Influence Of Exercise Environment On Stress And Affect In Sedentary Adults: A Comparison Of Indoor And Natural Environments, Rachel M. Snider Jan 2018

Influence Of Exercise Environment On Stress And Affect In Sedentary Adults: A Comparison Of Indoor And Natural Environments, Rachel M. Snider

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

The national need for increased physical activity, especially among sedentary populations, has been well documented. The need now is for fitness programs to be more effective at encouraging individuals to adopt and maintain a physically active lifestyle. This study investigated the relationship between exercise environment, stress, affect, and Nature Relatedness. Because stress reduction has been seen as a benefit of being exposed to nature, stress and affect were assessed in sedentary adults at the beginning and end of short walks in an outdoor and indoor environment in an effort to determine which environment had the greater ability to reduce stress. …

Ergonomic Lacrosse Stick Design And Its Effect On Faceoff Mechanics, Christopher K. Seighman Jan 2018

Ergonomic Lacrosse Stick Design And Its Effect On Faceoff Mechanics, Christopher K. Seighman

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

Lacrosse is one of the only sports that provides an equal opportunity for possession after a stoppage of play. Subsequently, winning a faceoff is a key component of success for the sport. As faceoff specialization increases in the sport of men’s lacrosse, players are looking for any advantage they can gain, often modifying elements of their sticks to best suit the faceoff procedure. This study looked at the implications of modifying the geometry of the shaft to increase the torque generated during the faceoff, using the most common faceoff clamping technique. The study found that three of the four geometric …

The Effect Of A Trehalose Diet On Cold Tolerance In Aphaenogaster Picea, Julia Clare Cline Jan 2018

The Effect Of A Trehalose Diet On Cold Tolerance In Aphaenogaster Picea, Julia Clare Cline

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

Ants living in thermally variable environments need to be able to tolerate both high and low temperature extremes. One way that insects handle cold is through the accumulation of cryoprotectants, such as sugars, that increase cold tolerance by lowering the freezing point of liquids in the hemolymph. The disaccharide sugar molecule trehalose is an important cryoprotectant in many insect species, but its role has not yet been studied in ants. I investigated whether the northern forest ant Aphaenogaster picea resists cold by producing trehalose from sugars in their diet. To understand whether dietary trehalose or its monosaccharide, glucose, increases cold …

Spectacular Tropes: Representations Of The Roman Arena, Tiger Maurice Britt Jan 2018

Spectacular Tropes: Representations Of The Roman Arena, Tiger Maurice Britt

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

This paper will focus on the construction of representational tropes depicting the ancient Roman arenas and those involved with them, particularly within the spectacles of gladiatorial battles. The conceptions of representation within the arena influenced how differing Roman social groups perceived one another through social ideals and identities. I will analyze this by looking at three major methods of representation from the ancient Roman world: (1) literary sources, (2) epigraphical materials (inscriptions and graffiti), and (3) visual sources (mosaics and reliefs). These sources reflect the different characteristics of the Roman arenas and are defined by various social contexts, displaying how …

Facilitated Self-Assembly Of Hydrazone-Based Molecular Cages And Their Binding Properties, Natavan Dudkina Jan 2018

Facilitated Self-Assembly Of Hydrazone-Based Molecular Cages And Their Binding Properties, Natavan Dudkina

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

The field of supramolecular chemistry has enabled organic chemists to construct molecules of higher order complexity based on both covalent and noncovalent interactions. Receiving inspiration from biochemical systems, supramolecular chemistry has also been termed “chemistry beyond the molecule” because of its dominant use of interactions beyond the covalent bond, such as H-bonding, crystal packing, π–π stacking, metal coordination, halogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions, and the like[1]. Some examples of the chemical structures that became possible to synthesize by employing supramolecular strategies are macrocycles (e.g. cyclodextrins, crown ethers, calixarenes), mechanically interlocked molecular architectures (e.g. rotaxanes), molecular cages (e.g. metal–organic polyhedral), …

The Intervening Role Of Urgency On The Association Between Childhood Maltreatment, Ptsd, And Substance-Related Problems, Rebecca Darya Mirhashem Jan 2018

The Intervening Role Of Urgency On The Association Between Childhood Maltreatment, Ptsd, And Substance-Related Problems, Rebecca Darya Mirhashem

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

A range of risk factors lead to opioid use and substance related problems (SRP) including childhood maltreatment, elevated impulsivity, and psychopathology. These constructs are highly interrelated such that childhood maltreatment is associated with elevated impulsivity and trauma-related psychopathology such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and impulsivity—particularly urgency—and PTSD are related. Prior work has examined the association between these constructs and SRP largely independently and it is unclear how these multi-faceted constructs (i.e., maltreatment types and positive and negative urgency) are associated with one another and SRP. The current study used structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the relations among childhood …

Microbiome Composition Of Pisaster Ochraceous Sea Stars Affected By Sea Star Wasting Disease, Becky Nesnevich Jan 2018

Microbiome Composition Of Pisaster Ochraceous Sea Stars Affected By Sea Star Wasting Disease, Becky Nesnevich

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

The largest epidemic of sea star wasting disease is affecting over 20 different species of sea stars in the west coast of the United States. The etiology of sea star wasting disease is currently unknown. Given the important role an organism’s bacterial community plays in health and disease, we sought to compare the composition of the microbiome of sick and healthy Pisaster ochraceous sea stars. Because tissue types often differ in their microbiomes, we also compared body wall, tube feet, ampullae, stomach, pyloric caeca, gonad, and cross section tissues. To do this, we used 16s amplicon sequencing to classify the …

Characteristics Of Individuals Who Participate In Autoerotic Asphyxiation Practices: An Exploratory Study, Lauren Chapple

Theses and Dissertations

The set of behaviors known as Autoerotic Asphyxiation (AeA) have been studied, by contemporary scientific standards, for the better part of sixty years. Within that time, an inadequate amount of research has been completed on a far too narrow sample of the population, namely those who have died from the practice. AeA as a practice has been understudied to this point despite statistics that would note the potential for an unknown number of individuals to currently be practicing these behaviors. There is a paucity of both quantitative and qualitative data about living AeA practitioners. The present study uses Sex Positivity …

Self-Compassion, Social Connectedness, And Interpersonal Competence, Jacob H. Bloch Jan 2018

Self-Compassion, Social Connectedness, And Interpersonal Competence, Jacob H. Bloch

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Self-compassion has consistently been found to be related to well-being (Barnard & Curry 2011). Most research has focused on the intrapersonal benefits of self-compassion, such as its positive relationships with happiness, optimism, positive affect (Neff & Vonk, 2009), and life satisfaction (Neff, Kirkpatrick, & Rude, 2007). In contrast, little research has addressed how engaging in self-compassion may be beneficial to one’s relationships. There is strong evidence that social connectedness (e.g. Lee, Draper, & Lee, 2001; Lee & Robbins, 1998; Mauss et al., 2011; Neff, 2003b) and interpersonal competence (e.g Fiori, Antonucci, & Cortina, 2006; Berkman & Syme, 1979; Delongis, Folkman, …

Photochemical Cycling Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Hydrothermal Systems: Impacts On Biosignature Preservation, Megan A. Mave

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Life originated on early Earth, despite harsh, highly reducing conditions. Life may have also emerged on early Mars, when conditions on the two planets were similar (i.e. before atmosphere loss and desiccation). NASA’s 2020 Mars rover mission aims to identify biosignatures (i.e. evidence of life) in early Martian deposits. Potential exploration sites include extinct hydrothermal springs, due to their high habitability and preservation potential. This study aims to better understand biosignature preservation in hydrothermal systems analogous to those on early Mars (i.e. reducing and Fe-rich).

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly reactive molecules formed primarily by photochemical reactions. ROS are …
