National newspapers are also found having more interactive Web sites …

Efficient Convolvers Using The Polynomial Residue Number System Technique, Surendar Paruchuri Jan 2002

Efficient Convolvers Using The Polynomial Residue Number System Technique, Surendar Paruchuri

LSU Master's Theses

The problem of computing linear convolution is a very important one because with linear convolution we can mechanize digital filtering. The linear convolution of two N-point sequences can be computed by the cyclic convolution of the following 2N-point sequences. The original sequence padded with N zero’s each. The cyclic convolution of two N-point sequences requires multiplications and additions for its computation. A very efficient way of computing cyclic convolution of two sequences is by using the Polynomial Residue Number System (PRNS) technique. Using this technique the cyclic convolution of two N-point sequences can be computed using only N multiplications instead …

Prediction Of Heat Transfer & Flow In Rotating Two-Pass Channels Connected By Holes., Achintya Kumar Pramanick Jan 2002

Prediction Of Heat Transfer & Flow In Rotating Two-Pass Channels Connected By Holes., Achintya Kumar Pramanick

LSU Master's Theses

A computational study of the effect of rotation on the velocity and thermal field for a two-pass channel connected by rows of holes on the divider wall has been conducted. Detailed velocity and Nusselt number distributions are presented inside the rotating two-pass coolant channel. The enhanced cooling in this passage design is achieved by a combination of impingement and crossflow-induced swirl. The cross flow is generated from one coolant passage to the adjoining coolant passage through a series holes placed along the dividing wall. The holes deliver the flow from one passage to another typically achieved in a conventional design …

The Radiation-Induced Degradation Of Poly(Diene Sulfones) As X-Ray Resists, Gina Marie Calderon Jan 2002

The Radiation-Induced Degradation Of Poly(Diene Sulfones) As X-Ray Resists, Gina Marie Calderon

LSU Master's Theses

The microlithographic process, essential in the fabrication of silicon chip integrated circuits, uses high-energy radiation to transfer a pattern onto a thin film of polymer resist. Pattern transfer occurs by modifying the properties (solubility or volatility) of the polymer film exposed to radiation. Poly(olefin sulfones) exhibit a high sensitivity to x-rays, which is a desirable property for polymer resists, but typically undergo a glass transition around room temperature and a thermal degradation at moderate temperatures. The thermal properties of the poly(olefin sulfones) reduce the processing latitude for industrial microelectronics applications. Poly(unsaturated olefin sulfones) containing a carbon-carbon double bond in the …

The Influence Of Imagined Interactions On Verbal Fluency, Charles Choi Jan 2002

The Influence Of Imagined Interactions On Verbal Fluency, Charles Choi

LSU Master's Theses

Imagined interactions (IIs) are a type of social cognition and mental imagery whereby actors imagine an interaction with others for the purposes of planning. Within actual encounters, verbal fluency is a characteristic that contributes to the speaker's credibility. The planning that takes place through imagined dialogues can help a speaker overcome disfluency found in speech. This study shows that improvements in speaking style are also dependent upon the trait of communication apprehension that an individual experiences. Visualization can decrease apprehension levels, thus producing higher verbal fluency. Results from this study indicate planning's influence in the reduction of silent pauses but …

LSU Master's Theses

Due to its high market value, Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) has long been regarded as a promising species for aquaculture. Although pompano exhibit several favorable traits for culture, previous studies have indicated that fish larger than 200 g exhibit poor growth. This study was conducted to determine the effects of different feeding strategies on production characteristics of pompano raised in closed recirculating systems. Results of Experiment 1 indicated that mean weight of fish (initial mean weight, 17 g) fed a fixed ration at two and six feedings per day was greater than that of fish fed only once per day. …

Transformation Of Paradise: Geographical Perspectives On Tourism Development On A Small Carribbean Island (Utila, Honduras), Frances Heyward Currin Jan 2002

Transformation Of Paradise: Geographical Perspectives On Tourism Development On A Small Carribbean Island (Utila, Honduras), Frances Heyward Currin

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis addresses the recent development of tourism on Utila, the westernmost island of the Bay Islands of Caribbean, Honduras. Especially during the 1990s, international tourists, mostly Europeans and North Americans, were attracted to the island because it was a relatively inexpensive place to dive on a beautiful fringing reef and to enjoy other benefits of a tropical beach community. Larger nearby islands, Roatán and Guanaja, had developed something of a tourism industry earlier. A review of the economic and culture history of Utila reveals that modern islanders -- English-speaking Anglo- and Afro-Caribbeans originally from the Cayman Islands were preadapted …

Nutrient Reserves Of Lesser Scaup During Spring Migration In The Mississippi Flyway: A Test Of The Spring Condition Hypothesis, Michael J. Anteau Jan 2002

Nutrient Reserves Of Lesser Scaup During Spring Migration In The Mississippi Flyway: A Test Of The Spring Condition Hypothesis, Michael J. Anteau

LSU Master's Theses

The continental scaup population (lesser [Aythya affinis] and greater scaup [A. marila] combined) has declined markedly during the past 20 years, and has remained below the population goal of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan since 1985. One hypothesis explaining the scaup population decline states that reproductive success has decreased because females presently are arriving on breeding areas in poorer condition than that historically (Spring Condition Hypothesis [SCH]). I tested the SCH by comparing fresh body masses (FBMs) and nutrient reserves (lipid, protein, and mineral) of lesser scaup at 4 locations (Louisiana, Illinois, Minnesota, and Manitoba) in the Mississippi Flyway …

Impacts Of Vertebrate Herbivores And Hurricane Georges On Densities Of Belowground Plant Material On Shallow Mudflats In The Active Mississippi River Delta, Scotland Talley

LSU Master's Theses

Delta National Wildlife Refuge (DNWR) is located in the active Mississippi River Delta (MRD). Resource managers at DNWR are implementing a marsh creation program that consists of dredging crevasses (openings) in the natural or man-made levees of major distributaries to divert sediment rich waters in to open bays. The mudflats thus created are colonized by stands of delta duck-potato (Sagittaria platyphylla) and delta three-square (Schoenoplectus deltarum). These plant communities stabilize the mudflats and provide high quality habitat for wintering waterfowl and nutria. Two challenges for the maintenance of these plant communities is disturbance from tropical storms and intense winter grazing. …

The Strategic Bombing Campaign Against Germany During World War Ii, Julius Rigole Jan 2002

The Strategic Bombing Campaign Against Germany During World War Ii, Julius Rigole

LSU Master's Theses

Early attempts at strategic bombing led theorist to reason that it could offer a revolutionary new means of winning wars. Airpower visionaries such as Guilio Douhet, Hugh Trenchard, and Billy Mitchell advocated a Sherman - like strategy of attrition in which air strikes on the enemy’s vital economic centers would destroy his war – making capability and crush his will to resist. In the inner – war period the Air Corps Tactical School, occupied with formulating a strategic air doctrine, refined that idea, which was the central concept underlying AWPD-1, the basic statement governing strategic bombing elaborated by the Air …

LSU Master's Theses

The Baton Rouge fault is one of two faults (the other being Denham Spring-Scotlandville fault) that traverse the city of Baton Rouge and has long been thought to be active. Structural damages to buildings, streets and sidewalks near the fault have previously been attributed to movement of the fault. Although the presence of the fault has been known for nearly 60 years, previous investigations have failed to determine its rate of movement. This study was aimed at determining the rate of modern movement along the Baton Rouge fault. Using a precise geodetic leveling technique, the current elevations of NGS (National …

Development Of A Magnetite Tracer Protocol For Seasonal Measurement Of Bed Sediment Biodiffusion Coefficients, Paul D. Libbers Jan 2002

Development Of A Magnetite Tracer Protocol For Seasonal Measurement Of Bed Sediment Biodiffusion Coefficients, Paul D. Libbers

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis describes the development of a particle tracer technique for making short-term, in situ measurements of aquatic bed sediment biodiffusion coefficients. The bioturbation process in the upper sediment layers of streams, lakes, estuaries, and the marine environment moves particles and porewater. When present, organic chemicals, metals, colloids, etc., are transported across these layers and exchanges may occur at the sediment-water interface. Fickian biodiffusion coefficients that characterize such particle movements, Db (cm2/yr), are used for assessing chemical diagenesis rates and contaminant fluxes and are specific to each site. Chemical Fate and Transport (CFaT) models, developed for tracking contaminants in aquatic …
