Sculptors Of The Realm: Classic Maya Artists' Signatures And Sculptural Style During The Reign Of The Piedras Negras Ruler 7, John Ellis Montgomery

Art & Art History ETDs

The discovery of hieroglyphic artists' signatures on monuments of the Classic Maya represents a turning point for the study of Precolumbian art. As key elements in the retrieval of artists from long-standing conditions of anonymity, artists' signatures theoretically afford the scholar an opportunity to follow the careers and sculptural repertoire of individual artists, allowing recognition of the artist's style over time and on unsigned monuments. However. while various studies have tried to identify individual sculptors solely on the basis of style, to date no project working in the medium of stone monuments has explored the relationship between signatures and style, …

The Relationship Between The Classification Of Dementia And Social Policy And Consequent Delivery Of Services, Brigitte Pennington Dec 1995

The Relationship Between The Classification Of Dementia And Social Policy And Consequent Delivery Of Services, Brigitte Pennington

Theses & Honors Papers

The American population is getting older, and with the aging of the population the prevalence of chronic illnesses will increase. Current social policies that are intended to assist elderly persons and their families in case of illness are no longer sufficient to meet that need, and will decline further as the number of older persons increases. This is especially true for patients who have developed dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, because dementias are still considered that "peculiar disease of the cerebral cortex" described by Alois Alzheimer in 1907 that seems not to fit any current classification. This study was designed to …

Minimization Of Sum-Of-Conditional-Decoders Structures With Applications In Finite Machine Epld Design And Machine Learning, Sanof Mohamedsadakathulla

Dissertations and Theses

In order to achieve superior speed in sequencer designs over competing PLD devices, Cypress brought to market an innovative architecture, CY7C361. This architecture introduced a new kind of universal logic gate, the CONDITION DECODER (CDEC). Because there are only 32 macrocells in the chip, saving only one CDEC gate can be quite important (the well-known "fit/no-fit problem"). A problem that is related to the fitting problem of the Cypress CY7C361 chip is the SOC Minimization. Due to the limited low number of macrocells in CY7C361, a high quality logic minimization to reduce the number of macrocells is very important. The …

A Study Comparing Musical Abilities Of Stutterers And Nonstutterers, Megan Creswell Dec 1995

A Study Comparing Musical Abilities Of Stutterers And Nonstutterers, Megan Creswell

Dissertations and Theses

Rhythm is a feature of both music and speech that has been successfully used in the treatment of speech disorders, particularly stuttering, for many years. The successful use of rhythm in the treatment of dysf luencies of speech may be due to stutterers' perceptual deficiencies in music and rhythm abilities. Research supports the view that there are differences between stutterers and nonstutterers in timing and rhythmic capabilities. This study, therefore, sought to determine whether there was a difference between the perceptual musical abilities of stutterers versus nonstutterers as measured by the Seashore Measures of Musical Talents, Revised (1960). Data collected …

Perceptions Of Regular Education And Special Education Professionals Regarding Involvement In The Iep Process, Donna B. Howland

Theses & Honors Papers

Special education and regular education professionals in public high schools in Virginia were surveyed regarding their perceptions of student, parent, special and regular educator involvement in the IEP conference. The survey aimed to compare the teachers' perceptions on the ideal level of involvement with what actually occurs in the schools. Students and regular education teachers had lower levels of actual involvement in the IEP conference than the teachers believed it should be. Furthermore, both groups of teachers indicated that the primary responsibility for developing the IEP should fall to the special education professional.

Cognitive Differentiation And Verbal Ability: A Test Of Two Judgmental Models, Kristine K. Siedis Dec 1995

Cognitive Differentiation And Verbal Ability: A Test Of Two Judgmental Models, Kristine K. Siedis

Student Work

Differences in judgmental models between highly differentiated individuals and poorly differentiated individuals were investigated. Level of cognitive differentiation was determined by participants’ responses to a Repertory Grid technique. Based upon previous research, it was predicted that highly differentiated individuals would engage in judgmental processes that reflected a nonadditive model, while poorly differentiated individuals would engage in more additive judgmental processes. While it was shown that highly differentiated individuals did engage in nonadditive judgmental processes and poorly differentiated individuals did engage in additive judgmental processes, the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. The findings are discussed in context …

We Want What Is Rightfully Ours: An Examination Of Selected Legal Issues In The Modern History Of The Omaha Tribe Of Nebraska 1945-1995, Mark R. Scherer Dec 1995

We Want What Is Rightfully Ours: An Examination Of Selected Legal Issues In The Modern History Of The Omaha Tribe Of Nebraska 1945-1995, Mark R. Scherer

Student Work

The ebb and flow of federal Indian policy over the last two centuries is a well-studied phenomenon. Less prevalent, however, arc examinations of the localized impact of changing policies on specific tribes and reservations. The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska offers a particularly useful model for this type of "grass roots" analysis. Virtually all of the federal programs tested on the Omahas in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were dismal failures, leaving the tribe impoverished and virtually landless as it entered the post-World War II era. Over the last fifty years, the Omaha Reservation has continued to serve as an …

"Where Life Is Simple And Passions Moderate": A History Of Nebraska City, Nebraska, 1900-1910, Thomas L. Boeche Dec 1995

"Where Life Is Simple And Passions Moderate": A History Of Nebraska City, Nebraska, 1900-1910, Thomas L. Boeche

Student Work

Nebraska City vied with Omaha for leadership in early Nebraska, but by the first decade of the twentieth century was struggling to hold its own. Unlike earlier periods in its history, scant attention has been devoted to turn-of-the-century Nebraska City. To effectively document the decade 1900-1910, one must deal with a variety of historical, economic, and social issues. Perhaps the most important point to consider is the shift in population from 7,380 in 1900, to only 5,488 in 1910. After weathering the Depression of the 1890s, this small town underwent drastic economic changes during the first decade of the twentieth …

Perception Of Perceived Source Credibility As A Function Of Physical Attractiveness In Print Advertisements, Susan Louise Bury Dec 1995

Perception Of Perceived Source Credibility As A Function Of Physical Attractiveness In Print Advertisements, Susan Louise Bury

Student Work

This thesis investigated perceptions of physical attractiveness and source credibility along the five dimensions of competence, character, composure, competence and sociability. The McCroskey and McCain Interpersonal Attraction Scale (1972) was used to determine levels of physical attractiveness in the advertisements used for the study. The McCroskey, Jensen and Valencia Source Credibility Scale (1973) was also used. Results indicated no significance between the perceived physical attractiveness or perceived physical unattractiveness of the sources and credibility except along one dimension of character. Those sources perceived as physically unattractive were perceived as having more character than those perceived physically attractive. Discussion, interpretation of …

Law And Gospel In Luther's Antinomian Disputations, With Special Reference To Faith's Use Of The Law, Jeffrey Silcock Dec 1995

Law And Gospel In Luther's Antinomian Disputations, With Special Reference To Faith's Use Of The Law, Jeffrey Silcock

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Three major antinomian controversies took place in Wittenberg in the sixteenth century, one during Luther's lifetime and two after his death. The first controversy, which is the subject of our study, had its beginnings in 1527 in an argument between Johann Agricola and Philipp Melanchthon. The occasion for this was the visitation of the churches in electoral Saxony and the major issue was the role of the law in repentance. The main phase of the first controversy however was the dispute between Agricola and Luther between 1537 and 1540. The issue was basically the same. The second and third antinomian …

Brazilian Elements In Villa-Lobos's "Assobio A Jato", Nancy J. Ebel Dec 1995

Brazilian Elements In Villa-Lobos's "Assobio A Jato", Nancy J. Ebel

Student Work

Heitor Villa-Lobos was particularly lauded for creating a unique Brazilian style of art music. He imbued in his works a flavor of the many facets and cultures of Brazilian life, from the jungles of the Amazon to the street musicians of Rio de Janeiro. One of his late works, a piece entitled Assobio a Jato (The Jet Whistle), demonstrates this Brazilian flavor, even though the composition was written later in Villa-Lobos's life when the Brazilian element was not so obvious as in his earlier works. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief background about Villa-Lobos and an …

An Investigation Of Nebraska Art Teachers' Perceptions And Usage Of Internet Technology., Donalyn M. Heise Dec 1995

An Investigation Of Nebraska Art Teachers' Perceptions And Usage Of Internet Technology., Donalyn M. Heise

Student Work

In order to prepare students to be life long learners in a rapidly changing global and technological society, educators need to promote the use of appropriate technology to support quality learning. Art students, as well as all of today's students, need to be effective communicators, creative problem solvers, and be able to access and manage information in an electronic world. Although Nebraska is already a national leader in telecommunications and telecomputing, the extent to which technology is used and will be used in specific disciplines is as yet unclear. An important first step in supporting the future use of Internet …

The Relationship Of Coping Behaviors, Resurrection Beliefs And Hopelessness Scores Among Bereaved Spouses Of Hospice Patients, Michael E. Atkinson Dec 1995

The Relationship Of Coping Behaviors, Resurrection Beliefs And Hopelessness Scores Among Bereaved Spouses Of Hospice Patients, Michael E. Atkinson

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Hope is essential to effectively face the trials of life. One of life's most stressful trials is coping with the death of a loved one. Understanding coping differences may promote counseling interventions to benefit individuals who feel hopeless. The Beck Hopelessness Scale (Beck, 1974) and the Ways Of Coping Questionnaire-Revised (WOCQ-R) (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988), were used in a survey of 97 bereaved spouses of hospice patients to answer four questions: (a) Does a relationship exist between coping behaviors and levels of hopelessness? (b) Is there a relationship between resurrection beliefs and hopelessness? (c) Are differences in resurrection beliefs related …

An Examination Of Railroad Capacity And Its Implications For Rail-Highway Intermodal Transportation, David Bruce Clarke Dec 1995

An Examination Of Railroad Capacity And Its Implications For Rail-Highway Intermodal Transportation, David Bruce Clarke

Doctoral Dissertations

After many years of decline in market share, railroads are now experiencing an increasing demand for their services. Service intensive intermodal transportation seems to be an especially promising market area. Since the historic decline in traffic has been accompanied by a reduction in network infrastructure, however, the railroads' ability to handle sizable traffic increases, at least in the short term, is in question. Since rail transportation is critical to the domestic economy of the nation, and is increasingly important in international logistics channels, shortfalls in railroad capacity are not desirable.

The published literature on railroad capacity is relatively sparse, especially …
