Design And Development Of The Portable Build Platform And Heated Travel Envelope For The Multi3d Manufacturing System, Steven Daniel Ambriz
Design And Development Of The Portable Build Platform And Heated Travel Envelope For The Multi3d Manufacturing System, Steven Daniel Ambriz
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The final product functionality of parts produced by Additive Manufacturing (AM) can, in part, be improved by the inclusion of multi-material capabilities. The “Multi3D system” that is under development at The University of Texas at El Paso uses material extrusion printing (or fused deposition modeling), solid conductor wire embedding, direct-write, component placement, and micromaching to enable multi-material fabrication. The Multi3D was designed to transport a workpiece between manufacturing stations via a six-axis robot, portable build platform (PBP), and a controlled temperature environment or chamber that travels to each manufacturing station. The heated travel envelope (HTE) was included to mitigate thermal …

Engaging In Social Justice With Toddlers, Susan M. Nasiombe
Capstone Collection
This study was created as a way to highlight and begin filling a large void in academic information regarding the ways caregivers engage in social justice with the toddlers they care for. Through an online survey, participants were asked to explain their role and experience as caregivers, give their definition of social justice, share the social justice resources they use to help inform their engagement with toddlers, and list the limitations and barriers they face in achieving their goals in this area. Participants were also asked to assess their value of various elements commonly used to engage toddlers in social …

An Examination Of Intimate Partner Violence And Cigarette Smoking Among African American Women In 12 States, Eboneka Coleman
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Abstract
Introduction. African American female intimate partner victims (IVP) are more likely to abuse substances, suffer from depression and anxiety, and experience mental health issues, including PTSD, all of which are risk factors for smoking. The purpose of this study is to determine among African American women who have ever experienced IPV the prevalence of smoking and whether it is influenced by education and income.
Methods. Data for this study comes from the 2005 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state-based Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). This primary study population was African American females who answered IPV-related questions …

Months after the city agreed to make half of its taxi fleet accessible to people in wheelchairs, 219 West takes a look at the issue of subway accessibility, which has changed little since 1984. One disability-rights advocate takes us through the system, running into several obstacles. Others tell us why they think it is both immoral — and illegal.

Ain't No Love In New York City, Jason Bisnoff
Ain't No Love In New York City, Jason Bisnoff

My story is about the defunct relationship between hip-hop and the city where it was born, New York. While cities like Nashville and New Orleans tout their love for the musical forms that were born in their cities from top to bottom, the people of New York love the music and culture that calls the city home but the powers that be on a gubernatorial and municipal level keep it at an arms length. In this piece I explore why and how this disconnect exists through street sign legislation, a battleground area where petitions to co-name streets after rappers have …

2-D Or Not 2-D?: How The Iris Closed On Hand-Drawn Feature Animation, Thad Komorowski
Capstones
Before the age of computer animation, hand-drawn animation flourished in American feature films. Yet the early successes of CGI in mid-'90s had a profound negative impact on the livelihood of this once Hollywood cornerstone. Through extensive research and eyewitness accounts, learn the story of why pencils were replaced with pixels at all the major feature animation studios. And more importantly, why that isn't likely to change. The audio element is an 8-minute recording of historian, professor and filmmaker John Canemaker discussing his personal feelings on hand-drawn and CGI animation. Iggy Azalea: Cultural Appropriator Or Scapegoat For Accepted Practice?, Malorie Marshall
Capstones
Iggy Azalea isn’t the first artist to profit from a entertainment persona that differs from her “real” personality. But the fact that Azalea is a white woman profiting by employing a fake “black” sound wrought through appropriating is what seems to angers people more than the quality of Azalea’s music, or anything else about her.

The Mormon church spends millions on focus group, lobby groups, surveys, public relations, and marketing, all to fix a single problem: When Americans are asked what they think of Mormons, fewer than 50% give a positive answer. This is the story of God-vertising, of what happens when the traditions of religion meet the proselyting tools of the modern world.

Well-Born: Black Women And The Infertility Crisis No One Is Talking About, Kaara Baptiste

Black women are twice as likely to experience infertility than white women, but are less likely to seek treatment or to have successful fertility results once treated. Despite this alarming number, this topic is not often discussed, even among the black community. My narrative piece t tells the story of a black woman confronting her infertility diagnosis and the role her race played in her fertility treatment, while exploring the role racism and sexuality have had in keeping this issue in the shadows.

The Bitter Pill: How Second-Wave Feminism Failed, And Why It Doesn't Matter, Brianna Mcgurran

It's not cool to be a feminist. It’s not anti-establishment to say you don’t identify with that label; now, it’s the status quo. Every time a celebrity like Katy Perry or Salma Hayek distances herself from feminism, blogs like Jezebel and Feministing pounce. But a few months ago I found out that all the back-and-forth doesn’t matter. The final verdict on second-wave feminism's success won’t be found in words spoken on the red carpet or in rejoinders on women’s blogs. The future of gender relations will be decided in an obscure corner of the Internet populated primarily by angry white …

I have always admired journalists reporting from war zones. They seemed so courageous and utterly infallible. When James Foley and Steven Sotloff were beheaded by ISIS fighters earlier this year, I started to think about how journalists confront the trauma they witness and feel. Surely, the horrors of seeing colleagues die as well as witnessing the pain of civilians would have some effect on these professionals. I began speaking with journalists of all ages and from all walks of life to see how they dealt with their emotions after reporting from conflict zones.

There are more than 220 venues in Manhattan where people can listen to live jazz, including clubs, restaurants and bars, but also music schools and concert halls. Yet it is hard for a musician to find a steady gig, let alone one that pays well. When it comes to finding places to play gigs, competition is fierce. Gabriel Guerrero, 37, and Marianne Solivan,38, also share their experience.

Riot - The End Of Violent Protests In New York, Rikki Reyna

In New York City, following the death of Eric Garner, protests and rallies against police brutality were sustained for months. For the most part it was peaceful. But what happened to Eric Garner would have incited a very different response in New York City in a different time. There was a time when New Yorkers wouldn’t just protest. They would riot. Those riots seem incapable of happening in today’s New York. This narrative project explores the reasons why. What social, political and economic changes have come together to make riots in this city seem improbable.

This misappropriation includes offenses such as wearing a headdress as a fashion statement, using a Native American based mascot and dressing up like a Native American for Halloween. Pawns And Paranoia: Baltic-American Anxiety Over Russian Aggression, Leila Roos

Existential anxiety runs deep for Baltic-Americans. It began with the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian refugees from the Soviet Union who strove to preserve their nations in exile. Post-independence, anxiety over Russian aggression may seem like leftover Cold War paranoia. For many members of the stateside émigré communities, however, fear of Russian expansionism is instead a sober assessment of reality. Looking at what they see as President Putin’s undeclared and unimpeded invasion of Ukraine, they worry that EU and NATO membership may not be enough to ensure the safety of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This article examines Baltic-American anxiety over Russian …
