning teachers as reported by their supervisors; (2) to seek to determine how the supervisor helps with these difficulties; (3) to attempt to find out if the beginning teacher seeks the aid of the supervisor in attempting to overcome these difficulties; and (4) to find out what quality supervisors feel that a beginning teacher should possess in order to be successful.

It was felt that the major purposes of this investigation could be realized if the answers to the following questions could be found: What are …

Geology Of The Southern Ladron Mountains, Socorro County, New Mexico, E.A. Noble Apr 1950

Geology Of The Southern Ladron Mountains, Socorro County, New Mexico, E.A. Noble

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Ladron Mountains are in a fault-block range consisting in large part of Pre-Cambrian rocks. They are flanked on the west by Paleozoic sediments and elsewhere by Tertiary and Quaternary deposits. The Pre-Cambrian rocks of the southern Ladron Mountains consist of a thick sequence of quartzite and schist which has been granitized by a sub-adjacent intrusion to such a degree that only remnants of unaltered quartzite and schist remain, the remainder of the rocks being largely paragneiss and para-granite. The nature of the intrusion is not known, but it is suggested that it may have been at least partly formed …

The Public Campaign Of The 1949 Virginia Democratic Gubernatorial Primary, William O. Hester Apr 1950

The Public Campaign Of The 1949 Virginia Democratic Gubernatorial Primary, William O. Hester

Master's Theses

That the South possesses a one-party system of choosing its state and national representatives is an axiom of Anericnn politics . On only three occasions since 1880 have Southern presidential electors cast their votes for any nominee other than that of the Democratic Party. On only four occasions in this period has a Governor of a Southern State been elected on any but a Democratic ticket. This record is convincing testimony that in the States of the late Confederacy the nominees of the Democratic Party are in reality the only candidates having any probability of election.

It would therefore behoove …

From Limbo To The World Of Light : An Examination Of The Novels Of Aldous Huxley, Walter A. Bass Apr 1950

From Limbo To The World Of Light : An Examination Of The Novels Of Aldous Huxley, Walter A. Bass

Master's Theses

The line between literature and philosophy is not sharply defined, and it is never quite certain where one leaves off end the other begins. It is possible to avoid the problem altogether, if it is a problem. The Critique of Pure Reason is convincing proof that literary considerations may be avoided entirely in philosophic writing. Poe championed the other extreme, but the isolation of literature has not often been successful, and on the whole, it is perhaps justifiable to claim that literature must be a criticism of life; that is, it must have philosophic content.

From the critical point of …

The Effect Of Ultraviolet Radiation On The Pattern Of Spore Germination In Funaria Hygrometrica Hedw., Mary Elizabeth Case Mar 1950

The Effect Of Ultraviolet Radiation On The Pattern Of Spore Germination In Funaria Hygrometrica Hedw., Mary Elizabeth Case

Masters Theses

Introduction: In 1782 Hedwig published a morphological description of spore germination in mosses in his Fundamentum historiae naturalis muscorum frondosorum. Since then others (Schoene, 1906; Brown, 1919; Van der Wijk, 1932; Chalaud, 1932) have described spore germination in Funaria hygrometrica Hedw., the Cord Moss, reporting four general types of germination. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of ultraviolet radiation on the spore germination pattern of F. hygrometrica. No previous work is known on the effect of ultraviolet radiation on germination of moss spores.

Prime Ideals In Semigroups, Helen Bradley Grimble Mar 1950

Prime Ideals In Semigroups, Helen Bradley Grimble

Masters Theses

The concept of prime ideal, which arises in the theory of rings as a generalization of the concept of prime number in the ring of integers, plays a highly important role in that theory, as might be expected from the central position occupied by the primes in arithmetic. In the present paper, the concept is defined for ideals in semigroups, the simplest of the algebraic systems of single composition, and some analogies and differences between the ring and semigroup theories are brought out. We make only occasional references to ring theory, however; a reader acquainted with that theory will …

The Influence Of Shakespeare Upon Wordsworth, Mary Weaver Sweet Mar 1950

The Influence Of Shakespeare Upon Wordsworth, Mary Weaver Sweet

Masters Theses

Many notable influences are apparent in the writings of William Wordsworth, as, indeed, in the works of many creative artists. Arnold, Grierson, De Selincourt, Legouis, Havens, and other Wordsworth scholars have written much concerning the influence of Milton upon Wordsworth. Certainly his poetry has many "Miltonic echoes" which testify to the "completeness with which he had absorbed his master." His early poems, "Descriptive Sketches" and "Evening Walk," bear "painful witness" to the influence of the minor eighteenth-century writers: Warton, Thomson, Gray, Collins, and others. Seventeenth-century and eighteenth-century philosophers influenced his thinking in his search for a metaphysical basis of his …

Induced Mutations In Molds, Frank M. Boyd Mar 1950

Induced Mutations In Molds, Frank M. Boyd

Masters Theses

(From the Summary)

This experiment was originally intended to investigate the mutagenic effect of certain carcinogenic drugs, and to determine the possible relationship between mutation in micro-organisms and cancer in higher tissue. Attempts to produce visible morphological mutations or modified lactose fermentation in Escherichia coli and Aerobacter aerogenes by placing the various drugs in the culture media did not yield any mutations. These same materials were then used on Aspergillus niger, by placing the chemical on absorbent discs on petri plates and examining the mold in the surrounding area for variations. This procedure also failed to yield mutations. …

A Study Of The Factors Influencing The Artificial Hatching Of The Eggs Of Macracanthorhynchus Hirudinaceus, Melvin A. Cassady Mar 1950

A Study Of The Factors Influencing The Artificial Hatching Of The Eggs Of Macracanthorhynchus Hirudinaceus, Melvin A. Cassady

Masters Theses

(Summary) A brief discussion of the phylum Acanthocephala is given in the introduction to this study.

Tests were conducted on the effects of the pH of the rewetting solution, temperature, and storage time on the artificial hatching of the eggs of Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus, the swine thorny-headed worm.

In order to test the effects of the pH of the rewetting solution, eggs which had been stored at room temperature for periods from one to 21 days were rewetted with solutions of various pH. For experiments on effects of temperature, an equal number of slide preparations were stored at …

A Study Of The Retail And Wholesale Distribution Of Frozen Foods In Tennessee, John F. Boyd Iii Mar 1950

A Study Of The Retail And Wholesale Distribution Of Frozen Foods In Tennessee, John F. Boyd Iii

Masters Theses

[From the Introduction]

One of the most amazing stories to come from the foods business during the past decade is the growth of the frozen foods industry. Its rapid development, after having partially solved many perplexing problems of production and distribution, was somewhat accelerated by higher consumer incomes and wartime scarcities. Equally important is the fact that housewives have been relatively quick to adopt frozen foods. Therefore, today frozen foods are occupying an increasingly important position and the industry no longer considers itself as being in the "infant" stage of development.
